If you're like me and use Safari’s profile feature to separate your work, personal, or hobby browsing, you’ve probably had this happen:
You start browsing in the wrong profile by accident, open a few tabs... then a few more... and suddenly realize you've got a whole window full of work tabs sitting in your hobby profile (or vice versa).
Unfortunately, Safari doesn’t have a built-in "Move Tab to Another Profile" option — but there’s a workaround, and it’s surprisingly smooth once you know how it works.
Why This Is Useful
Safari profiles are a great way to keep things organized — different extensions, favorites, history, cookies, etc. But if you misplace a tab (or a whole window’s worth), your organization system goes out the window. This method lets you move your tabs back where they belong without having to copy/paste URLs or start from scratch.
Step-by-Step: Move Tabs Between Profiles
Select the tabs you want to move:
- Hold down Command (⌘) and click to select individual tabs.
- Or use Shift + Click to select a full range.
Click the Profile name in the Safari toolbar (top left).
Select “New Tab Group with [X] Selected Tabs” (or just “New Tab Group with [X] Tabs” if nothing is selected — it’ll group the entire window).
Safari will create a new tab group and open the Sidebar.
- The new group will be named Untitled (you can rename it now or later).
In the sidebar, hover over the new tab group, click the three-dot icon, and choose: → “Move to Profile…”, then select the profile you want.
Switch to the destination profile:
- Either use the Profile button (if you’re on the Start Page), or
- Go to File > New Window > [Profile Name].
Open the Sidebar if it’s not already showing, and click on your tab group name to open all tabs in the window.
Pro tip: In the Sidebar, if you click the little arrow next to the tab group name instead of the name itself, you’ll see a list of the tabs in the group instead of automatically opening them. From there, you can right-click individual tabs in the list and move them to other tab groups inside the same profile.
Hope this helps someone! Maybe one day Apple sneak in an official one-click way to do this — but for now, this totally works.
Happy browsing!
