Cunversatzione What is the best car to rent?

I’ll be going to Sardinia for 10 days this weekend, and we’ll arrive in Olbia, drive straight to Cagliari to stay, then Tortoli, then Olbia again. During the days we’ll drive to nearby beaches and sites. What’s the best car to rent for this kind of plan with lots of driving? Is it better to go big or small or in between? There seems to be a lot of Fiats on the rental sites, would it be safe to drive these long distances in one?

Any advice would help hugely appreciated! 🙏

I recommend a car that is a little tall, not an off-road one because you have to travel many kilometers and it would be very heavy, but a car that doesn't risk having problems at the first little road with some stones. If you're happy with a small car, the Panda 4x4 is perfect.

VW Taigo or Peugeot … streets are narrow in towns

Can vouch for the VW Taigo, was a great choice

I was very happy with a Mini SUV - Seat Altea (?), Fiat 500x etc. Roads are narrow and some roads are bad, so that’s a good compromise. Maybe you want to explore bit, so something small with a bit of clearance on the bottom is good.

Just came back last night from sardinia. I was driving a Tesla model y performance and that was not a good choice. If you want to see little more of the calm beautiful beaches little bit outside the bigger villages I recommend a Jeep Renegade. Saw lots of them the last weeks on sardinia. High clearance is key due to the big holes and stones on the roads.

We rented Jeep Avenger which is the best in between size car. We originally booked Fiat Panda but it was unavailable during our pick up so we ended up renting the jeep and it was the best decision ever

Whatever you do, don’t rent a fiat 500x! They all have the same problem (start/stop error) with a check engine light. I got one in Olbia and the car broke down in Cagliari.

Never going to rent a fiat anymore in the future

Don’t get a Renault c3 , they have the worst headlights at night…..I’m a fan of the fiat panda to be honest, unfortunately it screams tourist especially if you get a white one🤣

We did this exact route almost and we rented a Nissan Juke. It was comfortable, had lots of power and was good on gas. Great on the highway.

If price isn't too important OK mobility have a Ford Kuga with unlimited Kms, full to full fuel policy and fully comp insurance for €341 for 7 days. This was on the DoyouItaly platform. A Fiat panda is about half the price but so is the ground clearance and comfort. Just don't use Goldcar under any circumstances.

Not a fiat 500 with automatic transmission if you are in any way expecting a 2% gradient along the way!

How come? Does it struggle uphill?

Oh youbetcha you would be quicker cutting a hole in the floor and approaching a hill flintstone style!
