What if it was that he has overstayed his Schengen tourist visa? I am almost certain that is the case, with him having a view to applying for asylum in the Netherlands once the visa had expired.
If he overstayed, he would be detained and would be deported to country of origin. If he had asylum request from the Netherlands, he wouldn't be allowed to travel until it is approved.
He hasn't filed an asylum application, apparently he was advised to do that once his visa expired. He was apparently aware of the implications of moving around the Schengen zone on his potential application too, but he decided to risk it.
So in that case, what are some of the circumstances that might have led to him being turned away at the German border and returned to Poland?

They didn't deport him, they denied him entry to Germany.
