Also /r/NotEvenWrong, as that's from an FBI list of "active shooter incidents", which...even after reading the summary of that report, I have no idea what it is even supposed to be.
Different organizations have different ways of counting "mass shootings", but everybody agrees it's hundreds of incidents a year. Wikipedia has a list of 568 mass shooting incidents in 2024
It's more than one a day, on average. 50 to 100 dead, every month, month after month.
Gunshots are the leading cause of death among children in the USA.

Yeah, I came here to say the FBI must have a narrow definition of "mass shootings." No way are there only 24 in a year.

I went on a bit of a Google dive on this, and it seems like "active shooter incidents" are defined by the FBI as a person (or people) indiscriminately shooting at people in a populated area. So, it doesn't count targeted killings (even if bystanders get shot), or arguments that escalate to gunfire, or road rage incidents, or...
Basically, only some psycho stalking the halls of a business or school and shooting anyone they can reach qualifies.

I've been shown statistics by us gun nuts where they define a "mass shooting" as four dead or more. My go-to retort is the assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan would not count. Four people got shot, but nobody died, so it doesn't count.
Don't worry that press secretary James Brady never walked again, and Reagan needed some emergency surgery, just another Monday in America that's not worth noting at all.

So a mass shooting almost every other week is acceptable? What a calloused disregard for humanity.

Eh, I don’t think it’s fair to assume they meant it was acceptable. If the prior year had eg. 1000 mass shootings then “only 24” wouldn’t be as outrageous of a thing to say. It’s a poor word choice for sure considering we’re talking about mass shootings but I still think you’re strawmanning a little bit.

There has been more than 500 mass shootings in US in 2024. OOP mistakes the FBI statistics for active shooter incidents.

If you ever wondered if the FBI had your best interests at heart, 24 is approximately 3 or 4% of the number of active shooter incidents.
Even the FBI spins their reports. Not that anyone would be surprised.
