It is a coping mechanism to make sense of why so many people outside hate the US, because if they acknowledge the flaws and mistakes of the country they would have to break with the propaganda narrative they have grown up with that they're the best country in the world.

"Why do all these other people hate us? It can't be our shit politics and domestic policies, or the fact we have spent the last two hundred years invading and toppling governments. No, it must be because they're jealous of how free and well off we are!"
