"Say what you will about America but there's a cultural understanding that mobs are bad. Even when they happen in the US, everyone in the mob knows they're being bad, not just normal. That mentality is not really as ingrained in people's heads most everywhere else in the world."

For Context: WWE is currently in Paris for 'Clash in Paris' and a few wrestlers have been mobbed by fans trying to get photos. In this instance is was Sheamus. (As an person that likes wrestling, please don't do this)

And this person is suggesting this kind of behavior is considered ok in France and also everywhere that is not USA? lol

How is that a mob though? It may be because I'm not a native speaker, but I've been under the impression that a mob, by definition, is supposed to be a gathering of people with ill intent. Fans swarming their idol may be sometimes stupid, leading to unfortunate events, but I don't feel they have any ill intent.

Depends on which variety of English you speak. In American English it's bad, in many other varieties of English it's a neutral collective noun.

In Australian English 'mob' is the correct collective noun to use for kangaroos and sheep as well as being used for people.

Kangaroos and sheep have no bad intent!

I would argue that sheep have baa'd intent.

I'll get me coat.

It doesn’t need to have ill intent. It can be a disorderly crowd.

I saw the video footage of the incident; it appears the security personnel messed up horribly. There were three guys, but they were too gentle with the fans.

There are other videos of celebrities being pushed and grabbed by crazy fans in France, Spain, and Italy. It's always a security failure.

In America, they prefer lynching, be it in white pointy hats or riot gear.

Pointy hats and hoods that were copied from the Spanish Easter Repentants.

Hilarious as Trump pardoned the worst mobs of all time - the violent January 6th election deniers.

He's right. In the US they love moral grandstanding. Then they don't do anything about anything. Case in point; gun violence.

Ah, come on now, they do lots of thinking and praying about gun violence, that's hard work for them.

Does the Klu Klan Klax know that?

Lucky they have all those guns to protect their liberty from tyrants who put might put soldier on the streets to oppress them…

Is that so?

Then why is it that it's Yankees who invariably paint the mafia as some sort of quaint Italian trait or resort to trite stereotypes taken from the Godfather?

Well, for a start it's the inability to form an independent thought. Other national identities consume a number of news resources and formulate their own opinions. Americans might consume one, based on their economic status and political bias, mix it with whatever shit has just been released from Hollywood and go with that. This is where the "we're number one" bullshit came from.

Unfortunately, it is starting to happen in Australia too, as evidenced by the fascist inspired marches against immigration lately.

So what he's saying, I think, is that in the US, mobs are made up of Good Americans, doing one bad thing totally out of character and feeling just terrible about it later.

Mobs in Europe, however, are basically zombies who are out to kill, stab, riot, and eat cheese that doesn't bounce.

u/Medium_Trade8371 Australian 4d ago

That might be what he is saying, but it is still bullshit.

Their own president leads a mob family.

In the US it’s not a mob, it’s just a sparking cult.

WTF does this even mean?

If mobs are bad and everyone in the mob knows they are bad, they should probably do away with the 2nd amendment, it is just asking for mobs.

I think I can agree with the American on that one: America has ingrained in its population the idea that life is every man for himself so hard that every man thinks he needs a gun to defend himself from every other man. It crushed all forms of union. Whereas in other cultures, people still somewhat understand that mob justice is the only justice that remains when legal justice is eliminated.

This also means mobs can form for unjust situations too, but I'm going to let that ride for now cos we're going to need the just mobs pretty soon.
