This Tuesday marked V-J Day. 80 years ago, Japan formally surrendered to the United States, ending World War II, the deadliest and most impactful conflict in human history.

World War II was a very interesting period in the history of popular culture, with some of the greatest artists of the 20th century rising to stardom or at the height of their popularity, from Frank Sinatra to Duke Ellington. It’s a period of music so under appreciated but worth highlighting.

Like with my Great Depression era playlist, I did my fair share of research in making this. I looked up the weekly top 10 Billboard pop and what would become the RnB charts from 1940 to 1945, “V-Disc” recordings (songs recorded specifically for troops stationed overseas), songs that were popular in other nations like Britain and France, as well as a handful of historic radio broadcasts for added effect. Hope you enjoy!

In terms of vibe it’s a very unique selection of songs with insane beats and a chill ug rap sort of vibe mainly. The production is what stands out for me with songs like these.

In terms of artists it’s mainly fakemink, feng, llondon actress, ghostinnafurcoat.

I have been listening to the same songs for some time and keep getting bored of them so I’d rather scroll instead which I do not want to. The genres I listen to are american rap, chill rap and r&b.

Rules and Guidelines:

When it comes to Pop try to avoid the most mainstream songs, unless you think it's somethings that's really worth checking out. Would love to hear songs and artists like: Miike Snow or Paramore (Told you so & Hard Times)

When it comes to Rock and indie rock, there's pretty much no bounds other than please try avoiding 'sad and slow" songs. And try to go for more "upbeat" and hard hitting ones. Would love to hear songs and artists like: Two Door Cinema Club, Foals , Circa Waves or Battle Tapes.

So for context I made a cute lil chrome extension that lets you speed up and slow down music. So to accompany it I wanted to curate a playlist specifically for sped up (or nightcore) effects.

I gravitated towards a lot of tiktok songs, early 2010s bops, and the like but I'm not sure if there's a whole genre im skipping on the virtue of never having heard it sped up.
