Visiting Squamish for the first time

Hi all! My husband and I are very excited to be visiting Canada for our first time this mid-September! We will be spending two full days in Squamish. We are planning to have one day be our "outdoor adventure" day, and one day just leisurely enjoying the town. For our outdoor day, we are thinking about doing the Sea to Sky Gondola and trails. Do you think this is worth it? We want to do something that shows us the beautiful scenery, and we think hiking The Chief is way too hard for us. We would appreciate any input! And also if you have any recommendations for our leisure day to get a glimpse of the beautiful town and the awesome locals. Thank you šŸ¤—

Pickleball - Eaglewind

Noticed the pickleball courts around Eaglewind neighbourhood don’t have any nets. Does anyone know if there is a reason/know where I can find more information? Would love to play there as it’s closer for me than Brennan Park!

Squamish parkrun

We're now on our 6th parkrun and are getting close to 60 participants each week - we'd love to hit 100! We're gaining a reputation from our tourists as most picturesque parkrun.

If you'd like to walk, jog or run 5k on a Saturday morning with a great group of folks then come along and join us - it's a great community event, and it's free! We're pup friendly (high quality treats and water are available). We're always on the lookout for volunteers too!

We meet at Cloudburst for coffee and chats after.

See some pictures from our recent events here:

We'd love to see you there!

Feather Park Beach on a hot day?

Is Feather Park Beach any good during these hot summer days? I’ve only been down there on windy, cold days. Can’t be bothered to bring a car full of kids down there if it indeed it is just as awful on hot summer days.

Brief shaking downtown

Wondering if anyone living in downtown has noticed this? Started up maybe in the last month or so… feels like a mini earth quake. 2-3 times a day typically in the morning. Can see my desk/bed/ shake for 3-5 seconds. Doubt it’s the train since I’ve been here for some time and didn’t feel it before. My partner noticed it too, independently from me.

Possibly the LNG drilling? Anyone know?

Edit: thanks for the replies everybody!

Meshtastic or Meshcore in the Sea to Sky

Howdy, Fellow geek based in Squamish and playing with LORA technology for decentralized off grid communications.

A few of us are thinking of putting a solar powered repeater node on a mountain or two to give coverage up and down the valley and beyond.

But there is a fork in the road: Meshtastic vs Meshcore.

Anyone using either? Interested in getting involved?

This is mostly a proof of concept for fun, but could be useful for getting comms in narrow valleys where walkie talkies can’t for SAR and other use cases.

SquamishConnect.ca - A NEW way to Connect in Squamish.

Hiiyaaa!
I created a platform to gather WhatsApp Groups to help people connect with each other. It’s more real-time than FB groups, more dynamic, and fosters real connections. If you run a group, feel free to add it!

šŸ‘‰ Check it out: squamishconnect.ca

The Story:
My name’s Thierry and I’ve been a Squamish resident for about 5 years. I love this place and call it home, but I’ve often struggled to make new, long-lasting friends in town. I have my crew, but with everyone hustling, it can be tricky to find people who are free to do the things I love (hiking, MTB, DJing, etc.).

I’m an extrovert with flexible hours who loves to connect, and to help others connect. So I decided to create something I’d personally find useful: a place where it’s easy to find people to do stuff with.

The Goal:
To bring people together in new and fun ways, and help fight the isolation that’s way too common these days.

Have a look and let me know your thoughts! šŸ’¬

See ya!

90's Video Arcade Downtown

Does anyone remember the name of the video arcade that was located downtown Squamish during the early to mid 90's? (It might have popped up during the late 80's, but I think it opened during the 90's). I know they had Mortal Kombat which was released in 1992.

It was in the same building that's attached to the The Spot laundromat and Baltech Electronics on second Avenue. The current space it used to occupy is showing a "For Lease" sign via Google Maps, but I'm not sure if this is up to date.

Solar power garden lights in Squamish?

Does anyone here use solar power stake lights for their garden areas during the fall and winter months? If so, which ones and how long does the light stay on for at night?

I've been thinking about buying some but ChatGPT/Gemini/DeekSeek etc., were telling me that the panels likely wouldn't charge sufficiently during the fall and winter months. I'd be lucky to get 2-3 hours of power. I believe that to be inaccurate. I'd think that 4-6 hours would be more likely, but I've never used them before so I wouldn't know.

I realize battery capacity and quality of components plays a large factor. I was thinking about getting some green or purple solar powered lights for Halloween.

Easiest MTB trails you can shuttle?

Want to introduce my young son to mountain biking. He’s done pump tracks, the sea wall, some skills park and BMX track type stuff… but not any proper mountain biking trails yet. Thinking that shuttling is probably the best first intro as I bet he’ll start hating it if there’s much climbing. First impressions matter.

Thinking Squamish is probably my best bet for this (we live in Vancouver). Wondering if you guys have any recommendations for me on this. I think Jack’s might actually do the trick starting at Alice Lake I think it’s mostly a gentle downhill from there, which would be perfect. I’ve never done wonderland but I assume that would be a good option? And what’s the story with the Ray Peters area across the 99? On the map it looks like a decent option but no idea what that’s like over there.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
