Discussion Hi, everyone. Chris, formerly from the Stadia community team, here to check in.

Hey, friends! Long time no see. Chris here. I served on the Stadia community team from 2019-2022. I can verify with a mod (Hi Vivi) if needed. I'm not a representative of Google or Alphabet. I'm here entirely on my own as a private individual.

I felt compelled to check in with you all and see how everyone's doing. Times are... challenging out there, to say the least, and I wanted to let you all know I still think about the wonderful times spent with this community on a daily basis. I gush about how much I looked forward to every day of work (even the, uh, uniquely difficult ones) with friends, colleagues, and basically anyone who will listen. My work on the Stadia community was the brightest spot in my career, and although I'm not the best community manager to ever live, I felt a strong connection to you all that I fear I'll never be able to recapture with any other venture.

Please feel free to use this thread to ask questions, share updates about your lives (any new Dadias or Momias out there?), vent about the price of new games, or reminisce about your favorite Stadia-era memories. Anything goes within reason. Obviously I can't reveal proprietary info -- I am not looking for a visit from any lawyers.

I'll proactively answer a question I expect to get: am I still close with Grace? Hell yes. Grace is one of my most treasured friends! We still hang out, and for that I'm immeasurably grateful.

Discussion How much has the death of Stadia affected cloud gaming?

Using Boosteroid right now, but it got me wondering a bit when I talked to a couple of my friends. When I told them i use cloud gaming, they were skeptical because they thought it died a long time ago. They seemed surprised to hear cloud gaming is so alive because they thought it died with Stadia. Was Stadia such a huge flop that it caused so much misinformation about cloud gaming? P.S. of course it's Google, if there's anyone that knows how to completely destroy an entire concept along with a project it's them.

Discussion The PS Portal got me thinking… what if Google had done this first?

Remember Stadia? Yeah, the one everyone clowned but secretly had insane streaming quality.

Now imagine this: • A dedicated Stadia handheld in 2019. • Slim design, 1080p / 60hz screen. • Boot it up → “Stadia” + “Google Games Pass” side by side. • Play anywhere with solid Wi-Fi. • Sub $150 price tag.

Tell me that wouldn’t have been a game changer.

Stadia had the tech. They just never gave us the device. Instead, we’re all holding a PS Portal wishing Google had seen it through.

Man… Google really fumbled the bag.

Positive Note Getting Back Into Cloud Gaming After Stadia's Demise.

I just picked up Madden NFL 26 EA app version and I am having a blast. Before going to work this morning, I played that game on my Chromebook with my Stadia controller and that controller was vibrating which gives me the feeling that Stadia is still around in some ways. I imagine some of you are enjoying FC 25 or 26 on Luna...we call that soccer here in the States LOL.

I hope EA Sports continues to support Luna or other cloud gaming platforms going forward so I won't need to sell an arm or leg for a Playstation 6 when it comes out.

Stadia might be gone but is not forgotten.

I know I didn’t get most of my money back from all the games I bought banks but honestly, I can’t even be mad at Google for one thing their controller, his hands down my fa. I use it every single day on GeForce now wired into my MacBook it just feels right and nothing else comes close and then the Chromecast ultra this little device is a gem. I still connected to my quest three and it blows me away every time People don’t realize how rare this thing really is no extra junk no bloat just pure hardware designed that nails everything to the fact that it can even predict frames on the fly that’s ahead of time. If you don’t believe me it just hurts a bit you know because these devices were just products to me. They were the ones that actually worked the ones that felt like the future in my hands.

Feature Suggestion Exploring the Chromecast Ultra: Specs & Research Discussion

Hey everyone,

I’m curious about the Chromecast Ultra and want to open a discussion for enthusiasts, modders, or developers who want to explore its hardware and software environment. I’m not asking for exploits or illegal instructions—just a comprehensive breakdown of what the device can do and how it works. Here’s what I’ve gathered so far:

Hardware Specs • Processor: Quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU (up to ~1.8 GHz) • GPU: Mali 450 MP4 • RAM: 1 GB • Storage: 4 GB flash memory • Connectivity: 802.11ac Wi-Fi (2.4 & 5 GHz), optional Ethernet via power adapter • HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 • Supports 4K HDR (HDR10, Dolby Vision) at 60 fps • Power: 5V/1.8A (USB-C with Ethernet option)

Software Environment • OS: Custom Chromecast OS (Linux-based) • Supports casting apps via Google Cast SDK • Video decoding: VP9 Profiles 0 & 2, HEVC/H.265 Main & Main10 • Frame prediction / low-latency support (for Stadia) • Firmware updates handled via Google servers

Features of Interest • Minimal OS bloat, very lightweight • Magnetic HDMI design for easy mounting • Game Mode auto-activation for low latency • Guest Mode for network-free casting • High-performance 4K HDR streaming with low latency

Discussion Goals • Explore the architecture and design for research purposes • Understand how it handles streaming, frame prediction, and low-latency modes • Compare its hardware and OS to other streaming dongles • Brainstorm safe ways to extend functionality via apps or network tweaks

If you’re experienced with Linux-based embedded devices or Chromecast development, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the hardware, OS, and what’s possible! I’ve literally seen more love than the Vita jail break community! I would assume a lot of the people here are high-tech assets in the industry who can yield social networks to turn these tech dongles until something impactful.

Question How are your controllers doing?

I've got three or four and they still hold a decent charge. Probably get about 4-5 hours of solid gameplay on GFN playing DBD mostly and Baldur's Gate 3.

Tech Support Stadia controller bricked?

My Stadia controller was working fine in Bluetooth mode for a while, then suddenly stopped connecting.

Bluetooth: Shows up briefly when in pairing mode then disappears before pairing.

USB: Connects for 1 second, then immediately disconnects. Tried different cables and ports.

Controller stays solid white, or flashing yellow in pairing mode.

Tried capture + assistant button, but nothing happens.

Discussion Saw this on a Spanish site — what do you think about cloud gaming in 2025?

I came across this article on a Spanish gaming site talking about Cloud gaming

It’s 2025 and cloud gaming has been around for a while now, but it still feels like it hasn’t fully taken off. We’ve seen mixed results with services like Stadia (RIP), GeForce Now, xCloud, etc. Nintendo has dabbled in it with some cloud versions on Switch, but nothing major.

Do you think we’ll see Nintendo actually embrace cloud gaming in a bigger way? Maybe for Switch 2? Or is it still too early / not worth it for them?

Really curious to hear your thoughts.

Discussion How Stadia Helped Make Cyberpunk on Switch 2 Possible

“We had worked on [Google] Stadia before, and we had a lot of console ports. So with all those different permutations of hardware, it was not too difficult to find a sweet spot for this platform.”

“It’s funny, because when we started the project, I was like, ‘Oh my god! We did Stadia! It can help!’ Quite a few things we resolved on Stadia actually helped us to move forward.”

Discussion How to pair stadia controller to Switch 2?

Confirmed that the Stadia Controller is Bluetooth updated https://stadia.google.com/controller/index_en_GB.html

I bought the latest 8bitDo V2

Updated the firmware automatically by plugging into PC. As of 28 July 2025. it's on Version 1.10

Now, I'm confused as to the next steps. Under BT Controllers in https://support.8bitdo.com/ Is the Stadia Controller Ultimate BT Controller ?

How do I get the Stadia Controller to work on the Switch 2?

Much help needed, many thanks in advance

Tech Support Replacement battery - where to find

Hi,

I have a Stadia controller which I want to switch to the bluetooth mode, but seems like the battery is dead. It doesn't charge anymore.

So I want to replace it and found the Ifixit guide, but I can't seem to find place to buy the replacement battery.

Anyone who can help me out? Im based in Europe.

Thanks!

Discussion CMV: stadia was doomed to fail

looking at the facts surrounding the platform, I just don't see a way Stadia could've succeeded and especially not a way for it to take down one of the big three.

1: cloud gaming was a very new technology at the time and even still is, sure, Google had unlimited money and technology to throw at it, but they're still working with something most people don't understand and still don't understand how to perfectly do for everyone involved.

2: it had a self-sustaining negative feedback loop, developers didn't want to put their games on it because nobody was using it, nobody was using it because it had no games, repeat.

3: even by the end of its lifespan, it didn't really have many games, less than 300 and only five exclusives, even the wii u had around 800, the N64 had 388, and those are both systems known for content droughts, and only five exclusive games, none of which were really platform sellers.

4: the fact that you had to re-buy all of your games was always going to be a problem for experienced gamers, I have over $5000 worth of games and DLC on my Xbox alone, it's just not worth it for me as a consumer to re-buy all of them.

5: (and the biggest problem IMO), I just don't see who the audience was.

If you're a casual gamer, you likely don't wanna buy a bunch of expensive games and a Bluetooth controller and worry about your Internet and all that stuff, you're going to stick to the simple systems.

if you're a parent without much free time, Again, why would you spend that much money and when would you actually have the downtime where you're also close to Internet to enjoy the games?

if you're a hard-core gamer, you likely want to buy a hard-core PC or a brand new console with a big TV and show it all off, you don't care about the ability to connect anywhere.

The only real market I can see is somebody who is just getting into gaming, Who also travels a bunch, has access to good Internet and also wants to play the big games.

6:The only real selling point it had was the ability to play anywhere, but is that really worth it?, are you really that desperate to play wherever you go?, Enough to invest into a whole new platform?

7: they claimed it had all this power and great visuals, but a lot of gamers clearly couldn't see that power, or at least not enough for it to make a sizable difference, and that's not mentioning the fact that the new consoles were coming out soon that would be way more powerful than the old ones.

Overall, I just don't see a realistic way stadia could've become mainstream or a household name.

Discussion Seems Xbox is looking to move Xcloud into its own tier and chances are they'll follow the GeForce now model - Also they're updating their Streaming capabilities... Does that interest people here? Seems closest thing to "Stadia" if true.

Discussion AI was the reason

Post image

As I previously said, the rise of OpenAI and other AI models was the primary reason for Stadia shutting down — not low revenue or user numbers.
