Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread

So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).

A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.

As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.

With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...

So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

Movies Conclusion Bias: because "Star Wars is Different"

A debate between Kasdan and Lucas, where Kasdan, while developing the "Return of the Jedi," suggested Luke should die, or if not Luke, one of the main characters should die.

Lucas disagreed: "You don't go around killing people."

General Discussion You’ll probably hate me for this idea but…

I just had a thought that might be a little out there but it might be interesting for some: what if, if an extremely powerful Force user had the in-depth knowledge of a starship and its inner workings, an entire ship could be constructed using the Force by taking material from the world around you and putting it together, be it junk from a crashed ship or even metal minerals in the ground? Again it may be too difficult for many reasons but if it was ever done on screen what would you think of it

General Discussion About Galactic Marines

Post image
306 Upvotes

In every source material, the clone galactic marines are depicted with armor that resembles that of the snow troopers from the Empire, and we see that as the norm. But isn’t it possible that they actually wear ordinary armor and the only reason we picture them like that is because we only saw them depicted in the Battle of Mygeeto? Without the Clone Wars series, etc, I bet we would’ve had a similar image of the 41st mostly wearing camouflage at all times as well. Just a food for thought that I had…

How the hell do people think the empire was right? They are some of the most comically evil antagonists in all of popular fiction, but for some reason Star Wars fans think they’re actually the good guys

Movies Those Powerful Emotional Moments in the Original Trilogy

Just watched the “Icons Unearthed: Star Wars Documentary Series from 2022.” I had no idea how instrumental Marcia Lucas was to the Original Trilogy, not only in the incredible editing work she did, but with the narrative ideas she came up with which injected the much needed powerful emotional moments into the films - ideas that were always connected and aligned with George’s conception of the Force.

I love the design of some of those snow troopers. It's possible that's just them without mask coverings though

Games Anyone else miss Clone Commando Delta 38 Boss? 😔

Playing this makes me want another republic commando game (with a third person option if possible) and it pains me to know that many years ago that imperial commando the planned sequel was canceled before the first game was released ☹️

Regardless clone commandos will always have a special place in my heart especially since the original game came out on my birthday month.

Costumes Today I learned: about the AN / PRR-9

Post image

The battery powered PRR-9 helmet mounted receiver was used in conjunction with the PRT-4 handheld transmitter as a ‘walkie-talkie’ type radio.

After successful testing, sets were first sent to Vietnam in March 1967. However, the sets performed poorly in the field compared to the PRC-25 and were consequently relegated to base security use.

Games Are inquistors actually trainned well, or are they trained just enough to come off as intimidating?

Upvotes

In most media (Games, TV Shows and a like) that comes to my mind the inquistors although definatley not weak aren't shown to be that strong. For example Cal Kestis while still effectivley a padawan (and rusty at that) did manage to beat an inqusitor in Jedi: Fallen Order (Ninth Sister if i recall)

I'm aware they didn't die as they come back in Survivour

But it did get me wondering, were inquistors actually trainned well or were they more meant as a intimidation force/tactic with enough trainning to give the *impression* of skilled combatants?

Or is this more a display of how well tranned the pre order 66 jedi were due to clone wars.

I mean Ashoka takes one down in less than a minute whilst she was unarmed for 98% of that fight

General Discussion Looking away from the Rebellion, (New) Republic or Galactic Empire, was there any other galaxy-changing factions at play after the Republic Era ended?

Post image
8 Upvotes

As a Star Wars fan who loved the Media adaptations (yes, Even the Sequel, sorry folks) but hasn't read the Legends or comics of Star Wars, I'm genuinely curious... Palpatine told the galaxy's biggest lie that the jedi were evil, and that they needed a new power in force. A new army, that is, which became the Galactic Empire that we all know and hate/love.. But I'm curious, after the fall of the Republic, if the Empire Hadn't risen up to take it's place, Was there any other factions big and strong enough to change the galaxy in the same ways Empire did (Expect the First Order, which are basically the same thing).?

General Discussion They’re keeping Oppo Rancisis alive for a reason. They even listed him as an Order 66 survivor…but what IS it?

My theory, and hope, is that he’ll appear in the third Jedi game. Santari mentions him by name in Dagan’s flashback, and when Cal gets to Tanalorr, he can hear echoes in the Force involving him, which is the first canon voice we’ve gotten for Oppo Rancisis Iirc.

General Discussion When Director Krennic attempted to throw Tarkin under the bus.

Post image

I mean what did he expect to happen? Vader just brush off the Jedha incident like it was no big deal? And then after trying to blame Tarkin for suggesting the test, is scolded and told not rest until he can assure the weapon is not compromised in any way. Chef's kiss was the Vader dad joke at the end. 🤣

General Discussion So…how did people refer to the Jedi mind trick, originally?

This is something I’ve wondered about for a long time. I wasn’t alive in 1977 so I couldn’t possibly know the answer.

In the original film, we see Obi-Wan use the Jedi mind trick for the first time. It’s not a named ability, he just gives a simple description that it works on the weak-minded.

Six years later, in 1983, Jabba refers to it as “an old Jedi mind trick,” so I’m assuming this is where the colloquialism originated. It’s the term that’s been adopted by fans, by some official media, etc.

What I want to know is…in that six year gap, how were fans referring to it? These were massive movies, beloved by nerds of the time, I’m sure this was a topic that was discussed, but I can’t find any record of it anywhere.
