Just curious…

How many of you own the Stargate SG1 DVD series? If you do, how many of you have episodes that won’t play properly?

In Season 1 I have an episode with Apophis that when he’s on, the sound goes out. Then in my Season 7 DVDs, Heroes 1 & 2 won’t play at all. I don’t know what to do about it, either. Any suggestions? I have a friend who might start watching the DVDs. That’s why I ask. TIA!

That is how I watched them. Here in Mexico they were only aired in very selected cable channels, that most TV services didn't had, so all I had was my trusty Music & Movies stores.

I own the DVD box set in silver that completes the picture of a Stargate if put side by side, watched all of them numerous times and never had a problem with any of them ✔️

I have them all becuae no streaming services had it here in NZ. Of course after I started watching them the series became available on Amazon which is lucky as season 5 DVD refuses to play

I have 6 of the seasons on DVD. So far, I've not had any issues with them (knock on wood)! But I have had dvds of other television programmes roughly the same age where I've encountered issues.

Are you certain it's the DVD itself? Or could it be the device? I've had some discs that just will not play on certain devices. The components are clean and operational. Other discs work without issue (including from the same set/pack).

Another option would be to clean the disc itself and try again. Sometimes, it's just enough to make the difference. There's a lot of options out there for "disc cleaners" and they range in price. I've had some success with this.

Wishing you luck OP!

I have 3 different copies. I have disks that are pretty scuffed and play well, and I have discs that have no visible issues but are iffy with certain files. Assuming whatever you're playing them in is clean and has no issues, I would say your only option is either disc repair or replace.

I don't remember having a problem with them, but haven't watched them in a while

I can’t speak to the episodes that refuse to play but the missing Apophis voice is a known issue dating back to 2009.

Mine all work, but I believe Archive.org has the episodes there if you need. It may be the disks themselves, or your reader. If your computer can read them, you can try them on it, it may work different if it was the device.

We have the separate boxsets of all seasons, and no issues here.

What's odd is that the Muted Apophis scenes in "The Nox" are fine in "Politics" on my copy. I believe it was a mixing error.

Sadly, those disks age and might need replacement some day.

In Season 1 I have an episode with Apophis that when he’s on, the sound goes out.

But this is an rather odd error, as audio tracks are usually stored finalized/mixed in the vob, so a single voice dropping out or sound dropping out depending on a visible character, that should not happen. Maybe there is some incompatibility of the codec playing back the audio in those areas. It's too specific to be based on deterioration of the disk. Gut feeling: AC-3 related, those codecs are a bit...complicated at times.

So... I'd test the disk on some other player but I'd probably replace it if it fails.

Interesting to see this posted today as I spent last night annoyed for this reason. For me, it's only Heroes Pt 2 and the Lost City that crap out, both on the same disc of 4 episodes. No visible damage on the disc and the other 2 episodes play flawlessly.

Don't have any issues with any other episodes in any other seasons, though.

Mine plays fine. Maybe 30 seconds of glitches throughout the entire series and 3 movies.

We have the DVDs and they all play properly! The only issue we sometimes have is that it doesn’t show the menu for episode selection and just skips straight to playing the first episode on the disc again

I have three different releases, and there are spotty issues here and there. Rarely will an episode not play at all -- in that case, you might try a different device (e.g., if you have a PC with a disc drive and DVD software, or a DVD player and a Blu-ray player with backwards compatibility).

The mute Apophis issue was evidently a mixing error, caused by the front channels accidentally being mixed to the back on a 5.1 surround mix. If you don't have a surround sound setup, see if your TV or audio device has a way to toggle through different sound mixes. If you can force it to play the stereo mix, it should fix the issue.

I'm 36, so I had to watch Stargate by dvd before bluray or streaming. I was a kid when Stargate was on TV, so I missed episodes. I don't have SGU though.

When my dvds' will not play properly I take a kleenex and dab it with rubbing alcohol and wipe from center outward, or if they appear cloudy.
