Message from the Mods Reminder: this is a spoiler-friendly subreddit

With the advent of new episodes on July 17, we thought it would be a good time to once again remind new subscribers that they will encounter spoilers on this subreddit.

Our subreddit has NOT opted into r/all or r/popular. That means its posts will not show up in those feeds. We have intentionally done this because we know our spoiler policy is not the norm on Reddit, and we do not want to catch individuals unaware.

The only way you will be spoiled by our subreddit is if you choose to subscribe to it, or if you manually visit it before you have seen the latest episodes.

As stated in our rules, welcome message, and sidebar, this community is aimed at individuals who plan on staying up to date on SNW and/or don't mind spoilers.

If you can't watch the new episodes as they're released, unsubscribing for a time is a perfectly understandable option. (Just don't forget to come back when you're caught up!)

TL;DR of our spoiler-friendly guidelines:

  • Expect spoilers about past, current, and upcoming content.
  • Spoilers will appear in both post titles and comment sections in this subreddit.
  • Both spoiler flairs and spoiler tags have been disabled to avoid giving new users the impression that this is a spoiler-safe place.

We ask users to subscribe at their own discretion.

If you have any questions or concerns about this post or any of our other guidelines, please send us a modmail.

LLAP, the r/StrangeNewWorlds mod team 🖖

Nobody knew Strange New Worlds when given a picture of Pike and Number One on Jeopardy tonight

It’s the season premiere of Jeopardy, and the three contestants had no idea what the show is. Total blank stares when shown a photo of the two leads in character on the bridge.

Other than the fact that it’s Star Trek day, I think it’s pretty damming and an unfortunate statement of this show’s popularity and impact on pop culture.

For the record, I enjoy SNW and wish it had a bigger audience.

Sure, it’s not a perfect show, but I enjoy the franchise immensely, and it’s a little deflating to see so little awareness of it at the moment.

Just Watched S2E2 and DAMN.

It was a really awesome episode and obviously great to see Una exonerated, but HOTdamn, Yetide Badaki absolutely CRUSHED IT as the civil rights lawyer Neera Ketoul. I haven't seen that actor in anything else but now I will actively seek it out. What an incredible PERFORMANCE.

I'm an American and none too pleased with the current political climate in our country amongst many other things that are wrong both here and worldwide, but it was encouraging to see things like this which were written by Americans and most likely also an international collection of folks who produce this show. Makes me proud to be a human. Which I think is the whole point of Star Trek.

Anyhow that's all I had to say. Just thought it it bore mentioning.

And again what an incredible performance by Yetide Bataki.

The writers are clearly going to have to devote an episode to when the fashion trend of men's blue eyeshadow caught on.

Gorn episode

The fact they killed the gorn broke my heart i really thought they were gorn save her and that would open interesting doors. It was so cool them showing they aint just blood hungry mindless monsters. There are thoughts behind them lizard eyes. Ugh tho i do wish they opted for a redemption arc heck maybe make the gorn one day part of star trek staff or is that too far off not canon

General Discussion Arghhh La’an I love you but 😓

Of course I love La’an but I’m so sad about the Gorn 😭

I wish she hadn’t immediately set her phaser to kill or had let Ortegas say something before she shot her

I understand why La’an reacted that way but man I had hope 😭

Spock's inevitable turn to a more logical persona

I am hoping that Spock's inevitable turn to a more logical persona isn't based on the death of a SNW crew member.

There are obviously a lot of scenarios that could cause this change. What I hope is that he decides that he can add more value as a starfleet officer with a more logical approach. Not that this is actually true - We all know that he will slowly learn that he is actually more valuable if he integrates both logic and emotions into his decision making. However, the recent "Four-and-a-Half Vulcans" episode makes it probable that his Vulcan half would think that his logic would be the most important contribution he could make.

What I would hate to happen is if the writers killed off somebody important just so Spock makes that change. I am fond of the SNW crew. I don't want one of them killed off near the end of the show just for that reason. I have a feeling that it's useless for even hoping that doesn't happen.

What are your current theories about how the change might come about?

Question Chapel’s doing science, M’Benga’s doing paperwork — anyone else notice?

Watching Strange New Worlds and I’ve noticed something — Dr. M’Benga kinda comes off more like an administrator, while Nurse Chapel feels way more like the actual doctor.

M’Benga’s usually doing the “chief” stuff — making big calls, handling crises, carrying the weight of command. Meanwhile Chapel’s the one in sickbay running experiments, inventing treatments, and doing all the hands-on science. Honestly, she feels more like the doctor than he does.

What’s weird is, in other Trek series, the doctors felt like doctors — Bones, Crusher, Bashir, the EMH, Phlox — all very hands-on with their patients and medicine. M’Benga feels a step removed, like he’s in management while Chapel’s the one actually practicing medicine.

Do you think that’s on purpose (Starfleet hierarchy stuff) or just the writers giving Chapel more of the spotlight? Because right now it feels like Chapel’s running the lab while M’Benga’s stuck filling out HR forms for Starfleet Command.

General Discussion Wishing all of you a happy Star Trek Day!

Since r/startrek has gone out of their way to treat me as unwelcome, I'm reaching out to this awesome community instead to wish all of you a very happy Star Trek Day!

Strange New Worlds may have been a mixed bag for many so far this season - myself included - but I'm still so thankful for the cast and crew and for its existence in the Trek universe.

Let's hope for some great Star Trek news and other goodies today and celebrate all things Trek!

Vanity Card

So that cool beginning where the Enterprise takes off and creates the Star Fleet insignia——there are Easter eggs there, right? Picard season 3 had one, too but I could tell what it was (Vadic’s ship). What the hell is in the left hand upper corner for SNW season 3?

Edit: I’ve been told now that not a vanity card. Still, what’s in the corner!?

Did the Enterprise crew know about the Gorn on the moon?

Since it was discussed in another thread wether Erica would have shot the Gorn on sight as well, I had another thought.

Did the rescue party know there is a gorn with Erica? They surely scanned the moon and should have received two lifesigns. Or did I miss something?

It doesn't make sense that pike let uhura off the hook that easily

No matter whether he knew the actual numbers and whether he would have went after ortegas anyway, a captain needs to be able to rely on the information communicated by the crew being accurate, especially when the safety of the ship hinges on it. It makes absolutely no sense that he would just brush it off this easily.

So is there a reason the Metrons particularly care about the Gorn?

So there were basically Gorn soul spheres on the Q homeworld inside a tesseract building.

And now the Metrons, another type of godlike being like the Q, have been shown to take an interest in the Gorn not once but twice, Terrarium and Arena.

Are they trying to tie the Metrons and the Q together? And does that mean the Metrons are closer to the Gorn than we ever realized?

"Division 12"... Star Trek has an X-Files division!!!

Not a spoiler as it has nothing to do with the episode... Surprised not to see anything more on this - Ortegus mentions in passing that there is a department dedicated to strange phenonimon such as Bemuda Triangles in space.

It's such an inocolous comment it feels like seeding a possible idea for future exploration. It would be a great way to create a new series in the existing universe while also moving in a new diretion.

S3E9 Air, Shelter, Water, Food

3 minutes, 3 hours, 3 days, 3 weeks

Ortegas was on that moon for a few hours and she's way too worried about food.

Also who stores rations next to the duct work? Way to go Starfleet.

Don't get me started on the monocular. Apparently in the 23rd century they are incable of matching the optical quality of a cheap monocular I can buy for $20 here and now in the 21st century.
