We recently had a competition here in the r/SuggestALaptop community in collaboration with LG where 10 lucky users were given either the new LG gram Pro 16 16Z90TS-G.AUG9U1 OR the LG Gram Pro 17Z90TP-G.ADB7U1. The agreement with these winners was that they would do written reviews of these laptops expressing how they feel about the features of the laptop after putting them through various tests.

My Review of the LG Gram Pro 17Z90TP AI Laptop

As the users complete and submit their reviews, we will share links to them here:

Announcement Ignore Private Messages Suggesting Laptops

The primary aim of r/SuggestALaptop is to provide a safe and transparent platform for suggesting laptops. Affiliate linkers are marked as such so that you are aware of the monetary incentive involved when making a purchase using affiliate links.

However, we are seeing an increasing number of cases where users posting on this subreddit are being targeted with unsolicited private messages containing links to laptops.

Such messages are best ignored for several reasons:

  1. Lack of quality control: We have no way of vetting suggestions sent via private messages. Moreover, these suggestions are not subject to the same level of public scrutiny that applies to suggestions posted in the subreddit, which are open for all to see and discuss.
  2. Hidden monetary incentive: Often such messages contain unmarked affiliate links, and these links might not even point to systems that are best suited to your requirements.
  3. Scams: Scammers often target unsuspecting users via private messaging. We do not want you to get scammed.

If you do happen to receive unsolicited messages suggesting laptops in private, please report the offending user to the mod team by sending us a screenshot of the message.

Thank you,

The r/SuggestALaptop Mod Team

Laptop Request UK Dual thunderbolt 4 laptop with 144hz+ 14-15inch screen

Upvotes

Laptop will mainly be used for streaming games from another PC. Screen needs to be between 14 and 15 inches with a minimum refresh rate of 144hz. Also would like a dual thunderbolt 4 setup as i may be connecting an eGPU and don't want to have bandwidth issues. Would prefer AMD over Intel but not that important. Price isn't a factor.

Thanks in advance

Laptop Request UK Suggest a Laptop for a University Student in the UK

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No budget Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, battery life and it being sturdy (not breaking easily if it falls etc) are most important to me, everything else would be a bonus How important is weight and thinness to you? I’m neutral about it Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing huge Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. If Sims counts, then Sims If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Just Sims, I’m just starting so I don’t know about settings or FPS Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Reliable build quality, a lot of space, a good keyboard, good battery life Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. This laptop is for uni (law), if possible dell is preferred because we have discounts on dell products but other laptops are fine if they’re better than dell products, my laptop has been pushed unto the ground a lot by people so many times so I really want a new laptop that could survive that and still function good. My previous laptops have all had issues with lagging so that is also important to me

Laptop Request US Need a windows laptop for college ($700 - $1,000) US

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700 - $1,000 US
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? Most likely not, but fine with it as a last resort
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I'm confused about what this is asking, but I'd like something with good performance and a high refresh rate (60hz minimum). Not much of a gamer, but I really enjoy a fluid display
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? As long as its "laptop" sized. I don't really need anything super compact
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13 to 15 inches is fine, I don't want anything huge
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I use Ableton Live sometimes, but I might also have to use CAD software in the future
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Minecraft at 60fps and 12 chunk render distance would be nice
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I'd like at least two usb ports and a trackpad that doesn't take 200 pounds of force to click with. Also if it ends up being a "gaming" laptop, I'd prefer to not have any flashy RGB since it's a little corny in my opinion
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I bought an M4 Macbook Air around a week ago. I really appreciate how buttery smooth the display is and how it runs when I have lots of tabs open, but I just can't get used to the operating system. Windows is just so much more natural to me, and I wanna see if I can return my macbook in exchange for something else that's equal the price or maybe even a little bit less.

Laptop Request US Looking for a laptop for college, preferably on the cheaper side ($500 USD is the absolute maximum)

Sorry, I'm unable to copy-paste the form (currently only have my phone, as my laptop is done), so I'm going to do my best.

I need a laptop to start school with next semester and am hoping for something on the cheaper side.

I previously had an asus vivobook and will likely get that again if nothing else is recommended. However, if something cheaper will work, I would love that.

I don't use a computer for anything else. If the laptop is touch screen, that's a plus, but the budget is more important than that. It must have a webcam and microphone for proctored tests.

The only thing I care about is that it runs respondus lockdown browser (taking out chromebooks - even though those are actually my preferred laptops for school) and able to run most online labs.

I’m going into construction management and I still don’t have a laptop, it’s technically like applied engineering so idk about a MacBook. I’m going to be using a lot of design software, planning/scheduling software, cost control, and communication software. I was automatically thinking windows like a dell xps over a MacBook, but what do you guys think.

I've been using a Macbook Air for 5 years and it's starting to crap out on me.

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$800 at most

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Refurbished for sure

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, battery life/build quality, form factor.

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Lighter and thinner is nice, but I value performance and durability more.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I've never used a ThinkPad but I feel like the 16:9 screen would throw me off.

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

eh. I own a vape shop so i'll be using it to hold a bunch of invoices/receipts, edit shop photos, make labels, etc.

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

N/A

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Solid durability, good portability, maybe a numpad, at least 512gb hard drive, 300+ nits screen

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

If anyone has any methods for transferring files from one laptop to another, I’d love to hear it.

Laptop Request Ca Means to an End Laptop for Work (Canada)

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase.

Canadian (CAD). Ideally, The $500 CAD range is where I'd want to be, preferably under. $600 is the hard cut-off - a means to an end device first and foremost.

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I don't necessarily mind the former, but would prefer new

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ok build quality, enough battery to last for most of a business day on a full charge, with ok specs that can give it some longevity (I5/I7 or Ryzen 5/7, 8GB Ram, 256GB or more SSD storage)

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not that important

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A

14" or 15.6" would be preferred

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run

Sole purpose is for work - Drywall Contractor. Main uses are for Quickbooks, my Takeoff software and dealing with emails.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A laptop that can charge through Power Delivery would be a nice quality as I'm frequently on the road/away from direct power sources.

Has to have a Windows based OS.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Had a budget Acer Nitro from summer 2020 to summer 2024, where it ultimately gave out on me. Been using an old backup Notebook from then-on, but it's been showing its age and I don't see lasting for that much longer.

I have a dedicated PC rig at home, which handles anything demanding; which is large part in why I'm not looking to go that heavy with the laptop.

Laptop Request US Macbook Alternatives That Can Also Game Decently? ~1000USD

Will start uni soon, math engineering major, was looking at laptops, though could not find a great fit. The biggest obstacle is, of course, battery life, since it's rare to see most of them perform enough for a day's worth. Design and weight are not greatly important; being portable would still be appreciated though. 1080p and 30+ fps for modern titles would be enough for gaming, prefer Nvidia GPUs for DLSS since the last time I saw FSR didn't look great.

Sorry for the messy writing, can't get my head together right now

Laptop Request US Laptop for an aerospace/mechanical engineering student

I love MacBook pros. All of my non engineering friends have one. How viable would it be for an aerospace engineering major to get a MacBook. I know CAD may be a problem on a MacBook Pro. I have seen where a lot of university’s are moving to VMs but I could be totally wrong. I have a nice windows laptop, but its battery life isn’t the greatest ever. I have also had issues with it, which I know would have never been a problem if I got a MacBook. Just wanted to see what y’all thought. I would like to stay around or under $2000.

Laptop Request US Under $1000 - US

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Under $1000

  • Are you open to refurbs/used?

No

  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance and build quality are most important, then battery life, and form factor

  • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not much of an issue, but I am a college student, so I need it to fit in my bag. I usually only carry a laptop, journal, folder and water bottle in my backpack.

  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14 – 16”

  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I’m a CS student so I would mainly use it for programming and studying. I need it to be able to run Unity editor (for a class).

  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I don’t plan on gaming.

  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build, and I prefer touchscreen.

  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I prefer to use windows, and I’m looking for 16 – 32 GB Ram. For the processor I would like something with core i7, core ultra 7, or Ryzen 7 processor (or better/equivalent). I don’t care to game on the laptop.

I was debating between these 2, but I’m open to other suggestions as well:

Laptop Request Ca Dell i3-1315U or HP i5-8365U — Which Should I Buy?

TL;DR: $300 laptops, Dell i3-1315U DDR5 vs HP i5-8365U DDR4, light school work + Brawlhalla — which should I pick?

Post:

I’m deciding between two local listings and could use some advice.

Options:

Dell Latitude 3450

Processor: Intel Core i3-1315U

RAM: 16GB DDR5

Display: 14" HD IPS

Storage: 256GB NVMe Gen 4 SSD

OS: Windows 11 Pro

OR

HP EliteBook 840 G6

CPU: Intel Core i5-8365U (quad core)

RAM: 16GB DDR4 (upgradeable)

Storage: 256GB SSD (upgradeable)

Screen size: 14"

Battery size: 53Wh

Not touch screen

My use case:

Web, Office/Google Docs, lots of tabs

Light coding / schoolwork, light photo edits

No heavy gaming (just Brawlhalla)

Both are priced at $300

Questions

  1. For everyday performance and battery life, which would you pick?

  2. Any common issues with either model (plastic vs aluminum chassis, thermals, fan noise, etc.)?

  3. Anything I should check in person before buying (battery wear %, panel resolution, BIOS lock, etc.)?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Laptop Request US Looking for a ~700 USD laptop

  • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700USD, would be willing to go $800USD if it's a good deal
  • Are you open to refurbs/used? I would prefer new, but I am open to it
  • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I don't know much about laptop specs, I would guess performance.
  • How important is weight and thinness to you? It could be a brick as long as it works well
  • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A
  • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I am going to be doing some 3D modeling, and gaming on it, maybe a little video editing. I mostly use blender, freecad, and davinci resolve
  • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I play a wide variety of games usually at 1080p 60fps, on my desktop I have a 2060 12gb vram so I would like something equivalent or better.
  • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would rather have a mechanical keyboard on it, but I would be fine with plugging one in.
  • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I am mostly wanting to have something I can move around the house with while working or gaming.
