I've only heard one side of the story. I love Deryck and it would be easy to have negative views just from his book but I ain't gonna judge without knowing the full story and I don't think we ever will.

I think it’s worth noting that Stevo is still friends with Dave, Cone, and Tom from my understanding. Whether there is still a fractured relationship between Stevo and Deryck, it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Stevo talks about it briefly on one of his first videos from his YouTube channel in response to Deryck’s biography.

Do you know which video?

Steve O is a drummer’s drummer. He’s sat in for the vandals, and on tracks like 32 Ways To Die, it shows that his overall skill is studio level. He’s probably studied rudiments and probably can play anything. As far as the band side, I always got the impression that he left Sum because the partying was destructive or maybe Deryck was insufferable.

I love the band, love the music, saw them at their last show and I have most of their albums; some even on vinyl.
All that said, holy hell does Deryck seem like such an insufferable person to be around.

His songwriting is okay. DTLI is my favorite, but to me, it’s because the drums are perfect. But yeah, Deryck needed Brownsound and Steve to get Sum to stand out.

He is a great drummer, funny, speak his mind, maybe a bit of an ass. Great human being all over. What amazes me is, how much distance he put between him and his past life. I don’t care what the book say. He is cool and i wish i can meet him, I started drumming thanks to him

u/hgihasfcuk 11d ago
In one of his recent videos he mentioned his kid just found out he was a drummer in sum 41. The kid was singing a sum41 song and bro's like hey that's me hahah

u/BackgroundLock560 11d ago
Ahaha yeah I have seen this video. Also they are total oblivious about who Fat Mike is. It’s so funny.

He was the personality and soul of the band. After he left, the band lost its essence

I love Stevo. A lot of his songs helped shape me as a drummer. I was real sad to see him leave the band. I love Zummo too, and have no negative feelings for either of them. It just sucks when things don’t work out

In terms of technical skills, Zumo is better, plus hes a great guy and has written some great drum parts. With that said, sometimes when he plays old Sum 41 songs I cannot help but feel that he is overplaying them and exaggerating too much just to play something a bit different than the original track. Steve was the soul of the band, he was charismatic as hell and his drum parts worked so well, and matched the Sum 41 style. His YT videos are cool as hell and I'm happy he's back at playing drums

I finished reading the book a minute ago and without knowing more sides of the story, since it's only from Deryck's perspective, I gotta say that I'm disappointed in Stevo's behavior. But hey, at least he was man enough to send an "I'm sorry" email years later.
It's always been disappointing he fractured away from the band because he was almost the face of it more than the frontman, which is pretty uncommon.

I stopped listening to Sum 41 after Stevo left. It was probably more just my tastes changing (I discovered prog metal and djent around this time) but I'm gonna blame Stevo leaving

Drumming became bland on 13 Voices and onward.
I think Zummo is an overall better drummer, sure, but I think he played it very safe.
Steve's drumming, on the other hand, was very much a stand out part of all the albums he's was a part of.

u/PopPop-Magnitude 11d ago
I dont think Zummo is better. He did use fx with sums to recreate studio drum moments (such as on walking disaster, with me etc) which I appreciate because stevo never did that, but Zummo has zero dynamics in his playing. He only seems to know how to play hard and fast, and thats it

u/TheDuurg 11d ago
Yeah, it's arguable. I have a bias for Steve, definitely, he's my main drumming influence and that is what I meant when I said that the drumming took a dip since 13 Voices. It's the same all the time.

I love him, seems like a genuine nice guy on top of a good drummer
too bad that they split out with deryck

u/DeadlyMustardd 10d ago
Pretty funny, definitely obnoxious, probably a bit of an asshole, but I like him a lot.

Great drummer, great personality. Really the co-leader of the band in his time there. After he left (whether by design or necessity) the band became Deryck + the band and that was felt creatively. Which is a shame with the likes of Thom Thacker (yes, I'm a big GOB fan too) and later Brownsound in the band. I still went to see them every time they toured in the UK and they always put on a great show.

Underrated drummer in the grand scheme of things, dude can absolutely fucking rip.

u/ARandom_Toasty 10d ago
I think Deryck twisted the story a little. But I don’t believe stevo in a lot of stuff either. I think the whole thing is just a messy situation. Besides that dumb drama. I owe a lot to him I lack motivation in continuing drums and when I listen to his drumming it gives me the motivation again and I love his basement videos

After reading Deryks book he's kind of an ass hole

u/Forgotten_X_Kid 11d ago edited 11d ago
It's Deryk's side of the story, and at the time he was really in too deep (pun intended) with drugs and alcohol
Can't blame Stevo to feel betrayed when his friend missed concerts 'cause he was wasted
I think they all have some kind of fault in how they managed their success

Derycks book is quite 1 sided tbh
27
u/rodimus117 11d ago
Not only was it very one sided but it was void of any accountability either. “So I didn’t show up for this show…why is everybody all of a sudden so mad at me and treating me differently?!” x100

u/chrisreiddd 11d ago
I mean it is his book lol

u/hgihasfcuk 11d ago
They should make a book like nofx hepatitis bathtub, and then a group audiobook. Probably too late for that though.

u/GumpTheChump 11d ago
I don’t think anyone comes out unscathed from that book, particularly Deryck.

u/United_Character6695 11d ago
Stevo was fed up of all the BS. He was a father who had responsibilities, shows were getting cancelled meaning he was losing money and food was being taken off his table to feed himself and his family. He saw his best friend slowly killing himself with alcohol.
I’m sure it was a tough situation to be in. Stevo has gone on record saying he wishes he had left the band when Dave initially left after Chuck. He hates the later era of the band and never talks about it much on his channel I’ve noticed (UH and SBM era).

Those were my faults but i’d like to here Steve os side
edit: thoughts

u/Key-Pomegranate-2086 11d ago
Based on the book, his side is pretty simple. Derryk was literally abandoning his job and ditching concerts. So yeah he definitely needed an intervention. Steve o was just the completely wrong guy to do it. Derryk isn't going to respect you if you're a drugged out crazy guy yourself lol.

Stevo was a father also had other priorities and his friend didn’t want his help

Stevo’s personality was very much the outward vibe of the band on the first 3 records. I personally don’t think Sum 41 is as commercially successful in the early 2000s without Steve in the band.
