Help me to decide which Surface Pro to buy

I’m looking to buy a Surface Pro, but I’m not sure which model to pick—there are so many! My needs are pretty simple:

  • Run several light apps at once: Office + MathType + Chrome (3–4 tabs) + Foxit PDF.

  • A great pen experience (like a real tablet) for online teaching and creating study materials.

  • Light gaming like Stardew Valley :v (nice to have, not a priority).

  • Long battery life, at least 8–10 hours with above usage, since I’m out working all day (this matters most).

  • USB-C that supports fast charging and HDMI output (I’ve got a 200W power bank I’d love to use, and I often plug into external displays).

  • Best value for money :v I’m a humble teacher on a budget!

Also, which online stores are trustworthy? I’m in Vietnam and don’t have local retail options nearby. Thankyou!

I used GPT to translate this, so sorry if the wording isn’t very smooth :v

[PRO8] How to care for alcantara on the keyboard?

Upvotes

I got a refurbished Surface Pro 8 as a gift a while back, almost perfect condition (some blemishes here and there but nothing to complain about). It's been a great upgrade, but after some months of daily use as a university student, it gets dirty. I clean it routinely but I don't know how to clean or care for the alcantara on the keyboard. Is there a proper way to clean this type of material? Does dirt get trapped in it like other materials? Do I have to avoid the keys and the trackpad when cleaning so I do not damage them?

Help with Surface purchase

Just wondering if the below would make a decent enough work laptop - seems to suggest i7 11th gen that can do 3GHZ.

It's not needed for super intensive stuff, but ideally would run Affinity (Adobe alternative) better than my MacBook Air 2020 which is now pretty awful, so just wondering if this would do the job for a few years at least.

Thanks :)

[PEN] Surface randomly decides when to ignore touch when writing

When I'm writing it randomly stops and the only way to fix it is to lift my hand up. I have ignore touch on and I have it set for the correct hand. Already reinstalled drivers but it still won't write consistently for more than a word or two.

[LAPTOP7] This might be a stupid but is the Surface Laptop 7 with XPlus considered a "High-End" Laptop?

Was just wondering tbh. Is it considered "high-end" or more "mid-range-ish"?

[LAPTOP2] Should I upgrade?

I've had a Surface Laptop 2 since 2018. It's the most reliable computer I have ever owned. I've used it for school and work, as well as gaming and other personal use throughout different periods of my life with only two minor issues:

  1. WiFi connectivity: it frequently would not automatically connect to the network and sometimes cannot even find my network for awhile. No other device in my home has this issue.
  2. Slow clock: the clock can end up 5-10 minutes behind within a few months of very light use. I usually have to go in and manually update or reset something to get it caught back up.

I recently reset it to factory settings when I thought I was going to give it to a family member and that seems to have corrected the WiFi issue but the clock quickly fell behind again.

I also have a Surface Laptop Studio 2 that I bought for school last year when I was going to be doing some more heavy use. The form factor was excellent for what I needed it for at the time. But I have since left school, and find myself picking up my 2018 laptop when I need to do something instead for the following reasons:

  • the battery life is abysmal
  • it overheats easily
  • it's very heavy
  • I've gotten the blue screen randomly a few times (in the middle of browsing, it just forced a shutdown and restarted but then ran fine after that)

Other than the blue screen, these are all downsides I was aware of before purchasing, but they didn't cause any issues since I was exclusively using it while sitting at a desk doing homework and taking notes.

Since I almost never use the SLS2 anymore, I was considering selling. I love it, but it's not really ideal for casual use (sitting on the couch and browsing/gaming for long periods). I moved everything back over to my 2018 laptop, but then started thinking about selling them both and upgrading to a newer model. Is there anything a newer model has that would be worth upgrading? Is the clock issue on my SL2 possibly indicative of a bigger problem? I've even considered a MacBook again because I don't need to run Excel anymore and heard great things about the M4 chips. Also, any advice on selling on FB marketplace/trading in through Microsoft or BestBuy or something similar?

(SLS1) Fan stops, laptop overheats, needs complete reboot holding power to get back working

At least once daily the fans in the laptop will stop working. The laptop temp will go up, which in turn will reduce CPU speed to a crawl. Regular reboot does not fix it. I need to hold Power button for 10 seconds to do full power cycle, (there is a faint click when it does it) , and then fans start working on subsequent reboot bringing temperature down and everything back to normal.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Not a lot of information out there when searching. There is no way to check fan speed via PowerShell or other means so I cannot monitor it and alert when temp raises and fan not running to take action proactively.

BTW MODS: please add flair for SLS1

What can the sp11 do?

Hello everyone! I am looking into the surface pro 11 because I like the idea of a laptop that can be detachable and can be used for drawing as well as software work, but am not so sure. The programs I would want a detachable laptop to run would be the following: Clo3d, Adobe creative suite (ilustrator, photoshop, etc ), and Microsoft office. Please let me know as to what suggestions you all have.

[PRO3] Surface USB via DisplayPort?

Hi, I've read about it, DisplayPort can handle (enable) USB if the devices connected have such capabilities. This depends on the computer, destination, and cable.

I'm interested on buying a computer monitor with USB ports with absolutely no USB input (the USB is enabled via the DisplayPort).

What I don't know, and I've been unable to find, is... if the Surface Pro 3 has such capabilities. Any info you may share will be appreciated, it can be regarding other Surface models as well, but Pro 3 would be great.

[GAMING] Gaming on surface pro?

I’ve been looking at the new surface pro for my next laptop/tablet. It mostly would be for school/work meetings but I occasionally like to play games like Among Us, Goose Goose Duck, or A Little To The Left. I saw online that the surface pro is not meant for gaming and really shouldn’t be used as such but would games like these at least be playable?

[OFFICE] Surface pro 12 shifting on OneNote

I'm experiencing an issue where my palm triggers the on-screen scroll function, causing the page to shift while I'm writing with the pen.

Anyone else experiencing this on OneNote?

[LAPTOP7] I want to return my Laptop 7 for a Surface Pro because it's Sapphire. Stop me.

Kinda hate they're limiting fun colors to lower end models. 15 is prefect for everything from work to media consumption. I'm really just using it casually, some coding/docker/k8s for learning I have a gaming desktop I use for everything heavier if I truly need that type of horsepower (which I don't, haven't gamed since March).

But damn when I actually saw my coworker with the Sapphire Surface Pro I became stupidly infatuated

[PRO7] Surface pro 7+

My Surface has this issue where the touch screen stops working on the top area. It doesn't always happen, but when it does, I keep using the device and it heats up, then the touch function comes back to normal for a day or two. Then the issue returns.

it's not bad, just annoying.

I have a theory about this being related to moisture but i open to any recommendations

[LAPTOP7] Surface Laptop 7 battery life

I'm planning to maybe buy a surface laptop 7, and I'm looking at the 13.8 inch with the Snapdragon X Plus. However, I am really concerned with battery life. Some people say it's incredible, yet others say it's horrendous. I need at least around 8 hours of battery life with regular use (Web browsing, working on docs, watching YouTube videos). Is it possible that the laptop can achieve that?

My Surface won't charge nor open after being drained.

My Surface drained because I wasn't able to charge it for a few hours due to me going to school, ever since then my surface won't charge nor turn on. I've tried various ways in opening it such as the reset keys (hold power and volume up) but none ever work. Even the charger isn't lighting up. What seems to be the problem, and if so. What will be the thing to be fixed?

[GAMING] I am up to 206 games on my list but i need your help to make this list better. Help me expand it!

Title, a few days ago i posted a link to my spreadsheet that catalogues what games run and don't run on my Surface which runs an X Elite.

when I submitted this list, I did so with 170 games and counting. But I am only one person and I have made up my mind that I would like this list to be a usable database but I cant do it alone.

i only have so many games and nor does my game library represent the vast, gaming landscape.

So, I am seeking community help to fill out this spreadsheet.

here's what I need if you want to contribute.

  • the name of the game
  • did it launch? (get to the main menu!)
  • was it playable? (30Fps REGARDLESS of settings)
  • did it have any issues? (from stutters, rendering artifacts, and if it didn't launch, what did it do?)
  • the windows version and its build number
  • the graphics driver version
  • and the device it was played on ALONG with the SOC it was with!

credit WILL be given.

a link to the list will be posted in the comments (as putting it in the post seems to get it caught up in reddits filters)

[LAPTOP7] Surface laptop 7 repair

I received a surface laptop 7 that I purchased from CEX as a grade B, and it has arrived with a slightly bent display module that has resulted in the screen not being properly seated on the screen in that area.

As the surface is still under warranty I went on the repairs website and it said that as the laptop was purchased less than 3 years ago I could be entitled to a repair or replacement free of charge.

Has anyone used this, or a similar programme, and if so, is there any good chance I'll get the replacement? I really love this laptop and I don't think CEX are gonna be any help, despite the laptop clearly not being a grade B

[PRO9] SurfacePro 9 UEFI Couldn’t Find a Bootable OS

My Surface Pro 9 suddenly booted into the UEFI screen. I tried using a USB drive to start the system. I created a bootable recovery drive on another computer using the “Create recovery drive” option and then copied the system recovery image files from the Microsoft Surface site.

At first, the USB drive was recognized when I pressed the volume down and power buttons, and I had the option to boot from the drive. When I clicked it, I got a message saying “There was a problem restoring the system using USB” (or something similar).

Now, the device doesn’t recognize the USB at all and instead shows “Couldn’t find a bootable system.”

How can I tell if my SSD is damaged? In the UEFI, I can still see the internal storage listed along with the USB recovery drive and two other options. I made sure to set USB first in the boot order when trying to recover.

For reference, I used a new Lexar 128 GB flash drive that I formatted to FAT32 before making it a recovery drive.

[PRO11] Examplify issue

Hello! My old Surface Pro was desperately in need of an upgrade, so today I went to Best Buy and got the new one (see attached for specs). I downloaded Examplify/Examsoft so that I could get everything set up before I resume school next week, and every time I try to open the application, I get this notice about "Invalid system configuration" (see attached).

After reading the minimum system requirements, it seems like the issue is that my new Surface uses an ARM processor. I was unaware this would be an issue and would've considered other options as my College/program exclusively uses Examplify. Long story short, are there any options to fix this issue or try to troubleshoot it? I would really like to avoid either 1)having to buy a new computer or 2) using my old one (the battery sucks/it dies unless it's plugged in, and there are minimal outlets in the classroom). TIA!

Surface Kickstand came loose?

I accidentally pressed too dark back on the open kickstand and now it’s loose and won’t go back in. It’s still connected but it won’t press back in. This is my school’s laptop and I do not have $400 to replace the kickstand, nor the money to buy a whole new one. Is there anyway I can fix this without buying anything? The hinges still move, they just won’t stay in one spot. They like slide around

[MSFT] microsoft surface pro for university?

i'm a nursing major and wanted a surface pro because of the touchscreen and the ability to use a keyboard as well. i wouldn't be running a lot of programs except for note taking apps, downloading lectures, etc. purely for uni use. out of the 7, 8, 9, which would be most worth it? all are refurbished from best buy.
