Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

2.6k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

My brother is making me post in this forum. I just moved in with my roommates and decided to place the TV here. What do you guys think? I think my brother is wrong.

Need advice on lowering my setup

115” TCL QM7K (about 220 lbs) sitting on an 18” high console. From my couch, my eye level is ~40”, but the center of the TV sits around 47–48”. I’m getting some minor neck strain looking up at it.

Finding a low-profile stand (around 11–12” tall, 18” deep, wide enough for this TV) that can handle the weight has been impossible, and I really don’t want to wall mount something this heavy.

Does this look too high to you? And does anyone have recommendations for sturdy, low-profile stands that could work with a TV this size?

Thanks in advance.

Soon as I walk into my buddy’s new man cave he asks “is the TV too high”… so at least he knew he committed a crime against comfortable football watching 🫠

My friend has been hyping up his new tv for about a month. Haven’t seen it yet until now. No downward tilt but it’s oddly tilted to the left. What we thinking (pic is at a seated eye level)

Feels like the tv is too high slightly...despite being on a stand?

Moved to a new room and ever so slightly it feels higher, my eyes are about lower third, odd because I used to be able to watch it laying down in bed more easier?

Maybe i just am getting used to it?

Also do you think a 65 inch would be better? Seems weird as its slightly further away in this house, its about 2.4m away rather than previous 1.9 meters , I could move it closer but then its in the middle of the room aha
