The 100's one allowed F-bomb Spoiler

Since PG-13 movies are allowed one f-bomb (or profanity of similar magnitude) used in a non-sexual way and keep the rating, let's assume the same is true for series (I'm too lazy to google if that's true).

The 100 never used its presumed free pass though. I can speculate on why that is (probably not to draw attention that, among this mixture of stressed out, traumatised teens, ruthless warriors living in a primitive, tribal culture and hardened criminals from outer space, nobody swears - it's easier if the subject is never brought up), but where's fun in that?

So, if you were to put one "fuck" somewhere in the show, how would you use it?

The whole question came to me because i just watched s06e07, where Clarke tells Josephine to go float herself and Josephine is like "i don't know what that means" and "fuck you" would be a good answer. But then I thought about it some more and I think that a better use would be Murphy's recording he makes in the bunker in the first episode of s03 - "screw you" really feels jarring after such a rant and it's probably the only scene in the whole show that i felt, then and there, needed stronger wording, because it just didn't sound like something a real person would say in an emotional moment.

Other idea would be Lincoln's death scene, as an answer to "any last words?"

To me "go float yourself" was a nice 100-branded swear like "frakk" in Battlestar Galactica. It felt really off when they introduced profanity in Star Trek or even The Walking Dead

Oh yeah, it works pretty well, and sounds like something that could naturally evolve into the language of people who lived in space for a few generations. It would also add nothing of value if the characters swore every other sentence. But there's a use for profanity in writing, because it does have an effect on people. Especially in PG stuff, where you don't expect it.

Quill yelling at Nebula to “open the fucking door” in Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 was probably the funniest joke in the movie, and Wolverine's "go fuck yourselves" in X-Men First Class immediately tells you he means business (or no business, rather). This is the kind of examples I'm looking for.

To be fair, BG's brand of swearing-workaround actually grated on me for a long time before i got used to it. I did like FIrefly's approach though, where they would just switch to Chinese for (presumed) profanity.

Yep being an on air tv show they couldn't say fuck but float was used very effectively

Star Trek was so weird when they would do f-bombs. Like not even at exciting parts lol

That's an easy one: Everything under Kurzman isn't really Star Trek. Just remember that rule and it's a lot easier to handle.

I think it should have belonged to one of the prisoners, they would still be using present day swear words. Or perhaps Becca says it to Cadogan, as the end of the world literally started with her, he definitely screwed it even more by killing her. The whole premise essentially started around their hatred of eachother.

Yeah that makes much sense. Like when Diyoza and McCreary fight and she is like “you kill me you kill our baby” and he just responds with “fuck you “ right before she stabs him in the neck. Would’ve been epic asf.

Not sure when, but I’d give it to Octavia. Has to be at least one moment my girl could’ve used it well.

That could be cool, yeah, especially since she probably wasn't taught to swear growing up, having only her mother and Bellamy as her teachers and pretty much no other social contacts.

I can't think of a good scene for that though.

Her confrontation with Echo, after the bunker is opened maybe? Or maybe her being stuck with Diyoza in the sandpit when Diyoza is bestowing her with life wisdom?

Am I the only one that thought ‘Go float yourself” was a worse swear then fuck. In the context of the story it basically telling someone to go ‘kys’

Definitely. I think people overlook it since it was intended as a way to say “go fuck yourself” while censoring the word“fuck” without a bleep, but actually in universe it’s so much worse than “go fuck yourself”

It is allowed (they did it in stranger things) but I don’t think it was allowed in network tv at the time. Streaming is ok but I think individual networks decide what they’ll allow

The FCC decides it for the most part. I’m glad you brought this up because I know I’ve heard the F bomb being dropped but only on the dvds (Sons of Anarchy). Has anyone else noticed this? Is it common?

The 100 aired on The CW which is a broadcast network (not a cable channel). I believe swearing in broadcast TV is only allowed after 10PM. Not sure when its time slot was but most primetime shows air earlier than that.

On cable and streaming, there are no language restrictions.

Season 3 premiere when Murphy yells "Screw You" would work very well as "Fuck You"

Fun fact: In the German dub, he actually does yell the F-word in that scene.

They originally aired on network TV where it definitely wasn't allowed. I would probably give it to Clarke when Finn died though

i think it should go to raven, she deserves swearing

I genuinely thought that Raven swore at least one time. I didn't even know that they didn't swear through the whole series.

i mean she might have

It was a TV show on the CW network. Over air TV shows arent allowed to say shit or fuck or nudity full boobs/vag/dick. Some shows push it with ass (male and female) and near nip slips. The 100 pushed the nudity pretty far. Being on The CW it probably pushed the limits as hard as any show since NYPD Blue which showed some asses and was a big controversy in the 1990s. I'm 37 so dont remember when it happened but heard it was. Also the opening scene of highlander TV show was pushing it with the girl showed pretty naked in the shower then they obviously fuck...again 1990s they did push things. I think the Janet jackson episode and the major fines made TV shows skeptical to push limits for 10 years or so

I love the way they replaced "go fuck yourself/yourselves" with "go float yourself/yourselves" it did take a while to get used to when I first started watching but it's lowk funny as hell

It helps that we were introduced to the concept of "floating" before it's first used as an expletive - you immediately go "oooh, right" when you hear it for the first time.

Not to mention that it's actually even stronger of an insult when you think about it. "Fuck you" is rather non-lethal, while "go float youself" is basically telling someone to "kill yourself".

Clarke, at the end of the universe.

Clarke, her guns pointed wide.

u/EdenGardenof Diyoza 🗡 21h ago

I’d give it to Clarke when she’s about to point the gun to her head in the season five premiere

u/I_amnotreal 21h ago

Oh yeah, that's a good moment. Her entire tantrum in the desert seems like just the spot.

I think Bojack's method worked well. One per season, being very careful to make it have the most impact. Of course almost every one of those was some form of people asking Bojack "What the fuck is wrong with you?"

u/I_amnotreal 16h ago

You could add it to every time someone says "shut up, Murphy", but I'm sure you'd end up with more than one a season.
