Announcement [Meta] The State of TheDragonPrince
Please take the short poll here regarding the state of submissions on the subreddit
I promised this a while ago, so here it is. Users have raised concern regarding the amount and type of content prevalent on the subreddit as of late. I know people feel strongly about the subject, so I think it's important to get your thoughts on the matter.
Is there too much fan art? Not enough discussion? Not enough fan art? TOo much discussion? Whatever your thoughts are, let us know here. Feel free to give any thoughts on the the rules, moderation, or anything else that may come to mind.

I think fanart and memes do an amazing job at populating the feed of this subreddit, and I'd argue that discussion posts themselves are too infrequent rather than fanart being too common.

It doesn't help that way too many discussions are just "I CRACKED THE CODE: CALLUM IS A HALF-ELF!" or "HARROW IS IN THE BIRD, RIGHT!?" or other some such threads.
The fanart is rarely reposts, but many of the discussions are just regurgitations of older threads.

You have a filter for "no spoilers"; you could always add another filter for "no fan art". (assuming people tagged their posts appropriately)

As long as there's a separate flair for "one's own fanart" and "someone else's work". Please don't lump in my art, that I actually spend effort on, with the posts from people who just browse Tumblr all day and copy and paste other people's art here """for exposure""".

I mostly lurk here, haven't quite gotten up the guts to jump in and be active, but I have to admit that the overabundance of fanart has something to do with it. I know people love to see it, but I have a lot of artist friends and I know that they hate having their fanart reposted. When a random person posts it here they don't get the upvotes and don't see the praise. If the fanart was shared as a direct link only it would be an extra step for people here to see it, but the artists deserve those hits. Just something to consider. Maybe approaching some of the artists and asking their feelings on it could help. Might entice the artists to sign up and participate.

Fan art is a part of fandom, and a lot of this poll seems geared to it. Please don’t take it away, because if you do you will be especially killing the sub.

I agree. Don't worry, we're absolutely not taking away fan art regardless of results. It's just something that has been a hot topic to some users. We want to get peoples thoughts on the amounts we currently see.

That’s good to hear. r/swordartonline enacted a rule limiting fan art a while back, and it became a barren wasteland as most of the dedicated users stoped posting.

That's a relief to hear. A certain other subreddit I visit has recently taken the stance of following anything that wins a vote, no matter how stupid, rather than thinking for themselves. It's not really any different to abandoning all rules and relying on upvotes/downvotes, and it shows.

Nothing wrong with fanart, just artists should be posting it themselves instead of having non-artists capitalise on their hard work for free karma.

Yeah I don't think that the sub can survive on discussion alone, especially with how Netflix releases entire seasons at a time.

I agree, my husband and I send the fan art to each other to make the other smile.

So far, I don't think there's need to change anything. Fanarts pretty much keep alive this subreddit right now. Once S3 is released, there will be much more theories/things to discuss about. This happens in every other subreddit, after all. Just look at Undertale, Devil May Cry, HTTYD, or other ones, fanarts/drawings are everywhere, just because there is nothing else to discuss about.
Just wait third season.

This community is one of the most alive on fandom TDP. I am an artist, and I came here after someone posted here my artwork (:D) because I receive a lot of comments to it, more than anywhere. Yep, I`m creating a content and it`s important for me to get feedback so I just going on)
And I can say shippers love shipping fanarts :D
But it would be better if artist themselves will share their content, not posting somebody`s work for free carma.
Also there is a lot of great memes here lmao :D

After s2 there was a lot of shipping-related fanart and discussions so I'd say maybe we could agree on certain days being there for posting shipping stuff (discussion/art)? Like, only on Sundays for example. (When a new season comes out maybe twice a week, not sure.)
Right now the amount of general non-shipping fanart seems all right. I think a couple weeks back there was a lot more fanart flooding the sub but it's calmed down. After the s3 release we might get swamped with it again so I guess some rules regarding that would be good.

The current state is fairly good. No complaints. The fan art was getting a bit much a couple of weeks ago, but it was just a season.

Its the off-season. Naturally we aren't going to get as many discussion geared posts until closer to S3. The amount of fanart is a testament to the popularity of the show and how active its fandom is. I think we are fine as it is.

I hope we see more Janai and Amaya, there was comic with the two roasting bread slices.
(lava sword and stone-tough bread Baguette/Franzella)
Makes me wonder if bolt of them survive, and there are people who ship them
would they found common ground. Since bolt of them hate the opposite site, that is Xadia and Katolis.

i think there needs to be more talk about this show the theory of callum being a dragon prince and him disguising himself as a elf in season 3 is going to be hyped up.

I like to see art posted here by the person who created it. I'm a grown woman who knows how to use deviantART, Tumblr, Pinterest, and Google; there's no need to fill up the subreddit with things that are easy to find elsewhere. Even with credit to the original source, or permission, posting someone else's work somewhere is gauche and in fact on most other subreddits it's not even allowed.
If you're an artist, cool, post your TDP stuff! If you're not, that's fine, you don't have to leave or anything but there are other ways for you to contribute. Start discussion posts, upvote people's fanart, etc. I've noticed that even when an original artist is clearly labelled and linked, some people don't pay attention to that and assume whoever posted the art is the one who created it, and we want to avoid confusion like that!

If people decide to lower ammount of certain posts you can always do something like "Fan art friday". Basically have 1, 2 (or as many as you think is good) days when certain rules (like ammount of fan art posts) are relaxed
