Ok I don't read sign language but I'm pretty sure the aunt said I'm going to tap that later.

I thought so too

I mean strictly speaking that hand holding could have just been a way to say "Hey look, we're biracial human-elf friends too!" but... yeah probably not

Now that Rayllum has been accomplished, I'm full steam ahead on the SS Jamaya

I'm 100% okay with this being a thing, but I wish there was a buddy relationship rather than 2 romances.

At this point it seems like Callum's family just has Elf-fever.

Although they did good small scenes, like the broken-chain soldier and the elf soldier, I feel that with all the romances, we're missing a basic friendship, and that's important. It doesn't have to be "Silent Sun" or whatever we're going to call them (Sorry, I've been around RWBY too long...) but I think friendships would be equally meaningful.

I think Soren's going to fill that roll for all three of the main gang going forward. He hasn't really had any love interests yet and now that he's been reintegrated with the good guys, he'll have a chance to build his friendships back up with all three of them.

Amaya and Gren also seem really close, even if we don't see as much of them. And the glimpses we've been able to catch of Harrow and Viren are along those lines as well, especially because a lot of our sympathy for Viren comes from his friendship with Harrow.

It would be nice to get a really prominent friendship with as much time spent on it as the relationships, but I would say we're in a good place for existing ones to be expanded. Plus the relationship stuff has only come to the forefront in S3; before that it practically didn't exist. The show moves fast.

I mean a human/elf buddy relationship.

At the moment there's two romances but no friendships outside of Rayla and Ezran, which isn't developed at all really.

I want a Legolas/Gimli equivalent.

Oh yeah, that's a good point. We definitely need that.

It also sucks, but I agree with you about Rayla and Ezran. I'd blame it on shorter seasons, but it felt like the Aang Gang was twice as developed by the end of Book One of The Last Airbender. I think the real issue is that TDP has had a highly serialized format as opposed to a more episodic one. You can do a lot with your characters when they're dealing with and learning from a new problem every episode, but it's much harder to flesh out an ensemble cast when every episode has to deal with a bunch of season-long conflicts.

The nine-episode seasons are just way too short for a number of reasons, and I get that it's more than likely for budget purposes, but I really think it's hurt the show's ability to establish anything other than surface-level relationships.

As most people are saying, the lack of "filler" means that any character progression feels more rushed, and certain characters don't really develop. People said the same when comparing The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra.

I love the show, but I think it's a bit constrained.

u/Insanepaco247 Human Rayla Nov 25 '19

Yeah, I've come to realize that true "filler" is pretty rare and that standalone episodes can count for a lot when it comes to character development. I loved Korra, but like you say, I had the exact same issues with that series. I definitely prefer week-to-week adventures with an overarching narrative to constant plot plot plot, at least when it comes to cartoons.

In season 4 I need to see Amaya and Rayla having sparring sessions!

What about Amaya and her second in command tho... I feel like at least he's crushing on her.

The sun elf queen told her to have fun with her "pet"

18

u/UniversalFriend Nov 24 '19

She said something along the lines of "She thinks I'm cute, but isn't willing (to admit it) yet"

6

u/ElevatedPotato Nov 23 '19

Go to the scene where Amaya and the sun elf hold hands in front of the dragon queen. You can see that Glen is good with it too lol.

u/Rai-Hanzo Callum Nov 23 '19

This should be the response to every post about those two, lol.

5

u/Rai-Hanzo Callum Nov 23 '19

god damn it.

9

u/CouteauBleu Nov 23 '19

Probably not, the show needs its not-killed-in-the-backstory lesbian rep'.

5

u/Rai-Hanzo Callum Nov 24 '19

representation is like a cherry on top of the cake, it's nice to have but the cake won't taste worse if it's not there.

also it is rather quick to make them lesbians, also there are many other lesbians in other shows but not enough gays.

4

u/triggerhappymidget Nov 30 '19

Everyone on Reddit always says this, but if you look at GLAAD's media report, gay men still make up the largest percentage of LGBT+ characters. Broadcast, cable, and streaming all have more gay characters than lesbians.

Now, if we're talking about children's programming specifically, there may be more queer female characters, I honestly don't have data on that, but this general "lesbians get all the representation" idea is blatantly false.

7

u/Rai-Hanzo Callum Dec 01 '19

what i find lacking is representation of Bi men, or Bisexuals who end up in straight relationship considering that includes 90% of all bisexuals.

gay men being over represented elsewhere is news to me.

4

u/triggerhappymidget Dec 01 '19

You can check out the most recent media report here. I find it pretty interesting to peruse. Bisexual men are definitely way outnumbered by bisexual women, and I can't speak to which ones end up with women as I don't actively watch any shows with bi men. I know Daryl on Crazy Ex Girlfriend did.

2

u/Rai-Hanzo Callum Dec 01 '19

interesting.

personally i don't care about representation, i don't see much left-handed or ADHD or north African representation in western media, so i enjoy it for what it is, although rarely considering that most western media don't appeal to me.

I love the fact that I knew what this video was before I clicked the link, and it's SO accurate.

So like, I legit can’t tell if I’m just shipping this, or if this is literally textual.

I legitimately thought this was textual until I was talking with a fiend about how it’s weird that they went from beating the shit out of each other to in a relationship in the span of a day and completely skipped the flirtatious will they/won’t they stage, and only in that conversation did I catch that their relationship may not have been meant to be textual.

Like, holding hands in the last shot of the show is all the evidence we got for Korrasami, which is cannon. And the. Right before these two, the actual breeding pair hold hands, specifically to signify their relationship to the dragon queen and Amaya observers this happening and points it out to Janai before they hold hands. Like specifically making sure everyone knows exactly what they’re doing.

Yeah basically lmao
