Beverly
I'm just watching this now and half way through second series. I get that it's a TV show but if it's based on real life then why wasn't she reported to child services? Maybe things work differently in the US but the police would be checking her hard drive in the UK. She's actually putting me off watching the rest. She messes up every single episode but does the same stuff in the next. It's just weird imo

I too am from the uk and although it's a while since I watched the earlier seasons, I can't think of a single time when "the police would be checking her hard drive" (not that they had hard drives in the 80s). Can you give some examples?

Don’t watch, it was the 80s, parents were allowed to parent

Parenting is not mollycoddling your kids and leaving them with no life skills. Constantly showing up at your school etc is borderline child abuse imo and if my parents had done that, they would have been asked a few questions by the social work dept. Kids need discipline and I don't know how it all ends up with this TV series, other than Adam obviously made a show about it, but if it carries on in the same vein then I'm assuming these kids will grow up and not be able to live in the real world. if your kids are still that clingy when they are at high school then you have failed as a parent and something has gone very wrong

She is a character on a tv show. Love or hate her, it based very loosely on the real mother. The kids seem to be doing just fine.

And the show jumps and goes on for too long, the first 3 or 4 seasons are worth it.

It is extremely dramatized. The real Beverly might be slightly overbearing (Call me when u get there, When u go away to college, if I don't hear from u for days,

Sorry -posted before I could finish but anyway, it seems as though the real Beverly was just a typical doting, possibly slightly overbearing mom. Her kids all grew up seemingly well-adjusted and successful. Barry became a Doctor (the real Murray was also a Doctor, NOT a furniture salesman like he is in the show), Adam grew up to get into film/television/writing/producing/directing and there is no real "Erica", there's another son named Eric- not sure what he does.

I guess you didn't grow up in the 80s

was born in the 80's actually and I don't know of any parents that mollycoddled their kids the way Beverly does. I would have told my mum to F off in the first 3 eps. End of series. No child is going to put up with the shite Beverly does. Was probably over exaggerated for comedic effect but 2 series in and the same thing happening over and over again is just plain boring

She is loosely based off of the real Beverly, but the character is way more extreme in the show for entertainment purposes

It's crazy how some people cannot separate reality from television. It's for entertainment purposes and they assume you have a grasp on it not being real life. I realize UK humor is different but it's not so different the average Brit wouldn't understand it's not an exact mirror of real life. OP is just special.

Oh hun…. This was the 80s, CPS and taking kids away was next to non existent. You had to beat the fuck out of your child or severely neglect them in order for government to get involved.
Bev is quintessential 80s hover mom. But any kid would so lucky to have a mom dote on them the way Bev did her children.

i have no idea, but i guess the smother trope has been around since sitcoms have existed.
3
u/Zealousideal_Lack213 Jul 28 '25
I get smothering your kids but she does the same thing every single episode. Even the kids storylines are the same. Screw each other over and then apologise at the end of the ep, only to do the same thing again in the next. It's boring af

that's just television for ya, stickin' to the formula and hoping you don't get cancelled.

Keep in mind... it's set in the 80s... a much different time than today

Yeah even now it’s not the same, there is not enough resources, parents can beat their kids and them not get taken away.

I can’t tell if you’re being literal. She annoyed the heck outta me. Yes it all comes from love but she takes it way too far, then actually listens to her kids and husband, ‘learns her lesson’, then does it again next episode. So frustrating. Though i’ll admit she doesn’t get enough love from her husband, that’s a little bit of the problem (but she shoulda known that going in). But anyways if you’re being literal, none of that is at all enough to get arrested. Im it’s not enough in the UK or anywhere in the world. Perhaps I’m misremembering, if you have any specific examples of her doing arrest-worthy things for child abuse or child neglectment, lemme know

Can you explain what exactly you’re referring to? Especially by “check her hard drive” ? You keep repeating that you don’t like the way the episodes are set up, that doesn’t explain why you think her kids should be taken away? That makes no sense. She does everything for her kids?
2
u/Ralphisinthehouse Jul 28 '25
Why? Because she is doing things from a place of love not a place of hate. Making a mistake when trying to help is not child abuse even in our woke 2020's world.
I live in he UK and I didn't see her do anyhing I thought child services would be interested in.

Its the same shite every episode though. Kids try and do something, mum gets involved, episode ends with everyone apologising. 10 series? Seriously? Yawn
3
u/Ralphisinthehouse Jul 28 '25
You could stop watching it? Bit radical though

I have stopped watching. Probably one of the worst comedy series I have ever seen

Wait til you see the episode where Bill spears Brett

u/Zealousideal_Lack213 Jul 28 '25
Have given up on the show. Seems to be the same thing every episode. Mum does something to irritate kids, kids do something to irritate each other, everyone apologises, same thing happens in next ep. Don't get the hype at all

u/Positive_Worker_3467 18d ago
all kids are irritatied at times by their parents and siblings at times especially when their teenagers
2
u/Mermaid_Glitter1984 Jul 28 '25
When Bill spears Brett? Sorry -I'm confused.
1
u/EBody480 Jul 28 '25
Yeah when Bill Goldberg kicked Bret Hart and ended his career.
It wasn’t covered on the show itself.

Following on from this, I went to series 9 to see what was different. I then come across the ep where she is wearing a wedding dress and then goes in a huff because Jeff asks her to step back.
I now no longer think she is using emotional abuse.......She's actually mentally ill

u/TheFanumMenace Jul 28 '25
she’s overbearing and manipulative not beating and starving her children… geez the first instinct is always to get the government to save the day isn’t it
