Is it worth sticking with the anime?
I've recently finished the first season and haven't read the Manga, I've heard the anime falls off from season 2 onwards so just wondering if it's decent enough to stick with as a casual viewer or if it's so bad I should just drop it and move on?

If you can, just pick the manga up from there. Although i would suggest to start over with the manga as some events are changed (yes, even in season 1) and in the manga you can get the whole vision the autor had

Here is a general gist of every season of the anime compared to the manga:
Season 1 switches some things around.
Season 2 doesn't follow the manga and tells it's own original non-canon story, though it does depict some alternative versions of canon events.
Season 3 ignores Season 2 and goes back to adapting the manga with no explanations for anyone who hasn't read the manga. In particular it adapts the first quarter of the :re manga.
Season 4 attempts to adapt the remaining 3/4 of :re. That's 100+ chapters squeezed into just 12 episodes. Naturally it leads to the most butchered season that still actually follows the manga.
Just read the manga.

I’d recommend you to read the manga from the beginning, if you don’t want to, then continue the manga after the first season which is chapter 60 if I’m not wrong. If you still don’t want to read from that on, then look for a summary maybe in a fandom or a forum so when you start season 3 you could understand what’s going on. But it’s WAY better to just read the manga, it’s totally worth it

The only thing that is worth sticking up with the Anime version is the music. Go back to Chapter 1 of the manga, and get used to the OST of the series, there is a playlist in Spotify, it's wonderful. Even s01 is chopped and rushed.

Here you know yourself, if many did not like the second season, it does not mean that you should not watch it. You know yourself.

No. The anime is just a bad adaptation all around. Even in S1, though it only gets worse from there. S2 follows a completely different story than the manga, S3 goes back to the manga and is fine on its own, but then S4 goes back and ruins the manga again with horrible pacing and a lot of things cut out.

Season 1 though not a great adaptation is a fun show, however, restart and read the manga if you want the best experience. It makes so much more sense in manga and is basically a different story from the end of season one onwards.

the manga and anime are like two seperate stories entirely considering how many changes they made. just read the manga, honestly. i thought it wouldn't be that different bc everybody said "the manga is so much better" around the time it came out, until i actually read it years later. and wow. it really was so much better lmao

It takes a lot for me to say that an anime viewer should switch to manga when they've already seen a full season of a show, but Tokyo Ghoul is one of those rare cases where the manga is a masterpiece while the anime is extremely mid.
I personally enjoyed the third season the most, but the general consensus is that the show peaks in the first season and gets significantly worse each season. The first season is the only one which is viewed fondly by manga readers, and even then, it has some serious issues and isn't half as good as the manga.

I watched the anime a few years ago, and thought it was mid. But then I read the manga.. they fumbled it so much 😕 if you got the ability to read the manga, read the manga. Don't keep going on with the anime. I tried to rewatch it after I finished it before I read re, and I couldn't stand it even more. It's sad cause I love the manga, it's probably one of my favorites.

As a casual viewer, you should stick with the anime.
You might like it or you might hate it, but it's not that much of a time sink compared to reading the manga.
The manga is better, but the anime, as flawed as it is, is worth eatching, especially as a casual.
