What are your thoughts on a person creating their own anime?

(Note: I'm not Japanese nor from Japan just like the style and all the stories told and shown in many different series)

I think it's really cool, but creating an entire animated work by your self is a massive undertaking.

Worked out for Makoto Shinkai

Would you still consider it an anime even if it wasn't created by a Japanese person I japan?

I feel like it has to be at least tangently connected to Japan to be called an anime but it doesn't really matter at the end of the day. Just make something first and worry about labels later

Absolutely not. But there's nothing wrong with making animation that's not anime.

If this is your worry, then don't bother through the years of development or thousands of dollars of production.

Because there will be people who accept it as an anime, and also those who refuse to call it an anime, like the netflix castlevania is a great example. And it is not classified as an anime on wikipedia either, it's anime inspired. some call it the castlevania anime, some dont.

edit: AND DO NOT USE AI OR YOU WILL GET DRAGGED HARD BY THE ENTIRE INTERNET 😭😂

Differs from person to person. I think general consensus is it isn't true 'japanese anime', but people might call it [insert name of country here] anime.

RWBY and Avatar: The Last Airbender are the best examples of this.

Why are you hung up on the specifics of it being called an anime? Just make an animation inspired by anime if that's what you really want to do. The details don't matter as long as you're happy with what you make.

Literally it won’t be an anime if you are not Japanese or from there. Just make animations and stop being weird about it

What would qualify it to be an anime if it was not made in Japan or by someone from Japan?

If you’re not a Japanese producer in japan then no it’s not an anime. Anime is just cartoons made in Japan. If your cartoon isn’t made in Japan…it’s not anime.

And miss me with the “but anime is Japanese for cartoon” stuff. We say “American anime” and “Australian anime” etc when talking about cartoons made in other countries. When speaking in Japanese. If you’re speaking English it’s a cartoon. Just embrace it.

If you’re an American remaking a French art film, you aren’t making a French art film. You’re making an American movie. Same concept. Doesn’t matter what you homage or copy or take inspiration from.

It happens.

Whether or not it's considered "anime" is gonna be up to the audience (and usually whether or not it succeeds) though.

Personally I wouldn't consider it anime but I'm just strict. I'm always behind any type of creative project though, it's a risk but I hope you push forward.

I’d consider it the way sparkling wine is only champagne if it comes from the champagne region of France.id worry less about how others think about it and more how you feel about it and what are you learning about things like story telling and character development

Makoto Shinkai did it

Personally that sounds like a great idea but I would consider it to be an anime imo cuz it wasn’t made in Japan. It would perhaps be an animation that was inspired by anime or smth imo.

Do it, there will be always someone who will say that's not anime, but you should only worry about what are you doing and not about what others say.

PS: Don't use AI!

Solo, it's virtual impossible however woth the advent of AI, I believe it will become far more feasible but still rather difficult

The fuck do you mean impossible? The likes of Vapor Trail, Kuttsukiboshi, Cencoroll, etc exist and are the works of a single animator.

Also, aside from fully solo projects, there's no shortage of animated pilots and indie projects made by small teams.

i’m assuming they mean not only the animation but literally everything (voice acting, sound, music etc), and have enough length to create a good story. of course it’s not impossible, but it would be a miracle if one person could keep everything to a good level of quality.

Sound is easy as there's no shortage of available SFX libraries. For music it depends on how much you want to commit. Again, lots of royalty free stuff available, but you can't guarantee it'll match well with your animation. You can also just be very minimal on soundtrack usage and throw something together in FLStudio where it's crucial to have.

For voice acting, just get a mic and a few friends who are willing to help you. Doesn't matter if the end result is a bit jank. It has character. Hell, Vapor Trail and its sequel Penetrate Blue are extremely jank when it comes to audio, but they're cool.

E: and of course commissioning people for both soundtracks and VA work if you have a bit of money to spare is an option
