I have less faith that USL D1 is going to work well than I do in MLS which is a pretty low bar.

Yep. I’ll believe it when I see it. Right now it either requires PLS changes or every team in USL C that qualifies by population needs to go up (they won’t) and have stadium upgrades (again no) and that’s STILL not enough so they need new markets.

Whatever, just don't join USL Prem just to leave soon after

Question, why are people against USL Prem and the project they have with relegation/promotion? Isn’t that why US Soccer always gets shit on? Because of the lack of competition in the MLS due to the lack of Relegation/promotion, and allowing teams to pay their way into the league?

Hasn’t USL taken measures to make it very difficult for clubs to leave any more?

Won't stop Sac from leaving at any chance they get. The league will try and stabilize D1. If they let Sacramento in ,it has the potential to cause disruption once they leave for MLS

I gotta think Wilton Rancheria sees franchise prices for MLS to be on a bubble and will tread carefully in stumping up $500M for a piece of paper that entitles you to play soccer.
Fair play for Garbs to get these franchise extortion fees for the current owners, but the good times will not go on forever and paying that for a franchise now is just tossing money down a hole.

Next fees will be $750 to $900m. The collective ownership will not dilute their revenue easily.

I expected a stupid post when I saw the flair but you managed to exceed my expectations.
Franchise values for major American sports teams have never gone down, ever. Especially not when revenue continues to rise by double digits year-over-year.
I don't know what's dumber. Your post or the fact that 4 imbeciles upvoted it.

Also I am a late arrival to the Cosmos bandwagon so I haven’t earned the spurs you’ve assigned me. Give me some time; I’ll be as dumb as the next guy, I promise.

Don’t hold back. Let me know how you really feel. 🤣
MLS ain’t NFL, MLB, NBA or NHL yet. Let’s not look at a trend line and just extend it forever rightward. Soccer isn’t like those other sports—I’ll let you ponder how.

You’re not going to find a receptive audience in this subreddit, even if it involves bashing Cosmos. MLS is the devil and can’t ever been seen in a positive light.

If Republic do leave the USL to go to the MLS, I WILL be insufferable about calling them sellouts

But they've been trying to join MLS since their creation. No one should be surprised. The only reason they're still in USL is because of the Pandemic.

Well that and their main investor bailing.

Which was because of the Pandemic causing Burkle cold feet plus MLS not making him sign the dotted lines before all the public announcements and ceremonies.....

We should give Ron Burkle some grace, when he bailed from Sac and stopped the MLS transition. Yes, the pandemic may have been a factor. But probably more so, was that his soccer-loving son committed suicide or drug OD'd (probably doesn't matter which). His continuing involvement in soccer would have been a painful daily reminder of the loss of his son....

Sacramento Republic had MLS ambitions for as long as I’ve known about them. This news is not shocking. Personally, I feel they will do USL a favor if they, and other MLS ambitious clubs, leave the USL before the formation of the new first division league so that USL’s growth will not be stunted by clubs who want nothing to do with the league long term eventually leaving at a horrible time.
USL D1 will be going through a lot of growing pains and I have no doubts MLS will use their influence within CONCACAF to keep USL D1 teams from having a spot in CONCACAF Champions Cup despite it stating in the sanctioning rules that D1 comes with it. That can be changed with them using their influence again.

Sorry to tell you but every ambitious USL club outside maybe Detroit (give it time) wants to be in MLS. Look at the last 10 expansion MLS clubs.

Any news on USL Ozark? We would love to have Ozark representation in the USL League One!

This was an excellent article, analysis. I only quibble with this one statement-
I would argue it appears likely, provided a USL Prem team qualifies via the Champions Cup. The USSF is granting D1 status to another league (USL SL), and it has been stated that they cannot qualify in year 1, meaning, they can in year 2. In India there was a convergence of 2 leagues at the D1 level and one was not eligible for the Asian Cup, but that league was also on its way down to D2 and we are talking 2 different Confederations.
