New Book: The Ultimate Ubuntu Handbook

Shameless plug incoming! I'm thrilled to announce that my first book, "The Ultimate Ubuntu Handbook," is officially in production and will be shipping soon!

As a long-time Ubuntu developer and an enthusiastic member of the open-source community, I've poured my heart and soul into creating a comprehensive guide. It's perfect for anyone looking to get started or level up their Ubuntu skills. We'll cover everything from understanding the Ubuntu release cycle and its impact on stability and support to mastering development workflows.

While this book does cover some familiar ground for Linux users, I've also delved into topics often taken for granted or not fully understood. I've made a special effort to explore these frequently overlooked areas, such as the intricacies of the Ubuntu ecosystem and how to navigate its abundant resources. This book will equip you with a profound understanding of Ubuntu!

A huge thanks to my friend Alan Pope for writing the foreword!

You can pre-order "The Ultimate Ubuntu Handbook" now from Amazon or other retailers: https://books2read.com/b/ultimate-ubuntu-handbook

My Ubuntu 6.06.1 LTS disc. I forgot I had this.

Found in a box at home. This was my first Ubuntu disc, and my gateway to Ubuntu. I'd previously only dabbled in SUSE and Knoppix. I got Ubuntu running on my Athlon XP box in 2006 and have been running it in one way shape or form ever since.

Another new Linux/Ubuntu user joins in... and has a starting question

Post image
93 Upvotes

Hi all!

After a couple of weeks testing on a testing computer I have, I decided that I am jumping to Ubuntu. Iǘe known this Distro since 2003 when I got at a stand a CD box with it as a gift at a computer show while working. And now, seeing how things are going with the internet, software and Windows, I am taking the definitive jump, starting tomorrow I will replicate the test bench Ubuntu to my main computer.
One single question (I have tons but for later) is that I need to use Adobe Acrobat pro as I am a heavy user of not only signing, but forms, editing, moving and exporting/importing pages. SO, is there any alternative or do I have to stick to dual boot so I can use Adobe Acrobat?
Thanks!

solved Output too big for display, help please

Post image

The output is too big for the display and therefore cuts off the edges of the screen. I’ve tried adjusting the resolution without success.

I’m only using a i5-7500 cpu without a gpu on an old Dell Optiplex 3050.

Is it an Ubuntu problem or something in the bios? Thank you.

how to limit cpu power below 20W at startup on ubuntu 20

Upvotes

Background: My lenovo laptop has bad VRM. Whenever my CPU power goes beyond 20W for more than a few seconds, the laptop freezes and will never come back unless I force it to shut down. Most of the time, it couldn't even boot in the system. I have windows and ubuntu installed on two separate ssds. On windows, I get throttlestop to run at startup and throttle CPU power beyong 20W.

Now I want to do the same on ubuntu. What software/packages/script do I need to do it? My ubuntu skill is quite basic.

Thanks in advance for all help.

Please help me understand drivers under Linux.

I recently switched from Windows 10 to Kubuntu 25.04 and have been very happy with it but there are some things I know how to do in Windows but don't really understand in Linux and was hoping if someone could help me better understand.

Drivers is one of them. Ubuntu, just like Windows, has it's own update system build in but in Windows it is pretty common that the drivers aren't the latest and you would simply go to the companies website, download the latest driver exe for your device and install it.

How does this work under Linux?

For example I was looking if there was a more up to date version of the RTL8922AE Wifi driver. Can't find the Linux driver (or any Linux driver) on the Realtek website and the many guides I find on the subject point me to various random, non official, github pages. Even as someone who has mostly used Windows I know installing drivers from unknown sources is a really bad idea.

So where did the current RTL8922AE Realtek driver come from if not directly from Realtek? How do I know it's the latest version? How do I update it if it isn't?

Ubuntu Laptop + MacBook: How to use Wi-Fi for Internet while using USB Ethernet direct connection for Mac to access KVM guest?

Hi everyone,

My networking requirement is a bit complicated, and I’d like to ask if it’s feasible and how I should configure it.

My requirements:

  1. Wi-Fi:
  • Both the Ubuntu laptop and the MacBook connect to the router via their own Wi-Fi, used only for Internet access.
  • Wi-Fi is not used for direct communication between the two devices.
  1. USB Ethernet direct connection:
  • Both the Ubuntu laptop and the MacBook have an external USB Ethernet adapter, and the two machines are directly connected via a cable.
  • I want to use static IPs on this link:

    • MacBook: 192.168.33.3, netmask: 255.255.255.0
    • Ubuntu host: 192.168.33.4
    • KVM guest inside Ubuntu: 192.168.33.5

What I want to achieve:

  • MacBook can directly access the Ubuntu host via 192.168.33.4.
  • MacBook can directly access the KVM guest via 192.168.33.5.
  • Wi-Fi is still used for Internet access only, not for internal communication.

My questions:

  • On Ubuntu, can I use a bridge (only bridging the USB Ethernet adapter + the VM’s virtual NIC), while keeping Wi-Fi dedicated to Internet access?
  • How should I configure this in Netplan or NetworkManager to ensure the topology works stably?
  • Do I need extra routing or firewall settings?

Thanks a lot for your help! 🙏

Flatpak issues

New to Ubuntu, having trouble with some flatpaks. Wanted a stable setup for my son, put Ubuntu lts on his desktop today. Installed flatpak, and added discord, spotify, steam, and sober.

Everything works great except for sober.

Will only open via terminal flatpak run org.vinegarhq.Sober

If I click the icon it does nothing.

Went into flat seal and turned on every permission I could think of no change.

Removed and installed sober a few times no change restarted PC a few times no change, tried upgrading fkatpak and sober.

Un able to find any documentation specific to my problem.

I have experience with fedora, suse, arch. I dont know much about Deb based distro's so any help is appreciated. Should I stick to .deb And snaps on Ubuntu?

Does Ubuntu support Intep Arc A280 GPU

This gpu was the worst buy for me till date. I thought looking at it's specs that it could handle low level video editing and running SLM on local machine.

But nothing good came out of it. The GPU does not supports dual display on ubuntu or windows. Been trying to use hdmi port and DP port.

Troubleshooting done since the last 6months: - kernal updated - drivers updated - tried gnome, xfce - various fixes in ubuntu

but nothing works. Then installed windows and checked it. but it doesn't work there as well.

Is there something I am missing. I have checked lot of reddit posts, substack, ubuntu help but nothing works.

I'm stuck on 1024x768 and my second monitor isn't being recognised...

This problem started on a random boot-up one day and hasn't gone back since, it's been like this for 2 weeks now and I can't find any solutions.. I have the most recent nvidia driver downloaded (580) and don't have any hardware issues, I've checked all hardware related stuff possible. I'm also running the most recent xanmod kernel, not the default one.

Just downloaded Ubuntu, need help in fixing a few issues

  • The copy and paste doesn't seem to work with many things. I mean, if I select a text and right click on it then choose the copy option, then it works OK. But if I just press Ctrl + C and then wanna paste it somewhere with Ctrl + V, it doesn't work. And also I am looking for a Windows style clipboard manager that has a shortcut to open it too (like Super + V in windows). I have tried CopyQ and Diodon, but it doesn't solve the copy paste issue. This issue has been resolved.
  • I am looking to customize my touchpad gestures as two fingers swipe to 'go back' isn't working in browsers (Brave). Also I, previously (in windows), customized three-finger swipe to 'go back' in any app I am in, I would be really glad if I can get that back.
  • I have installed 'dash-to-dock' and it isn't getting transparent. It still shows the blurred-background of my wallpaper (my wallpaper is red so dash to dock works fine on desktop, but when I open a window and let's say it is in green and if I summon the dock then it's color would still be red instead of green), I want it to be at least semi-translucent. I have tried tweaking it in its settings (Settings > Appearance)

It may seem nit-picky but I am just tryna find a solution.

Random Reboots

My 24.04.3 version will randomly reboot for no reason. It could be idle or working, I cannot pinpoint one common thing that could be causing this.

Would the log files be able to show anything causing this? If so, what would I need to share for review?

[Help] Problems with systemctl reboot on Dell Poweredge T440

Hey everyone,

I'm running out of resources online, I have Ubuntu Server 24.04.3 LTS installed on a Dell Poweredege T440.

I am having trouble with the reboot command sudo systemctl reboot

Ubuntu will shutdown seemingly fine, but it stays powered on and hangs on a black screen. No combination of keys wake it or show any status or information.

Weirdly, sudo systemctl poweroff works as expected, and the system shuts down and powers off gracefully.

I have tried editing the grub configuration to includeacpi=force apm=power_off to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT,But this did not help either.

Anyone have any remaining ideas? Why shutdown works but reboot does not? I need to be able to reboot the system.....

Using journalctl - r, I see no obvious errors

are there any reliable Wifi 7 motherboards for ubuntu at this point?

i'm at the very beginning of piecing together a new desktop. ideally the motherboard would have wifi 7. wifi 7 is not an absolute need, but it seems to be in the wild enough so why not go there for a new system. the old wifi in the house is ready for an upgrade as well. a slight lean to AMD over Intel, but again not a big to me either way.

motherboards have generally been my hardest decision point for any build so this isn't helping. my early searches turn up a handful of suggestions, as opposed to anything/everything just works, making me think this combo might not be ready for prime time quite yet.

Compatibility of device

What is the hardware compatibility of Acer Aspire 7(i5 13th gen, RTX 3050,6 GB Vram, 144 Hz, 512 GB SSD) with Ubuntu Linux and what should be the Bluetooth version of headphones I should use for a better experience? Will Ubuntu run properly on my device? What issues can I face with it?
