Hi, I'm a new ubuntu user. I started using because my hp probook 4510s can't handle anything over windows 8. So i installed xubuntu 22.04. but i keep eyeing the latest update. I'm scared my shit pc cannot handle it.

If you know any other thing i can use to enhance my experience please let me know.

First step in a terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

Then back in the DE look for the software update tool. It may offer any pending version upgrades which may include additional software.

So straight to the latest version

Stay on 22.04 LTS. No reason to risk broken kernels during the upgrade to 24.04.

Right? I don't want unnecessary risk.

Firstly I'd boot live media (of 24.04) and see how it works on your actual hardware yourself... That will be your best bet.

I have a device here running Lubuntu 22.04 myself, and that device is using the GA kernel as I'm unhappy with it when using the HWE kernel; which is a key indicator that I'd not like it on 24.04 LTS using the GA kernel (22.04's HWE kernel is backported from 24.04!). You don't specify what kernel stack you're using as Xubuntu have released 6 22.04 ISOs, 2 using the GA kernel & 4 using HWE, so I won't know which you installed (Xubuntu like all flavors follows the Ubuntu standard in regards ISOs for LTS & kernel stack; and its that of Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Desktop & earlier).

I'd explore what kernel stack you're using; and if it's HWE I'd expect you'll be fine on 24.04 using the GA kernel, but you can live test HWE kernels for clues as to HWE kernel stacks. Xubuntu 24.04 LTS currently have released 4 ISOs, 2 with GA & 2 with HWE; the HWE kernels being 6.11 & 6.14, the GA was 6.8.

FYI: You can use uname -r to get details of what kernel is running, if you're using HWE I'd expect the result to be 6.8.(rest of detail isn't of interest here), where if you're using the GA kernel stack you'll see 5.15.(etc). Whilst there are other results (esp. if using an OEM kernel), they are unlikely.

What is it about the newer version that you're after?

If you like bleeding edge, maybe LTS is not for you, you can go with something like Arch or Fedora.

Personally for me, I like stability and that's why I stay with LTS.
