Incorporating Speed Walking into Training

Are you incorporating speed walking into your long runs? If so, is it solely terrain-based, or do you use planned walking intervals for an intentionally distributed workload to reduce muscle fatigue, prevent cardiac drift, and mentally break up very long runs? What is your technique?

Race Supergluing blisters?

Context - in an old Andrew Skurka Q&A (warning - feet) about thruhiking he said he treated his blisters by lancing them, putting super glue inside the blister, then pushing the excess glue out, and taping it shut. Apparently he found it effective.

My question is, has anyone done this in an ultra context? I can't tell if it's a completely crazy idea. It can't possibly be healthy to put that stuff inside an open wound. However if it works I imagine it could be invaluable during longer races, being a more durable fix than just taping.

I'm lucky that I hardly ever get blisters, but I do constantly live in fear that I'm due for a big one and want to be prepared when it comes

Training flat 100 miler advice

I am training for a flat 100-miler and was wondering if anyone has experience with flat ultras.

The longest flat race I’ve done was a 50K, but I’ve completed trail distances up to 100K, podiuming a few of them.

I’m curious how to best train for this. Right now I’m running 100–110 MPW with back-to-back 20–24 mile long runs (the first one flat with some speed, the second on trails). I also do 1 speed workouts per week with lots of strides. Any suggestions? Thank you!

EDIT: I’m also strength training 2x a week

Put my money where my mouth is

Welp, I've been saying for over a year i wanted to run an offical ultra marathon. Ive done an unoffical one back in september last year with little to no training. Was still an avid endurance runner, but never ran anywhere past 26 miles. That was until i managed to do over 40 one day and it conviced me i needed to actually achive my dream of a 100 mile race.

So Ive finnaly put my hat in the ring of a race, on a route i learned how to do endurance running. Its going to be such a meaninful thing to achive and i want to get a tattoo if i finish.

I got less than 7 months to prep, wish me luck and to those who are attending, ill see you on race day.

I only follow one Safisfy athlete on instagram and I’ve noticed she almost NEVER wears satisfy shoes

Do you think Satisfy knows their shoes are overpriced junk and tell their athletes “eh, don’t worry about using them for real, just sell em to rich tools on instagram”? I know North Face used to tell their athletes they didn’t have to actually use north face shoes but that was back in the mid 2000’s before the vectiv line.

Flying after 100 miler

Running Superior 100 in 1.5 weeks, and unfortunately have to travel for work on Monday morning after the race. I do have an aisle exit row seat. Then Tuesday and Wednesday all-day meetings - I'll stand up when I can but probably a lot of sitting.

Any tips for flying 2 days after a 100? And for being confined to a conference room?

To those who’ve done multiday races: what was your experience level going into your first one?

Would love to hear what your race/running history was going in, and the unique challenges of the 200+ mile distance.

The Buckeye 200 has been lingering in the back of my mind for a couple years now. It seems that 2026 may be the last year that it takes place. I would ideally like to get a couple more 100s under my belt and a bit more physical hardiness, but knowing the race may be no more is making me want to send it. But it seems like the perfect gateway: flat as a pancake and already well-established.

I have some experience, but it doesn’t feel like a lot. Two 100s (a third coming up in Sept.), 100k, a couple 50 miles, and a couple 24-hours.

I’d love to hear some of your experiences, words of wisdom, and realistic takes on the multiday experience.

Are painkillers beneficial while running? Do you take them before or during a race? What ingredients and brands do I look out for? Looking for both us and eu brands.

How to use Gatorade in a long ultra?

I'm doing a 100 miler and the aid stations will have Gatorade and water. I was going to add my Skratch sugar-free electrolyte powder to the Gatorade to get those extra electrolytes that gatorade lacks. Does anyone else use this strategy? Has it worked for you? Or do you have another strategy for using Gatorade on a long ultra?

The race is ~17mile laps so I was going to start each lap with 2L of Tailwind, and then use Gatorade more as I get further into the lap. I sweat a lot and drink a lot of fluids, so there will be quite a bit of non-tailwind consumed during the laps. I don't want to carry Tailwind powder with me because it's big and annoying to pour. I was just going to put little scoops of the Skratch into my soft flasks before each lap and then add gatorade on top. (I am not crewed for the race.)

Oregon Cascades 100

Well the OC100 got canceled mid-race yesterday due to a fire getting too close near the finish. Huge bummer but safety is definitely more important and the AQI in Sisters was definitely pretty terrible. I do think Alpine Running could have done a better job with communication and overall race organization though. They ran out of ice at multiple aid stations (on a 100 degree heat day) and also ran out of hot food options at the last aid station before the night section (only broth remaining). In addition, we ran into a sweeper after we got off the course that wasn’t heading out until 11pm to notify runners of the cancelation (2hrs after they sent an email). Very little communication on their part and they should have had a better plan in place to get runners off the course, especially given how prevalent the fire danger was and is every year. AQI was over 200 for several hours before they announced the cancelation and started packing up aid stations. Some runners found out by rolling into the aid station to see it shut down then had to turn around. Disappointing to have such poor protocols in place and poor aid stations stocking.

I don’t really want this training block to go to waste and feel like I have unfinished business with this distance so I’m debating on signing up for the Pine to Palm 100 in a few weeks. Any tips if anyone has done this race or had a similar experience with a race cancelation and had to pivot to something else soon after would be appreciated!

Hello, has anyone experience with running with belt flashlight?

Mostly instructed on how usable it is, and if it is bouncing of the beam very noticeable or disturbing.

For example something like this:

Cramping

I’ve ran 3 ultra marathons now and every I get over 50k I seem to cramp up in my calf’s and groin area. Ive not DNF yet. I’m a big sweater so I take plenty of stronger electrolytes and have salted nuts as snacks while I ran but nothing stops the cramps. Any advice on how to prevent would be great. Thanks

Teanaway 100

Has anyone here done this as their first 100 miler? It’s pretty meaty at 31k of vert, mostly single track.

I’ve had a decent run of training, did 2 fifty milers this summer, and am debating throwing a Hail Mary for this one.

Races with generous cut off

Does anyone else keep signing up for the same race over and over again?

Currently searching for my next race, and I’m always drawn to the same few races. For me (located in SF Bay Area), it’s always the Mt Tam and Marin Headlands runs. There’s so many beautiful trails out there, but I just feel so emotionally attached to that region. Trying to branch out, but my heart says no.

Training What’s the biggest mental hurdle you’ve faced in an ultra, and how did you push through?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how much of ultrarunning comes down to mindset rather than just training. For me, the hardest moment wasn’t the physical pain, but when my brain started convincing me I couldn’t go on. I’d love to hear your stories, whether it was a low point at mile 70, battling sleep deprivation, or just finding the motivation to get back out for another loop.

How did you flip the switch and keep moving forward when everything in your head was telling you to stop?

Training Long Run Questiob

Total opinion question and mostly just curious. For your long runs, do you primarily focus on time or distance? I.E hitting 4 hours of running or 20 miles?

Happy running 😊

Edit: yes, I notice the typo in the title and it won’t let me fix it. English major having a minor panic attack. Don’t let my typing error dwindle my credibility 😂

Bloated. Distended. Dehydrated?

Yesterday I ran my first Ultra. About 2.5 hours in, I began to notice the water and tailwind I was consuming was just sloshing around in my stomach. It got to the point where it was too uncomfortable to run, making me feel sick, and I ended up walking nearly the entire race. At 6’3”, 240lbs, I’m a big sweaty guy and it was hot out so I planned for a lot of fluid intake- I was taking in about 3L every 3.5 hours. 1L tailwind to 2.5L water. Basically drinking, re-filling, and drinking three flasks for each of the 3 legs of the race. Mid race(or a bit sooner) I stopped sweating. I urinated only once, about 1.5 hours in (and not again until about 12 or 13 hours later). My mouth was so dry that I couldn’t chew and swallow or even muck down a gel without adding sips of water and adding to the sloshing in my stomach. During the Last leg of the race, I started getting desperate and taking salt capsules like candy- I think it helped a tiny bit. With less than 9k left I tried making myself throw up but my stomach was empty- lots of heaving but nothing came up. About an hour after I was done running, I had to make a very urgent visit to the bathroom and what seemed like all of the fluid I had consumed was ejected- it stayed in my bowel the whole time I was out. Why? Why did my body not absorb any of the fluid I was putting into it(and presumably the food too)? I came into this race hydrated and in the days leading up to it, I was taking in supplemental electrolytes. I came into this confident I could finish in around 10 hours but instead I barely made the 12 hour cutoff. Black Spur 54k in Kimberly BC. Not sure the exact temp but it was high 20’s C.

Race 100 in the Mountain West with high runnability?

I'm looking for my comeback 100 for next year and hoping to get recommendations with these criteria:

  • race dates: April-June
  • high elevation is a-ok
  • runnable trails is a high priority (chonky stuff like Ouray/Hardrock or slickrock of Moab, not so much)
  • low to medium gain/loss
  • Preferred areas: Utah, southern ID, western CO, northern AZ, California

I've done these and don't (necessarily) need to go back: Buffalo Run & San Diego, tho I enjoyed them both.

Help me diagnose my stomach issues

Last Friday I did my first ultra, a self-organized 50k. Things were going really well until about mile 25. By that point, I had eaten about 300 grams of carbs, which I knew was not enough, but I was doing good on hydration (still sweating and peeing). About 100 of those grams were from tailwind so I thought I was good on electrolytes too.

Then at mile 23 I met a friend who gave me a bunch of grapes, pita chips, a coke, and some peanut M&Ms. At this point I stopped counting carbs but I was probably still behind where I should have been. We ran together after that point, and I felt really good for the next two miles.

Then, I started feeling nauseous. At this point it was also getting hot (near 90F), and the trail was really exposed. I could run for about 5 minutes, then I'd feel nauseous, and have to walk for a bit. I drank a lot of water over the last 10 miles, about 1.5L. I stopped sweating a couple of times so I knew I was behind on hydration for that last stretch. My friend (an ultra veteran) kept giving me some chewable salt tabs. Other than those, tailwind, and a couple of cliff bloks, I didn't eat anything else for those last 8 to 10 miles.

My thinking is that I should have started on the electrolytes earlier when I knew it was going to get hot, drank a bunch more water when I stopped to meet my friend (other than the coke I didn't drink any fluids), and that hopefully that would have helped with nausea so I could have eaten more solid food over the last stretch of the run. Those last 10 miles were mostly downhill and I felt fine, so I know that if it hadn't been for the stomach issues I could have covered that ground a lot faster.

I know more experience is the only way to know for sure, but curious what others think, or other people's experience.

Ultraspire big bronco vest

Does anyone here use this vest with a quiver? The pole straps on the back are burdensome to pull/stow away multiple times per run. Thanks in advance
