Announcement Friday Free for All Weekly thread! General collection/discussion for things that don't fit elsewhere! (ask anything!)

Greetings /r/videoediting!

This thread is 100% for the other stuff you might want to talk about.

A number of other reddits have a free for all thread - where you might find a regular discussion - not specific to a post.

Think of it as a bar with a bunch of friends.

Some suggestions:

  • Strategy on a project you want to talk about how to best promote?
  • Upgrading something and you want opinions?
  • How does your website look?
  • Local/virtual Meetups?
  • Looking for a collaborator (no "I'm a creator and I'm looking for an editor" posts)

Things that shouldn't go here: Feedback/What tool should I use to edit/Which system to buy? There are dedicated threads for this, please use them!

And in this regular Friday thread, while our general rules are still in place (no piracy, be civil, no links w/referrer codes), the following topics relaxed :

  • Great tutorials you found/you created.
  • Trying to do this as a side hustle (although generally, websites like Fiverr mean you'll be shooting for the basement/working for free and we hate that someone would exploit you like that)
  • A great piece of software/hardware/service you found
  • Great free music libraries/media you found.
  • How much to charge? What is your time worth? Estimate 2-3x the time you think it'll take to edit as how much time to quote.

Our mod team is watching this thread and we'll tweak these as they develop!

Tech Support How should I deal with multiple footage sources that a recorded in different fps?

Upvotes

I am making a gaming video but don't know how I should approach the issue of my face cam being 25 fps and the gameplay being 60 fps. Should I edit the video project in the higher fps or the lower fps or should I choose an fps in the middle of the two like 48 fps?

How did they do that? Making it look like it’s dark outside with footage filmed inside a car

Upvotes

Hi, everyone! Yesterday we filmed a video inside of a limo, it’s supposed to be a party. But the thing is suddenly it became very sunny outside so it’s very visible that 1) the car is not moving at all; 2) it’s actually daytime outside (according to the script it’s supposed to be a night party). The party is filmed inside the limo with the windows being on both sides of the shot most of the time.

Anyways, does anyone know how we can fix that in post? Maybe just lower the exposure outside the car? I can work in Davinci Resolve and After Effects.

Tech Support How to "Flatten" and distort an image so it looks like it is on a monitor.

Kind of a wordy title, but I want to make a frame of my video look like it is on the computer screen of the video of the guy punching the the screen while playing the scary maze. I can't add pictures here, but is kind of diagonal and not front facing the camera, so I want to know how to distort the image to fit it (sorry for any incorrect english).
Thanks in advance!

I want to start an YouTube channel in intend to translate english songs to my native language and share them with subtitles bottom of the video with an still image on the background. I have an Premiere Pro 2022 and haven't done any editing before, I tried doing one once when I had CapCut and had to create an text, change font, change font size and change font color then do it everytime I did a text and it was exhausting. Is there any way I can do it more effortlessly? I'd appreciate any tips and helps. Thank you.

How did they do that? How do I recreate this iMessage-style audio bar effect ?

I saw this video where the audio looks like a voice message bubble, and it moves from right to left while a background video plays.

Here’s the clip: [https://www.instagram.com/reel/DNDxD2kyZAx/?igsh=MXQyNWlzbG05OWVyaw==]

I want to make the exact same style for my own singing audio — background video + moving voice message effect.

Could someone explain step-by-step how this was made in CapCut or VN (or if I need another app)?

Workflow How do you manage your editing workflow effectively?

I’ve been curious about how different editors structure their workflow. For an edit like a short reel, how much time do you usually spend from the first import to final export? Do you follow a set process or do you go with the flow depending on the project?

How did they do that? How to enhance the quality of iPhone video

I’m new to the whole filming, editing and content creation side of things and I apologize if this is not the right place for this. I’ve been trying to make videos that have quality/clarity like these videos below.

https://www.instagram.com/share/BAISW8uUGG

https://www.instagram.com/share/_6FLI_DJp

I cannot tell if these videos are achievable on iPhone as I’ve attempted but I feel like mine don’t come close, unless of course these look more likely filmed on an actual camera.

I’ve tried doing some research and have lately been filming using ProRes 4k 30fps as was mentioned in the dozen videos I watched. How much back end editing would need to be done to get that clarity, or does it really come down to solely the equipment used to film in this case. I haven’t attempted it yet as I just saw it before typing this, but I guess Blackmagic (I think that’s what it’s called) camera app is helpful? Any other suggestions would be really appreciated. I just want to put out nice quality videos.

Tech Support Cutting AVI into four parts seems to have lost footage

I have a 1h 12m 19s AVI file that I recorded / captured from my Canon MD101 back in 2008. The file is 12.9 GB.

I have used Avidemux to cut it into quarters, as 12.9 GB is quite a large file.

However, the four new files total 1h 12m 13s.

I do not believe there are any keyframes to worry about, so I am a bit confused.

Any ideas?

If it helps, here is the data from MediaInfo of the original file, and one of the cut files:

Tech Support Long render times on laptop

Ive posted this elsewhere but trying to reach as many as can for help. 🙏 thanks in advanced.

Ok so first of all I made this post about 20-25 days ago. Ive been super busy and using my desktop for most things so I did reply on there today but decided to make a new post just in case.

My issue is I have an i7-13700hx, with a 4080 laptop gpu and 32gigs ddr5 ram in an MSI Vector gp68 he 13v laptop.

When testing renders I'm rendering a 2 hour video with 4k source media down to 1080p on h264. On desktop takes 38 minutes. Laptop is like at 0.9x speed of render so the render time is like a couple minutes longer than the video is...

Ive been trying to figure it out.

Some suggested its thermal throttling but today i finally did some testing with hwinfo and msi after burner and its sitting abiut 20°c cooler (between 62°c and 68°c) than the thermal throttle temps, which according to internet is abiut 87°c.

Ive got it on HW encoding with Nvidia cuda. Rendering on an nvme m.2 internal. Msi settings are set to maximum performance.

Need help please idk whata going on.

(Also for reference my desktop has an 11th gen i7 with 32 gigs ddr4 ram and m.2 nvme.)

Edit: forgot to add this here: My older laptop has an AMD Ryzen 7 6800H. 16gb ddr4, and 2tb ssd with an rtx 3070. It renders this same video in about ~55 minutes.

Tech Support What is this artifact?

https://imgur.com/a/Bk0FJ5e

I am new to video and was wondering what this artifact was... as the person walked from left to right, I observed the top of her head looked lighter, exactly where the bright (but not clipped) sky was. Interestingly, I would expect this artifact to be more visible on the RIGHT side of her head (since she was walking right), but it was more visible on the LEFT side of her head.

Other (requires mod approval) Estimated time to edit 60 hour single camera interview?

I have to film and edit a single-camera, single-mic interview. The raw material will be around 60 minutes. They couldn’t tell me the desired final length, but it seems there won’t be much to cut. I’ll need to handle editing, sound, and color. I’ve never worked on this type of material before (I have experience editing but either doing 10 minutes short films that take a lot of time since there's a lot of creative decisions to be made or 2 minute tiktoks), so I’m not sure how long this particular project will take. I told the client I would have the finished product in two business days (we finish the shooting at 8pm on friday and I usually take the weekend to myself) to leave enough buffer in case of unexpected issues. However, they’re asking me to deliver it the next day, saturday afternoon. That feels like a very short amount of time, doesn’t it?

Other (requires mod approval) Has anyone transitioned from using Kdenlive to DaVinci Resolve?

I am glad I discovered this subreddit. It's been helpful so far.

I am currently using Kdenlive. Recently, I have started noticing some bugs - it quits unexpectedly many times after render is done but final output is still created. Sometimes simple effects take a long time and I have to often watch 3-5 youtube videos to learn them. The Kdenlive community on Reddit is actually very helpful but I have noticed many people have similar complaints.

Having said that, I have managed to create many videos and even publish them. It has not caused trouble so far. But in the last few videos, especially after their recent update, I have to spend more time debugging than working. Also, I want to improve quality of my video edits.

So my question to people who have transitioned from Kdenlive to DaVinci Resolve:

- Is DaVinci Resolve comparatively better product?

- Do you think overall it performs better than Kdenlive when it comes to editing and rendering experience? eg - fewer crashes, readily available effects.

- If the experience is relatively same, would you recommend me to stay with Kdenlive?

Of course, I understand everyone has individual preferences but I am interested in just personal opinions for now. It might help me a little.
