Anne thinks of herself as not a righteous believer before her village is murdered. She thinks God will punish her for her sins. But when she survived, she is given sufficient evidence for herself to seduce that it was an act of God that allows her to continue living. She gains faith because God helped someone who he should've been punished, she saw his mercy.

Canute on the other hand has lived as a believer, pious in his prayer. Yet for some reason God never listened to him. Ragnar's death was the final straw, he was shown evidence that either God didn't exist or was someone unworthy of worship. He lost his faith because God didn't punish just the sinners, but also the believers, the people just trying to live their lives.
