These get asked all the time around here, and plenty of our more experienced community members give graciously detailed answers very frequently. There’s a lot of wisdom to find here if you’re just getting started! Before you post your question, use the search bar and see if others have asked the same thing—they probably have!

PAID work Casting for the lead voice for Moxie Monroe audio drama series

Post image
23 Upvotes

Hello! I'm casting for my lead character Moxie Monroe in my podcast narrative series MOXIE MONROE: PRIVATE EYE. This podcast series is inspired by old 50s detective radio shows like Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, and fantasy storytelling games like Dungeons and Dragons. Its going to be a ten episode first season, with each episode being a different mystery set within a fantasy/noir city.

Moxie sides for the audition. Please send a video with you reading (no memorization required) the sides to [moxiemonroepodcast@gmail.com](mailto:moxiemonroepodcast@gmail.com) by Sep 21st. Moxie is a mix of a classic film noir femme fatale and the private eye trope. Consider (but not required) the Mid-atlantic/transatlantic accent for her or your own twist.

$400 for the pilot episode, and the same for each episode afterwards (or more if we get an increased budget).

Advice Has anyone ever worked with a company called ATech?

I did 7 videos for this company and sent them an invoice as we had agreed upon. However it's been some time and they still haven't paid. They've only published 2 of the 7 videos we did. Has anyone else ever worked with this company? I know I probably got scammed and just need to learn from this, but wondering others experience with a similar situation.

Microphones Choosing microphone for voice acting and dubbing, now I have copy of U87

hello there! I’m a voice actor of fundab. I’m looking for new microphone. Now I have Aikman U87 Vintage (Neman 87 ai copy with -3db pad on high. Sound is so rubbish, mids hearing like telephone. When I’m cut lows and highs, signal is so bad. I’m already test tlm102 and soni c80. Tlm102 is good, but I think I can get more for 800$ (in Rus). c80 is overbright. I think I can get a good mix sound, but for monitoring it’s unreal. I can’t get a real sound of my voice (I had a wide range of voice, with many obertones.). There are the following models that interested me, but which I can’t listen on my voice: Austria audio oc16, at4040, Twin87. Open to your suggestions.

More of my microphone: blurred mids, body reverb at 150hz. Mids are so like radio. O think Neumann have more “cinema” mids.

I’m looking for good microphone, which can take all my voice range with obertones, not linear freq response, but close to it. Without overbright (like c80, I really liked his mids and low, but it’s too bright)

Discussion Radio?

I recently spoke with my high school drama teacher about pursuing voice acting more seriously. He recommended a local radio station that often hires people my age, and he personally knows the owner. Do you think gaining radio experience would add to my credibility as a voice actor? Has anyone here found radio work helpful in advancing their career? Would this be a good use of time?

Would it be appropriate to incorporate my voice acting work into my current acting website, or should I create a separate website to keep camera acting separate from voice acting?

Discussion Are British voice actors desirable?

And I mean for things that span beyond medieval portrayal.
I want to begin a career in voice acting, and like everyone's goal, to be a success.
However I've noticed that a lot of successful shows/dubs are American and contain mostly American accents. Which to me, seems that American accents are more desired when casting.

Does this mean I should teach myself and practice an American accent to make it?

Performance Feedback Voice and Music Editing Feedback

This monologue was done for a TTRPG home game. I got permission from the person I filled the script for to post the audio on socials and decided it felt a little strange to post just my voice outside of a demo or submission. The music was added by me and I edited my voice recording so that certain lines would start and end on certain beats of the song so the two audios would flow more naturally together. I would love feedback of any kind understanding that this is for me to grow and learn for future recordings, so no need to hold back!

Was adding music a good call or does it come off as clutter if the subject of discussion is my voice acting? Is this something that I should continue to do or does it read as novice? Do I even like the music add or am I just trying to cover up faults in my VO?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can give advice or critiques!!!

Discussion Is voice acting (audiobook narration) a good field to get into?

Hi all,

I'd like to know your opinions on the industry and its health. I'm particularly interested in audiobooks. The reason why I ask is because my former profession, journalism, was NOT particularly good because of declining revenues across the board due to the rise of smartphones and social media. It seems like areas like anime, gaming, and audiobooks are ALL mediums that have grown and are growing. But on the other hand, it seems like there are a lot of aspiring actors and the competition is really fierce, as it is in any performance industry like music or acting. And maybe AI is a threat, though I don't know anyone who'd listen to an AI audiobook...

Yes, I know I should just do it for the passion, economics be damned, but on the other hand it's important for me given my background to get opinions from real people about the industry. I'm very curious about this and would love to hear your perspective.

Demo feedback What more do I need before applying to agencies?

I have been voice acting for almost 2 years and I have a good bit of freelance work under my belt. This includes audiobooks, fan animations, and lots of youtube narration. I have a website and 2 demo reels (1 for commercial and 1 for animation). I'm just nervous about applying because I'm afraid of getting blacklisted from the agencies I apply to (them recognizing me in the future and ignoring my application because they recognize me and remember that they didn't like me). One of my other concerns is that a lot of them want you to have professional experience, which as far as I can tell, what they're looking for is you having done the kind of work that you can only get through an agency. I'm also not sure if my demo reels are good enough. https://soundcloud.com/bryce-rodrigue-7505609/animation-demo-reel?utm_source=clipboard&utm_campaign=wtshare&utm_medium=widget&utm_content=https%253A%252F%252Fsoundcloud.com%252Fbryce-rodrigue-7505609%252Fanimation-demo-reel https://soundcloud.com/bryce-rodrigue-7505609/mastered-commercial-reel?utm_source=clipboard&utm_campaign=wtshare&utm_medium=widget&utm_content=https%253A%252F%252Fsoundcloud.com%252Fbryce-rodrigue-7505609%252Fmastered-commercial-reel

Booth Related My recording just fell off in quality.

I recently recorded a line for a friend, but he wants me to rerecord some lines because I misspronounced a name in them.

No problem, except now when I try to record my audio, it's barely being picked up, and a lot of static is coming up. I didn't mess with the setting at all, nothing happened to my microphone like it falling off. I adjusted the settings to try to fix it, but that only made things worse and so I would put them back to the original.

In fact, while I was typing this out to ask for help, and tried one last time before clicking post, it fixed itself, so I have no idea, but still felt maybe I could ask so that way if this happens again, I will be able to deal with it more quickly.

Advice Appropriate rates?

I'm gonna keep this brief. I'm working on an animated short and this time I need voice actors. I'm not completely sure how much to pay, but here's the basic info.

- It's about 3 minutes long

- 5 voices, 2 females, 3 males

- and each character has around 50-100 words of dialogue in total.

I'm thinking $100 per voice flat rate, but I need second opinions. I'm very new to this.

EDIT: AUDITIONS AREN'T OPEN YET. This isn't an immediate casting call, I'm just getting a frame of reference while in pre-production. I'm still working on the storyboards so if you're interested please hold tight for a while.

Advice Recommended mic for beginners?

My agency sent out an email requesting for voice reels and I’d really like to submit one because I’ve always wanted to get into voice acting, the only issue is that I don’t have a mic specifically catered towards like… clean audio.

I got a little gaming mic attached to a headset and that’s it. So I’m looking to get one but ideally one that’s not like… too expensive?

Any help would be appreciated!

Advice Is it generally ok to use Voice Synthesizers in a project for full creative control?

I want to use Voice Synthesizers such as VOCALOID or UTAU instead of finding voice actors to have full creative control over my creative projects. Is that usually seen as a thing that is ok to do? if not, why?

Advice How Do I Fake Laughter

You would assume there's plenty of advice for this, and there is, but nothing I can find is what I'm looking for. When I look up how to laugh in acting, it's always more general acting advice about how to make yourself feel the emotion, which isn't what I want. I have no trouble making myself laugh, it's just that I have a very strange and unique laugh that wouldn't usually fit most characters. I genuinely do not know how to do a "hahaha hehehe" style laugh, it may be the breath control aspect of it. Doing a typical h sound leaves no air for the rest of the vocals to come out it seems.

Discussion Coaching question

This might be a controversial question and trying to figure out how to ask it. It might not even make sense and I hope some folks can understand what I’m trying to say. If you have been studying with the same coach for a few years and it’s going great but haven’t noticed any big breakthroughs. You trust them but it’s starting to feel like you are becoming a cash cow to them and not progressing. At what point do you cut ties or keep going. I feel like there are some VO coaches that are great salespeople and are pitching hard to keep clients and only see them as $$$.

Advice Has anyone worked with Pangian?

Pangian is another "remote worker" site (think "upwork", etc.). I've been contacted by a Project Manager for a nice sounding gig. No red flags, emails are well constructed, etc. I've been around the block a few times and have seen my share of VO scam jobs and other iffy emails, but this seems legit. It's just so out of the blue, I thought I'd ask around.

I was curious if anyone has any experience or feedback about the company?

PAID work [HIRING] £200-400 Audio Drama

Hi! My name is Enay, and I’m a writer for the SCP Wiki, a music producer, and a trained audio engineer.

I’m looking to hire three male VAs for an audio drama adaptation of an article I’m writing currently. The writing would be finished in 1-2 months time, and full VA work would begin then.

Roles: The themes that will be covered in the article are appreciating the life you get to have, and what our art means in the grand scheme of things. The general tone of the project is lighthearted, with some more serious moments here and there.

Kyrie is a performing artist with a deeply rooted fear of being forgotten, who uses his art as a means of living on past his death. This is the lead role and involves a lot of dramatic and emotional performances, with some genuine vulnerability that he isn't staging. Est. words - 2-3K

Preferred Accents: Transatlantic or Recieved Pronunciation British.

Demi Farron is the doctor in charge of Kyrie, and is a more measured and educated person in comparison. His character is more serious, with more to lose if he fails to meet the expectations set for him. Est. Words - 2-3K

Preferred Accents: Any accent is applicable for this role.

Louis is a fairly typical stern boss. He has the smallest role, with est. 500 words. There isn't much to say outside of a commanding voice being preferred.

Preferred Accents: Spanish or Italian.

Word Count: 7-10K total, including unspoken lines.

These pieces are often very dialogue-heavy, and so depending on your role you would be compensated £200-400 each. This is negotiable as I don’t know exactly how many lines each character has yet, and payment would be through PayPal. No one person would be reading the full 7-10K words, however.

Please keep in mind the final role may be more or less words than stated here, and I am happy to compensate according to any changes made later.

Auditions here!

Advice 1-2-1 In Person Training in London: Speak like Nick Naylor (Thank you for smoking)

Hi

Does anyone know/recommend any voice or speaking mentors in London or towards Romford?

I'd love to hire and work with someone that help me command a room like Nick Naylor from the movie 'Thank You For Smoking'.

I'm accustomed to speaking in front of people. I have the content and the passion. I really need to work on the 'art of storytelling' through my voice.

Must be in person since I don't do very well at online courses when it comes to practical things like this - at least at the start.

Thank you

Advice But what should I be doing today

I decided a week ago to get started in voice acting. I've been reading this sub and watching a lot of YouTube videos trying to separate the worthwhile from the crap. I've ordered some basic equipment, mic and headphones and accessories to be delivered in a few days. (A booth will take a month or so to put together).

What should I be doing TODAY?

Booth Related Getting divorced and having to leave my booth behind... now I need to figure out a budget friendly way to either get a booth or build a booth. Help?

Title says it all really... I converted a room in my old house to my soundbooth, and luckily I have access to it until the end of the month which gives me time to record my demo and the last of my projects I'm working on. However, now I'm staying with family, and they're not super keen on me converting parts of their house to become my booth (especially since this is temporary). I found a portable booth on marketplace for 3500 which is tempting. Before I just take the plunge and buy one from another VO, is there a better alternative?

Sorry if this is long-winded. Just as my career was starting to take off--BOOM life hits lol Now I'm just stir crazy unable to audition or commit to anything until I have a reliable recording booth.

Thanks :)
