I cannot say enough about Governor Pritzker's leadership right now. He is striking the absolute perfect tone. We ARE living through a dangerous period. We DO have the power to stop it. Both are true.
His ability to get out ahead of this bullshit Trump wants to bring to Chicago is just so admirable.
33
u/OptimistNate Wisconsin 2d ago
One thing this Admin is really good at is propping up strong Dem voices.
Mamdani in New York
Troops in LA/Gerrymandering in Texas has really propped up Newsom.
Rhetoric against Chicago, propping up Pritzker
Just to name a few.

u/Meanteenbirder New York 2d ago
Newsom walked so Pritzker could run
25
u/ProudPatriot07 South Carolina- Rural Young Democrat 1d ago
I'm really liking both of them right now and appreciate their leadership. Also hoping this helps Democratic governor candidates in other states in 2025 and 2026 (my state needs to get a Democratic gov. candidate first, hopefully soon).
3
u/Sounder1995-2 Ohio 1d ago
I really don't get why he's so low in the few existing 2028 Dem POTUS primary polls right now. I imagine that it's just 'cause Newsom and Harris have had longer to soak in the spotlight. Plus, they've more memes.
1
u/caligaris_cabinet IL-08 1d ago
You got it. Polls at this stage are name recognition only. Harris, Pete, and Newsom have been in the national spotlight longer than Pritzker. Polls won’t matter much for another two years or more.

Broadcasters told not to air any booing of Donald Trump at US Open men’s final
Anywhere he goes, he deserves to be booed and honestly they broadcasters should do it purely out of spite lmao

If we boo enough eventually he'll be censored from the air altogether.

Good thing CBS will have the only cameras in the building. Would suck for Trump if someone else at the venue had a small camera, like the size of a cell phone.

For those wondering about the DOD renaming, it’s not actually renamed. The order specifically allowed for the use of alternate naming on official documents, PR, announcements, etc.
Possibly bc changing it would require an act of congress?
41
u/Historyguy1 Missouri 2d ago
This is "Gulf of America"-level of stupid.
18
u/Meanteenbirder New York 2d ago
I have legit just seen one thing in the wild referencing it (an ad for one of the oil companies). Might be a bit harder to do with this since most people just call it the Gulf, where this is a whole department.
11
u/ProudPatriot07 South Carolina- Rural Young Democrat 1d ago
I agree, but we need to keep calling it the DOD and basically ignore the renaming until it's official, if that ever happens. 45/47 wants the attention from it and the more we give it to him, the more we say the name like it's official, it feels like we are hinting that it's okay for him to do this. Don't obey in advance and don't use the terminology (same with Gulf of Mexico).
11
u/diamond New Mexico 1d ago edited 1d ago
I agree, but we need to keep calling it the DOD and basically ignore the renaming until it's official, if that ever happens.
Highly unlikely it ever will IMO.
I'm pretty sure this requires a bill to pass through Congress, and while the perpetual monkey knife fight of the Republican House caucus might calm down long enough to do this, there's no way it passes the Senate. They won't get one Democrat to vote for this, much less 9, and I have a hard time believing that Thune would kill the Filibuster for something this stupid.
8
u/table_fireplace 2d ago
Yeah, I see this as Trump wanting to show how tough he is - between the ultra-aggressive name, and continuing to ignore Congress. The name won't officially change unless Congress does it, but Trump's going to keep calling it the new name and see if everyone goes along.
9
u/SecretComposer 2d ago
The problem, though, is 99% of the population doesn’t know this and won’t care. The idea of it being changed is enough for his war hawk supporters to love it and super peace loving leftists to hate it
5
u/br_k_nt_eth 1d ago
Plenty of his supporters also hate the perpetual wars. They remember Iraq and Afghanistan and voted for him thinking he’d be more isolationist.

Beginning tomorrow with an online rally, Graham Platner will be doing a 22 Rally Tour of Maine from Late September to Mid November, called The Un-Shuck The System Tour.
30
u/DeepPenetration Florida 2d ago
Fresh faces with bold ideas coming your way! This guy has the perfect background of being working class and a veteran. Hopefully Maine gets the job done.
Susan Collins, Rick Scott, and the rest of the GOP creeps can go kick rocks. The fact that having universal healthcare is a controversial idea is bonkers to me.
8
u/Meanteenbirder New York 2d ago
Planter really feels like Maine’s own Bernie Sanders the more you hear about him. The bigger difference is he is truly part of the state-specific working class and running while part of it. Not saying Bernie wasn’t, just that it’s been decades since he was not in politics.

23 days of Government Funding left, Adam Carlson agrees with a rare sensible position from Matthew Yglesias who says that Democrats should say no votes for The Government Funding Bill UNLESS the Republicans agree to renew the Obamacare Subsidies that are set to expire in 2026.
https://bsky.app/profile/grahamformaine.bsky.social/post/3lyb2hufjyk2l
Expanding on that, Graham Platner says that the reason he is pro government shutdown is that he believes absolutely everything should be tried to slow down the authoritarianism of The Trump Administration.

u/LinkSeekeroftheNora Ohio 1d ago
Restore Medicare and Medicaid and no more national guard invading cities. If there’s no promise of no more national guard invasions, no funding.
35
u/OptimistNate Wisconsin 1d ago edited 1d ago
Those subsidies should be an easy get as already 10 house republicans have pushed forth a bill to extend them past midterms.
https://www.politico.com/news/2025/09/04/aca-enhanced-tax-credits-extension-00544565
So even many Reps know they are in very troubled waters come 2026, and letting those subsidies expire would kill them.
I believe Schumer and Jeffries are pushing for something stronger, a full reversal of BBBs Medicaid cuts, and reigning in the executive, especially regarding rescission packages.
26
u/gbassman420 California 1d ago
They should vote NO because republicans will go through w whatever recessions they want after the budget is passed, anyway. You can't make a deal w untrustworthy people
18
u/Alexcat66 WI-7 (AD-30, SD-10) 1d ago
Plus the government has already been ravaged by DOGE cuts and mass resignations plus low morale, so what further damage that hasn’t been done yet will a government shutdown do? Arguably little if any. If anything, it may slow down some of the worst things various federal agencies are doing such as the ICE raids.

I saw just watching a video on another sub about a Donald voter absolutely giddy that he “just signed into law a bill that eliminated taxes on anyone making below $120,000”. A sort of “suck it Liberals” thing too. Boy these people are in for a rude awakening next year.

If she were working she’d see that taxes are still being taken out. But it’s not likely GOP voters have any sense of consistency. To put it mildly the video was low on facts so it’s not clear how she came to that conclusion.
Edit. The video is from TikTok but judging from the comments there also seems to be a bunch of “he eliminated taxes” posts going around on Facebook. Go figure.

I've shared this before, but it's worth telling it again -
I had a gal I worked with who would print out the emails, then take them over to the photocopier and make a copy of the email (she wanted to keep the original for her records) then slap a sticky note on the copy, write a note on it pertaining to the email, and leave it on my desk for the morning.
After a few of these, I rolled over to her desk and got to show her how to forward emails to me. She still printed them out sometimes - if they were important - but for the most part, we got thru it together.
She was in her 40s, btw.

I have not read the book so curious what book lovers’ reactions are- is it the general horniness of it?
11
u/SmoreOfBabylon Blorth Blarolina, c'mon and raise up 1d ago edited 1d ago
So, the original novel is basically a deconstruction of the dark, brooding Byronic Hero trope, wherein it turns out that the male lead (Heathcliff) really is a horrible, vengeful, abusive asshole and the obsessive love between him and the female lead (Cathy) is portrayed as toxic, destructive, and just generally pretty unromantic. And there has been a long tradition of Wuthering Heights adaptations, fanfiction, etc. comically missing this point and making Heathcliff a sexy, highly desirable bad boy and his relationship with Cathy a beautifully tragic romance. Aesthetically, this one appears to be veering into a bit of Fifty Shades of Grey as well.
Edit: also, the novel explicitly describes Heathcliff as having “dark” skin, akin to a “gipsy”, although whether he’s actually Romani, or something like mixed-race of African or Indian descent isn’t clear. So this movie casting a very pasty white actor to play the one ostensibly POC character in the book has also upset some people, although I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first screen adaptation to do that, unfortunately.
7
u/gbassman420 California 1d ago
That looks infinitely more interesting than I remember that book being
2
u/Sounder1995-2 Ohio 1d ago
Some people in the comments suggested that it wasn't originally supposed to be Wuthering Heights, and they later changed it to attract more eyeballs. Wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.
On the other hand, they could just be trying to emulate Bridgerton's success.

This has been an insane case to follow, and I expect it’ll take about 17 days for Netflix to have a documentary ready, if one already isn’t made.
And in New Zealand, a dude who took (kidnapped?) three of his kids into the wilderness four years ago and has only been sporadically spotted since then was shot and killed by police this morning. Now the mystery is .. where are the kids?

The worst example of this was former NC Commissioner of Labor Cherie Berry. It’s pronounced Sha-Ree, but of course everyone read it as Cherry. She was actually the first to put her picture on every elevator inspection certificate, so every time you were in an elevator, you saw what was essentially a campaign ad. Thanks to this the whole “LOL CHERRY BERRY LIFTS ME UP!” crap got going, with tshirts and bumper stickers and a dumb song. I knew nonpolitical normies who were still like “that’s my elevator queen Cherry Berry!” This allowed her to continually get re-elected despite being horrible at her job. She very literally ran in the first place bc her family owned a factory that got busted for labor violations, which she proceeded to ignore for years. When you read that NC is one of the worst states for workers, a lot of that’s on her 20+ year reign of neglect. But LOL HER NAME IS CHERRY (actually Cherie pronounced Sha-ree) BERRY SHE LIFTS ME UP.
Like, go to a normie gathering in today and try to say she was bad at her job and people will say you’re no fun, literally bc they still think it’s pronounced Cherry.
Besides, her name wasn’t even the funniest in NC politics. That honor went to my former County Commissioner, Cookie Pope.

I haven’t regularly watched TV news, especially cable news, in years, and honestly had no idea that the “s” in “Ghislaine Maxwell” is silent. Yes, that pronunciation tracks with it being a French-sounding name, but there are plenty of silent consonants in French words that English speakers fully pronounce all the time (eg. “Paris”).
1
u/caligaris_cabinet IL-08 1d ago
I’m usually pretty good (for an American) at pronouncing foreign names but if it’s French there’s a near 100% I’m butchering it.

u/Sounder1995-2 Ohio 1d ago
Hope that you're including the names of works. For many years in my life, I thought that Les Miserables was pronounced... well, exactly how you'd think that a native English speaker completely unfamiliar with French would pronounce it.

My favorite bbq place is a restaurant in Lockhart, TX called Kreuz Market. Having never heard the name out loud I’ve always pronounced it “Cruise” and have been for over 10 years. Still pronounce it “Cruise” though. I’m in too deep.

Hopefully the Peronists can grab the wheel and finally right the ship

Meh. The Peronists have decimated the economy for years. Argentinian voters go through hell in the options they have.

Just a small correction, Argentina’s equivalent of a midterm is at the end of October. This was basically local elections in Buenos Aires, which is still Argentina’s largest province.

Oh, oops. I had looked at the wiki to confirm what seats were up and didn't realize the page was for October elections.

Goddamn it, I woke up at my normal work time and spent over an hour thinking it was Monday. I was even starting to get dressed and ready for work before I realized it's Sunday. An extra hour and a half of sleep would've been real nice, but oh well.

u/wheezy_runner 2d ago
Well, look on the bright side: since it's Sunday, you can take a nap any time you want!

Is there any interesting updates on continuing funding to avert a shutdown. I been following it a bit but it seems to be oddly quiet considering how close to the deadline we are

Just saw the 2025 Red Sonja movie
This is a frustrating movie cause there is a lot of potential here
There are some great practical effects, set design, and a few good zingers. There are some story ideas that I think could work. I have seen these actors perform so much better in other things. But the direction is weird, there is some shockingly bad "as you know" exposition and ADR, and the pacing is all over the place. If the script/dialogue had been given a punch-up up it could have been a fun B movie
To paraphrase a line in the movie, "I give this a rating for the movie it could have been, not what it was."
If you want to see the main actress, Matilda Lutz, in a much better action movie where she acts much better, watch Revenge from 2017, the first big theatrical movie by Coralie Fargeat, director of The Substance. Like that, it's kinda a feminist horror/action movie, and Lutz is great, although major trigger warnings for SA

Fun fact about the 1985 Red Sonja film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger: He called it "the worst movie I ever made". That's hilarious.

It has such a goofy charm I can't help but like it. The outrageous hats/costumes, doofy sets, the wizard who gets caught watching sexy loincloth vids, it's so silly

I genuinely didn't know this movie existed. And I'm a terminally online geek, that typically doesn't happen to me, I generally hear at least a little about movies of this sort. They really must've not advertised it.
I'll always love the fact that Arnold is so embarrassed by the 1985 movie where he plays totally-not-Conan-for-legal-reasons that he joked that if his kids misbehaved he'd punish them by making them watch it.

Greg Cipes has a history of pushing antivax and crypto shit using his characters on social media, and the timeline of when he says he was fired in February doesn't seem to line up with other posts he's made where he said he had started recording new TTG episodes five weeks ago. He also publicly came forward with his Parkinson's diagnosis in March.
In short, this whole thing seems suspicious. Potentially a Hellena Taylor Bayonetta 3 case where he's lying about why he got fired for sympathy points.

Yeah….Cipes is a cool guy but….out there. I have a friend that works with him and he is very antivax and is basically Beast Boy in the way of veganism.

Highly recommend Coit Tower! Super interesting 1930s WPA-era murals on the walls when you walk up the stairs, but there’s also an elevator that should be working if you don’t have my luck. And you can get a half-portion of cioppino at Sotto Mare if you’re by yourself. Delicious.

IIRC, the Coit Tower is one of the places where the city’s wild parakeets sometimes hang out (or, at least it was when I went up the tower about 15 years ago).

San Francisco City Hall is by far the nicest City Hall in the country, I think. Definitely worth checking out.
Brenda's French Soul Food for really any meal, but I loved their breakfast.
Also big fan of Tartine Manufactory. Again, great for any meal.

I got married (first time - still friends with ex) at SF City Hall and had celebratory dinner at Brenda’s afterwards years ago. Absolutely delicious!

I went on a business trip to San Francisco a few years ago, and one day when I had the whole day to myself, I bought a Muni pass and just kinda rode around everywhere, lol. From a transit nerd standpoint, I think I liked the vintage streetcars that run through the Fisherman’s Wharf/Embarcadero areas even more than the cable cars.

Late to comment, but it's time for the weekly book club. What have you been reading?
I sadly had to give up on Hyperion because it really wasn't grabbing me at all. It felt like I was reading a list of proper nouns more than an actual story. My apologies to all the Hyperion fans, I might give it another go in the future though.
So I switched to The Godfather instead. I haven't seen the movies in over 20 years, so aside from major plot points I'm practically going in blind. So far I'm enjoying it, but Francis Ford Coppola said in the introduction that he initially thought the book was "filled with sex & silliness". And he wasn't wrong, this book is raunchy as hell for no reason. It's pretty distracting when you're getting sucked into the plot when the book pauses so one of the POV characters can go on a rant about how they enjoy hitting their wife & then go into explicit detail about the sex they have with some random girl. And this happens pretty often throughout the book.
I still overall enjoy it, but Mario Puzo definitely should've toned that aspect way down.

I'm impatiently waiting for the new Slow Horses novel to come out (two days now!), so in the meantime I'm reading a classic of the political thriller genre: The Bourne Supremacy. I read The Bourne Identity a few years ago, and I'm finally getting around to the sequel.
It's fascinating to me, because I know this is a classic, and the story itself is really interesting, intricate, and well-constructed. But the writing itself? Yikes. Ludlum was clearly a very smart and thoughtful guy, but he wrote prose and dialogue like an edgy 13-year-old. Like... it's really painful to read sometimes. The only other book I can think of like this was The Three Body Problem, and I just chalked that up to the translation.
I don't mean to be disrespectful; the guy was doing what he loved, he gave us some classic and memorable stories, and good for him. But I'm honestly surprised his career got off the ground in the first place. Maybe standards have changed in the last few decades, but I would expect most publishers to look at something written like this and go for an immediate Hard Pass.

Read/Reread the second and third hardcover volumes of Lumberjanes since my kickstarter finally came in. I forgot how much I love that comic and what kids really need now, especially those who want to find out who they really are.

I appreciated Ezra Klein's article about the shutdown this morning. Gift link: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/07/opinion/trump-senate-democrats-shutdown.html?unlocked_article_code=1.kE8.Q4qn.eyFSV1Z0VsU6&smid=nytcore-android-share

Ezra Klein calling out Dem leadership for failing to articulate a strategy for this upcoming shutdown was not on my bingo card
But seriously the unnamed Democratic Senator in the article talking about restraint is how we got here.
Pritzker, Newsom, and Mamdani- who don’t agree on everything might I add- are all fighting and showing the party if you stand up to a bully he backs off
I’m glad Klein is calling it out

If Democrats Have a Better Plan, I’d Like to Hear It
Aaaaaand you lost me, Ezra. God forbid we actually try and look like we’re doing something by trying to get back medicaid funding.
The pundits seriously need to fuck off at this point. Especially when they never gave Trump or the GOP this level of scrutiny ever.
