What to watch if I liked “1883” and “American Primeval”?
I watched and enjoyed both of the above. I’m no expert on Westerns so I’m not sure where to go next. I prefer limited run TV shows.
Has anyone seen “The English”? I tried the first episode but it wasn’t landing for me.

One reply says Deadwood, one reply says Godless. Those are the two shows. You'd probably enjoy Hell on Wheels as well.

As someone who has not watched any of these shows but deadwood but loved it. What one’s stack up? I’m a sucker for good dialogue and characters rather than straight up action.

Deadwood is the top of the mountain for dialogue, nothing is going to fully scratch that itch. As far as westerns and specifically the other two mentioned, Godless is a miniseries but delivers the story and performance, Hell on Wheels is much more on the fun side. Still an AMC quality show (Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Halt and Catch Fire, etc.) so the scenic and performance quality is there, but it's probably the closest to 1883.

Yeah. Nothing will ever reach Deadwood levels I guess. They both sound good! I'll give one of them a suss.

Prefer limited run as 36 episodes of Deadwood is a lot to commit to! But I’ll consider it as it’s highly recommended. Thank you.

I heard it’s more horror? I’m not really into gore for its own sake but if it’s a realistic part of a story then I’ll consider it.

Its one of the best modern Westerns. There is one really brutal realistic gore scene, but it isnt for its own sake. You will care for almost all characters in the movie, and the action scenes and death are realistic as if you are watching a documentary. Director Craig Zahler is known for this style of filming.

How about, He’ll on Wheels or Lonesome Dove? Bone Tomahawk was entertaining but not really a western. 3:10 to Yuma is my fav.
2
u/timberwolfwatcher 1h ago
I think I’m going to give Lonesome Dove another go!
And I really like both versions of 3:10 to Yuma (currently humming the tune from the first one now!) - which is your favourite?

Lonesome dove and its sequels, would be a good place to start off if you want some good western miniseries

u/timberwolfwatcher 13h ago
I tried Lonesome Dove and I struggled with it. I’m guessing it’s slow burn? But I’ll give it another try.

Taylor Sheridan has put references to lonesome dove in his work and 1883 has a similar plot.

The Revenant, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Last of The Mohicans, Dances With Wolves.

I meant more TV show - sorry I should’ve said. But! I’ve seen all of these except Last of the Flower Moon and I loved them all.

Well... In that case I recommend Gettysburg or Lonesome Dove....
And you gotta check out KotFM... Its wild what happened.

Well you need to try Lonesome Dove regardless but based off what you've liked so far I'd concur with several others here already and say you should try Godless, Deadwood, and Hell on Wheels

Preacher, more of a neo-western but I think you would still like it.

Give “The English” some time. It gets better and better. Give “Godless” a shot too.

Damnation, Godless, Deadwood.

Godless is too good and extremely underrated!Actually thanks for reminding me it’s time to watch it again
1
u/timberwolfwatcher 1h ago
Haven’t heard of Damnation but Godless has a lot of recommendations so I’ll check that out.
Deadwood has too many episodes to catch up on so I might have to think that one over.

For a modern take, but very much a Western, speaking as a fan of Westerns since the 60s; Longmire. And Lonesome Dove, without a doubt.

u/timberwolfwatcher 1h ago
I saw something about Longmire a while ago and it sounded good. And I think I’m going to give Lonesome Dove another go!

I liked "The Sisters Brothers", with John C Reilly, Joaquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal.

The English was a slow burn but there were moments there that made it a great series form me
2
u/timberwolfwatcher 13h ago
Might give it a second chance then. I don’t mind a slow burn if I know it’s going somewhere.
3
u/averagesoccermom95 12h ago
It is going somewhere, and everything does come together by the end. I thought it was briliant storytelling and the images are wonderful. I put it up there in my Top 5.

The Black Robe (1991) is excellent … 17th Century Jesuits in New France. I came across the book first, but the movie is just as good.

Off of American Primeval i recommend The Pacific/Band of Brothers. Good gritty USA shows.

I’ve seen Band of Brothers and loved it. Though I’m looking more for westerns.
