It means your carrier now lets you use RCS chats, Rich Communications Services.

It's essentially Androids version of iMessage.

One thing to remember are if you have no internet connection a message wont get sent. So you might have to resend as an actual sms. It will tell you in tje message app when it has happened.

i had assumed it is intended to take over SMS after a certain point, since iOS now has RCS capability, depending on the carrier and the individual’s iOS version

Yep, that's all it means, which was explained either before you selected the option or after, but your phone should have popped with more of an explanation and a link for further Information.

If you turn it off then back on you'll get the link again.
