Whittier: we’ve got the cleanest cars around! Another City Council failure.

They had 4 at one point I wouldn't even go pay for crappy Mexican food when Whittier Blvd has better.

How many car washes do we need? I swear we have a new one every other corner now. What a waste of valuable space in the city

Maybe it’s just because I lived in the IE for a few years and out there there is literally a car wash on every corner, but I haven’t seen that many car washes in town. Then again, I don’t visit anywhere south of Whittier blvd very often outside of work so it might be a bigger problem there, but I thought we could use another car wash or two. I just prefer hand washes or true detail spas, not this automated shit.

You gotta wash money one way or another….

yup they're an easy way to launder money and clean what I have been told.

It’ll probably open before Quick Quack lol

Maybe it'll replace quick quick?

Corporate Absolutely positively promise me (for the third time) that they will be open on August 28… I should've asked which year… Will also be the most expensive car wash at $12 for the cheapest wash. May be having 27 car washes in the city will help bring the prices back down for five bucks… Yeah probably not.

I’m currently subscribed at 5 n Go. It’s $45 a month for the top tier, and I get an air freshener and microfiber towel each time. $12 for a basic is a ripoff

I was so pissed that they closed down the turtle hand wash for a quick quack. I lived in the IE for 4 years. I fucking hate quick quacks. They’re everywhere out there and it’s literally the worst automated car wash I’ve ever been to.

Kick EOS fitness out of the groves and put a car wash in, it’ll be a net benefit overall

Money laundering that’s why

Honestly, I wouldn’t mind so much if it was a hand car wash, that employed real people. Those have all been replaced.

There’s nothing but automatic car washes and chicken strip restaurants around here. What happened to preserving this city’s charm?!

What can be done about the strip-mall-ification of town? I was so excited to move back home to Whittier, sold my wife on the “big small town” feel and the neighborly community oriented vibe. But if they’re just gonna turn it into Rancho Cucamonga or Chino/Eastvale that’s fucking terrible. I want the Whittier my grandparents lived in.

Let's clear some misconceptions here. The City of Whittier isn't actively seeking out car washes to come to the city. Anyone, as a business owner can go to city hall and apply for a permit to do business in the city.

The city has some restrictions on what types of businesses are allowed i.e., medical marijuana dispensaries are not allowed in the city limits so you're out of luck if you wanted to open up shop in Whittier proper.

Next, the city might restrict the amount of a certain type of business for example, second hand thrift stores are now on temporary restriction. Meaning, you'll get denied a permit to do business until another second hand store closes or goes out of business. You can choose to sue but will most likely lose because the city has gone through legal steps to have certain restrictions in place.

Taco and burger joints will almost always be allowed because by nature very few survive the first five years of business. So, it might appear that Whittier only has taco and burger joints when in actuality there is a revolving door for these types of businesses.

As a land owner, they should be allowed to do whatever they want with their property within reason of course.

It's my understanding that this ex-Office Depot location was first approached by the owners of Transhine (the auto detailer next door) to open a larger car washing facility shortly after Office Depot announced they would be closing. I don't know if it is actually Transhine who will be operating Whittier's newest car wash.

It could be worse. I'm shocked they didn't announce a four-story condo complex for that location - or another fly-by-night "pallet flipping" store like the monstrosity at the old Big Lots on Painter and Whittier.

Also, The City Council needs to hear your complaints about too many car washes. Make your voice heard. Yes, I think it's ridiculous that we are getting yet another car wash. But at the same time I'd rather see a business built then a vacant plywood boarded-up building year after year.

Hmmm I wonder why these car washes go out of business in these exact areas…. Oh well let’s open another one, it should work this time

Either car washes or 3 story apartments… you chose

2

u/SanchosaurusRex 11d ago

Ill take 3 story buildings with the ground floor being retail space. Better than turning the city into a glorified truck stop.

Well, since they plan on doing nothing about ice . Hand car wash businesses will eventually close, and they will hapily green light the alternative

YESSSSSS i was hoping either tire shop, flooring supply, liquor store, neon sign store, pet food store. but we got it... just what we needed...not any cool cafe's, no food options,no no... a carwash.

To bad Trader Joe’s could not relocate across the street. Would have doubled their sales. Their current location parking is a nightmare.

Whittier is so determined to be strip mall hell.

4

u/gotfondue 15d ago

What did the city council do? The business was the one who decided to open there...im confused.

0

u/Old-Candy9223 14d ago

approved the permits for construction and business

2

u/gotfondue 14d ago

Let’s get this straight. City council isn’t out here running around starting car washes like it’s their side hustle. Private companies decide what to build. The council’s role is to review and approve permits if the business meets zoning and code requirements.

You can be mad that the rules allow yet another car wash, that’s fair, but blaming the council for “opening” it is like blaming the DMV for buying your car because they issued you a driver’s license.

If you want to change what gets built, push for zoning changes or ordinances that limit over-saturation. Otherwise, the council is just doing the job the law requires, whether you like the end result or not.

1

u/MrMightKnowItAll 8d ago

True, but the council can do temporary moratoriums for certain business like Downey did with discount stores.

2

u/Best-Jury8669 15d ago

MAGA Mayor looking for more ICE Stop-n-Go easy pick up locations?

2

u/Scr4bs 15d ago

Another carwash will open up soon, it's the one off of Valley view and Leffingwell.

2

u/CAD4LIFE 15d ago

Ill take odds that this will open sooner than the one on Oceanview and Whittier. They both have been taking forever to finish up construction.
