If you're gonna have someone spot you at least make sure they're not a stick figure
94
u/LongJonSlayer 16d ago
Even a stick figure is fine if you're only going 5-20 lbs over your limit (and they know what they're doing).

u/KAHLYP90 16d ago
Exactly, any time I’ve pushed past my max my buddy has been able to help me get it up using two fingers on each hand, if your buddy needs to take off more than 30 lbs of weight you had no business trying it in the first place

Incredibly dumb video but it's very obvious why someone would be filming. Tons of people film gym lifts, especially if they're going for a PB.

This is what my girlfriend thinks is gonna happen when we go to the gym together. In reality shes probably stronger than me.

What in the actual fuck was that?? I love how the tiny woman steps away as to not get in the way of him decapitating himself….

Why did the guy ask a girl with stick arms to be your spotter? If he couldn't lift those fucking weights, how was she supposed to?
33
u/Lisa7x 16d ago
This was clear from the first second, he couldn't even lift it up himself

u/Arding16 16d ago
It’s not super uncommon to have someone help with the lift. It lets him conserve his energy for the actual rep. Now in this case, this guy is an egomaniacal idiot, but had he been doing a sensible max weight and completed a rep or two, the lift off would have been fair enough

u/shartnado3 16d ago
This guy is an idiot, yes. But sometimes this is a psychological trick. Back when I was playing football, and working out a lot we’d always try to increase our max lifts (personal challenges). I remember going for my personal best on bench press and having another really strong dude spot me. He “helped” the bar lift off and I did two reps and set it back down.
Afterwards he told me he didn’t touch it at all and it was all me.
Not sure that is what this guy was going for, but he should have definitely had someone that could at least help him stop it from choking himself to death

u/coko4209 16d ago
What did he think she could do exactly? Does he not understand the function of a spotter?

u/CleanHead_ 16d ago
Im not a professional body builder, but I'd think a more effective spotter would help.

I’ve said “no” to spotting at Planet Fitness on a smith machine. No chance I’d entertain this nonsense. I know my limits.

And this ladies and gentlemen is why you don't secure the weights on one side.
3
u/Bammalam102 16d ago
Just dont put the clips on! If you fail the weights will slide off and you are left with only a 45lb bar.

u/Ibraheem_moizoos 16d ago
I have to downvite you because this does not belong in this subreddit. They were filming their lift. People do it all the time.

You need a spotter that knows what they're doing. This girl didn't, and it's obvious. If you can't lift it and it's on his neck, pull the pins and clamps off and pull the weights off.
3
u/artgarfunkadelic 16d ago
Honest question....
Would the thing to do be to remove the pins on one side and remove the weights?
1
u/GauruBeard 16d ago
I never use pins on my benchpress. It's not much due to humeral osteosynthesis with a titanium plate (308lbs/140kg for 2 reps, 130kg/4, 120kg/12 reps) but it is enough to choke me hard or brake a neck. With pins it's much harder to roll barbell down to stomach as long as all the initial weight is still there.

u/artgarfunkadelic 16d ago
So you let the weights, idk, "free float"? So if this happens the weights can fall off as soon as it tips to one side?
1
u/GauruBeard 15d ago
Yeah, if I measure my reps/weight ratio correctly nothing happens, maybe just a little movement, but in case of emergency I tip barbell over to one side to drop off plates.

I want to know how that conversation went afterwards

u/IWouldntIn1981 16d ago
Yeah... even if he is a solid dude, there was definitely a second where he looked at her like "wtf?" before having to admit that he made a series of poor choices.
If he's a prick, he might still be screaming at her.

Maybe dont ask a woman that much smaller than you to spot you on a weight you clearly are unable to do yet?
2
u/thrown6667 14d ago
Seems like it might have been a bad idea to have someone who couldn't lift even 1/4 of he weight spotting him. I'm not a gym bro by any means, but I'd like to know, especially when benching, that the person I have spotting me can move the weight off of my throat. That's just me, though. Some folks are into that kind of thing.

u/Gorfo_Kif 16d ago
I feel like this doesn't really match the purpose of this subreddit. It's obvious why they were filming.

u/darkkerknight 16d ago
The weights weigh more than the girl....what was he thinking? Spotter doesn't mean "lookout if someone is around".....it means help me if I fuck up

Why would someone be benching and having a spotter that can't help with the one situation in which you need a spotter for?....

Looks like it's probably india. At this stage, if he doesn't know to have clamps removed and have a real spotter, then it's better to stick to scamming people.

Not seen: the next 5 seconds and the reason they were filming: him hauling off and slugging her.
