This guy is an idiot.

611

u/GoodShark 16d ago

Yup. When you're doing bench press, specifically with a max weight, don't put the clamps on. That way, if this happens, you roll to one side, and all the weights fall off.

This guy is DEFINITELY an idiot.

122

u/adoodle83 16d ago

How about you get a proper spotter too. Or multiple spotters with weight that heavy

22

u/Krimreaper1 14d ago

When your spotter weighs less than what your benching you might be in trouble.

4

u/eat_your_oatmeal 14d ago

took the words out of my mouth, 💯this

135

u/nedal8 16d ago

And be under the damn rack. He was wayy too far forward.

36

u/VET65 16d ago

Don't ever put collars on for bench.

13

u/toxicatedscientist 16d ago

I was taught that one side gets collar, depending on which side might have traffic

67

u/BAF_DaWg82 16d ago

Could tell hes an idiot by his little LFG pre lift bit, and also im pretty sure that form is very incorrect.

4

u/HeatEmUpBois 15d ago

Also, why is there a girl helping him? Have a fellow body builder?

1

u/RemLazar911 13d ago

Maybe the girl is a fellow body builder

10

u/hakujin214 15d ago

This is a good way to catapult a 20kg metal bar across a gym and potentially really hurt someone or yourself. It drives me crazy when people give this advice because it is so incredibly foolish. Use a spotter, or two or three if you are moving that much weight, and the safeties.

Turning exercise equipment into projectiles is never a good idea.

32

u/SpiralGray 16d ago

So is the guy who wrote the title of this post.

66

u/ThrustTrust 16d ago

So is the girl. Take a damn class on leverage.

70

u/BeGoku 16d ago

I could be wrong, but that looks like a sister or daughter. 13 at the eldest? No workout clothes, barefoot, completely clueless about gym equipment ( nothing wrong with any of this, until you ask them to spot you )

14

u/ThrustTrust 16d ago

You might be right. so blurry on my phone I can’t tell

-17

u/xpsycotikx 16d ago

You can be clueless about weightlifting and still understand how a lever works.

10

u/kurotech 16d ago

And you can weigh 95 pounds and not be strong enough to lift 95 pounds. This is on weight bro not the person who he has spotting them. If you think your spotter can handle helping you then you take that risk 100% and when you trust someone who has never spotted before like is evident here, then you are responsible for your safety and them not being able to safely spot you.

I think she is his wife. I don't blame her. Whether she is capable as spotter or not should be known by the guy. Moreover, she seems to go in panic mode. No physics or math would work when you go in panic. She doesn't seem to be very strong as well. All in all, the guy is an idiot, ego lifter and put him and his wife in dangerous situation.

8

u/fatkiddown 16d ago

Finish him!

1

u/Magoo1985 13d ago

😂😂🤣🤣🙂‍↔️😏🤤

Came here to say that. Enjoy the upvote.

-4

u/nonstopflux 15d ago

Go away

-4

u/-Joka 15d ago

After you

609

u/poncho5202 16d ago

why ask her to spot him? were there no toddlers available? maybe a paper cut out of a person?

90

u/thedudefromsweden 16d ago

Runs away like it's a bomb

21

u/CharlieParkour 16d ago

Could a toddler pull it back so it was over his neck instead of his chest?

125

u/downvotethetrash 16d ago

Wow this is so much dumb in one video

44

u/johnnyxx4321 16d ago

including op. never heard of anyone filming in the gym

347

u/Castille_92 16d ago

If you're gonna have someone spot you at least make sure they're not a stick figure

94

u/LongJonSlayer 16d ago

Even a stick figure is fine if you're only going 5-20 lbs over your limit (and they know what they're doing).

29

u/Wheloc 16d ago

This was a salvageable situation... if they knew what they were doing.

13

u/KAHLYP90 16d ago

Exactly, any time I’ve pushed past my max my buddy has been able to help me get it up using two fingers on each hand, if your buddy needs to take off more than 30 lbs of weight you had no business trying it in the first place

6

u/Ubivorn 16d ago

Also would've helped if the stick figure at least knew to pull upwards instead forward towards his neck 😵💀

11

u/Tru3insanity 16d ago

She prob weighs less than the weights.

10

u/You-get-the-ankles 16d ago

"Let me pull this off your chest onto your face and neck."

16

u/Sancticide 16d ago

"Shhhh, it'll be over soon..."

61

u/SwallowsOnSundays 16d ago

People often film themselves working out

142

u/Keebster101 16d ago

Incredibly dumb video but it's very obvious why someone would be filming. Tons of people film gym lifts, especially if they're going for a PB.

23

u/0RGASMIK 16d ago

This is what my girlfriend thinks is gonna happen when we go to the gym together. In reality shes probably stronger than me.

17

u/RednocNivert 16d ago

“Never skip Neck Day” he says as he sets that onto his windpipe

45

u/Swankenstein89 16d ago

What in the actual fuck was that?? I love how the tiny woman steps away as to not get in the way of him decapitating himself….

18

u/JbotTheGamer 16d ago

And then proceeds to pull it over his neck, like christ

11

u/Shadow950hun 16d ago

Why did the guy ask a girl with stick arms to be your spotter? If he couldn't lift those fucking weights, how was she supposed to?

33

u/Lisa7x 16d ago

This was clear from the first second, he couldn't even lift it up himself

7

u/Arding16 16d ago

It’s not super uncommon to have someone help with the lift. It lets him conserve his energy for the actual rep. Now in this case, this guy is an egomaniacal idiot, but had he been doing a sensible max weight and completed a rep or two, the lift off would have been fair enough

12

u/shartnado3 16d ago

This guy is an idiot, yes. But sometimes this is a psychological trick. Back when I was playing football, and working out a lot we’d always try to increase our max lifts (personal challenges). I remember going for my personal best on bench press and having another really strong dude spot me. He “helped” the bar lift off and I did two reps and set it back down.

Afterwards he told me he didn’t touch it at all and it was all me.

Not sure that is what this guy was going for, but he should have definitely had someone that could at least help him stop it from choking himself to death

8

u/coko4209 16d ago

What did he think she could do exactly? Does he not understand the function of a spotter?

8

u/CleanHead_ 16d ago

Im not a professional body builder, but I'd think a more effective spotter would help.

8

u/VET65 16d ago

Always be able to dump weights

8

u/dpr_jr 16d ago

The whole point of a spotter is they can lift the weight when needed lesson learned for sure

7

u/guiltybyproxy 16d ago

"If he dies, he dies"

3

u/rcmacman 16d ago

I understood that reference

6

u/lsizani 16d ago

Placebo spotter

7

u/MkLiam 16d ago

Yeah, isn't your spotter supposed to be able to lift what you are benching?

2

u/lsizani 15d ago

Based on the video, I'd say it's most sensible that your spotter will be able to lift the weight.

7

u/IndoorMule 16d ago

I’ve said “no” to spotting at Planet Fitness on a smith machine. No chance I’d entertain this nonsense. I know my limits.

5

u/Sellswordinthegrove 16d ago

And this ladies and gentlemen is why you don't secure the weights on one side.

3

u/yulmun 16d ago

This video oozes stupidity

3

u/Bammalam102 16d ago

Just dont put the clips on! If you fail the weights will slide off and you are left with only a 45lb bar.

7

u/Ibraheem_moizoos 16d ago

I have to downvite you because this does not belong in this subreddit. They were filming their lift. People do it all the time.

3

u/22switch 16d ago

Obvious answer, filming because it's a big lift.

3

u/saintpumpkin 16d ago

missed darwin award

3

u/interestingfactiod 16d ago

You need a spotter that knows what they're doing. This girl didn't, and it's obvious. If you can't lift it and it's on his neck, pull the pins and clamps off and pull the weights off.

3

u/artgarfunkadelic 16d ago

Honest question....

Would the thing to do be to remove the pins on one side and remove the weights?

1

u/GauruBeard 16d ago

I never use pins on my benchpress. It's not much due to humeral osteosynthesis with a titanium plate (308lbs/140kg for 2 reps, 130kg/4, 120kg/12 reps) but it is enough to choke me hard or brake a neck. With pins it's much harder to roll barbell down to stomach as long as all the initial weight is still there.

1

u/artgarfunkadelic 16d ago

So you let the weights, idk, "free float"? So if this happens the weights can fall off as soon as it tips to one side?

1

u/GauruBeard 15d ago

Yeah, if I measure my reps/weight ratio correctly nothing happens, maybe just a little movement, but in case of emergency I tip barbell over to one side to drop off plates.

2

u/artgarfunkadelic 15d ago

Thanks for the explanations

3

u/bradleyone 15d ago

Remember: he did this, AND THEN he posted it to the internet.

6

u/Patient-Profit 16d ago

I want to know how that conversation went afterwards

11

u/IWouldntIn1981 16d ago

Yeah... even if he is a solid dude, there was definitely a second where he looked at her like "wtf?" before having to admit that he made a series of poor choices.

If he's a prick, he might still be screaming at her.

3

u/stickystax 16d ago

At best...

2

u/stickystax 16d ago

Looked like he was jumping up to yell at or hit her at the very end tbh

2

u/pwnasaurus253 16d ago

lol why would you put the collars on and have basically no spotter. Death wish.

4

u/adognameddanzig 16d ago

She's was holding down that bar, trying to get some insurance money.

4

u/mrobins345 16d ago

Looks like she was trying to kill him pulling it closer to his neck. 😳😝

2

u/therealsoggi 16d ago

You Allrad know he’s stupid wearing a belt during bench press

2

u/chrisr3240 16d ago

He was like ‘fuck it. I’m gonna die. She’s coming with me…’

2

u/Embarrassed-Towel-19 16d ago

Not her fault. He should've had a real spotter. Glad he lived.

2

u/Zepp_BR 16d ago

Mission failed agent 47

2

u/RayAlmighty13 16d ago

Learn to pick your spotter better my dude.

Muscle head doing muscle head things

3

u/Gothic_Mist 16d ago

There is always an idiot among lifiters who overestimate their strength

2

u/nerforbuff 16d ago

Ego lift, many a man has fallen victim to such a phenomenon

2

u/Huy3ko 16d ago

Less braincells than less Muskels.

2

u/ANAL_DRAGONS 15d ago

Maybe dont ask a woman that much smaller than you to spot you on a weight you clearly are unable to do yet?

2

u/thrown6667 14d ago

Seems like it might have been a bad idea to have someone who couldn't lift even 1/4 of he weight spotting him. I'm not a gym bro by any means, but I'd like to know, especially when benching, that the person I have spotting me can move the weight off of my throat. That's just me, though. Some folks are into that kind of thing.

4

u/Gorfo_Kif 16d ago

I feel like this doesn't really match the purpose of this subreddit. It's obvious why they were filming.

2

u/darkkerknight 16d ago

The weights weigh more than the girl....what was he thinking? Spotter doesn't mean "lookout if someone is around".....it means help me if I fuck up

1

u/Vegetable_Burrito 16d ago

I think we all know why he was filming…

1

u/sdw318_local194 16d ago

God that had to be scary

1

u/asalerre 16d ago

What a buddy

1

1

Maybe it was the belt

1

u/joeyb1b 16d ago

OMG still laughing!

1

u/bradleyone 15d ago

I sure hope he yelled at her. Looks like the kind of guy who might.

1

u/Bidcar 15d ago

Real life Final Destination

1

u/fetusauce69 15d ago

He later hugged that girl and cried

1

u/flav512 15d ago

This was attempted murder

1

u/calangomerengue 15d ago

When you set a plan B, make sure plan B works.

1

u/sinkocto 14d ago

I bet he drives a jeep wrangler.

1

u/dukerenegade 14d ago

Why did she haul ass out of there right when he started?

1

u/lunarson24 14d ago

Why would someone be benching and having a spotter that can't help with the one situation in which you need a spotter for?....

1

u/tokyoxplant 14d ago

Dumb and dumber. Take your pick as to which is which.

1

u/chaosifier 14d ago

she made it worse

1

u/Eyeluvflixs 1d ago

Never have a spotter weight less than the weights your trying to lift.

1

u/terminalxposure 16d ago

Which is why I never lock my weights in

1

u/JansherMalik25 16d ago

Looks like it's probably india. At this stage, if he doesn't know to have clamps removed and have a real spotter, then it's better to stick to scamming people.

-1

u/MinnieShoof 16d ago

Not seen: the next 5 seconds and the reason they were filming: him hauling off and slugging her.

0

u/The_Anonymo 16d ago

Darwin likes that! Wtf.

0

u/blind_squash 16d ago

The following day was the best day of that dudes life

-5

u/Dr-Lipschitz 16d ago

Moron. Let's just jump on top of the weights.

5

u/Artistic_Taxi 16d ago

??

She’s trying to deadlift the bar it seems.
