Mod Announcement Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, here are some guidelines for requesting assistance

Welcome to /r/WindowsHelp, the subreddit for you to ask questions and get support for issues related to Microsoft's Windows family of operating systems. Please give this a quick read before posting.

This subreddit is only for help related to Microsoft Windows and its built in software, like Edge, Store, PowerShell, and so on. Issues about 3rd party software like Chrome or Steam should be posted in their subreddits or /r/techsupport. Also, this is not a hardware subreddit, so issues like your hard drive is not detected would need to be posted in /r/techsupport. General discussions, news, artwork, and so on should be in /r/Windows, /r/Windows10 or similar subreddits. Malware/virus removal has been covered extensively in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/33evdi/suggested_reading_official_malware_removal_guide/

Posts are required to have a moderately descriptive title. Submissions with vague titles like just "help me" will be removed. You don't need to write an essay in the title, but everyone should have a rough idea what you are asking about before even clicking the link. Titles like "I'm encountering System Exception errors when launching Photos" or "20H2 update won't install" are acceptable, but the more details the better.

The body of your post should also be as detailed as possible. We are not mind readers, and nobody is going to want to play 20 questions. Help us help you, your post should include:

  • Your full Windows version, which on Windows 10 is listed in the Settings app under System -> About, it will be the OS Build number.

  • Details about your device, like the hardware specifications.

  • Any recent changes you have made, such as installing/uninstalling software or accessories. Any updates you have installed, tools you have ran, or anything else you think may be relevant.

  • Include details on your error messages and error codes, these are critical to figuring out the issue.

  • Tell us what you have already tried to fix this. Any tools you have ran, and changes you tried, and so on. I know it is a meme at this point, but seriously, reboot your computer, it often fixes things!

  • If possible, include screenshots or video. If you are including screenshots, try to use screenshot software like Snip & Sketch tool built into Windows 10, then you can upload them to a free image host like https://imgur.com to put in your post. We understand that using screenshot software isn't always an option, you can take photos with a phone or similar device, but please be sure to check to make sure everything is in focus and is legible.

This subreddit follows the same rules as /r/Windows, you can view the full rule page here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows/wiki/rules

The TL;DR of the rules is be polite, helpful, and don't encourage piracy.

Mod Announcement Please refrain from making satirical or joke comments on this subreddit

Hello everyone. When responding to a users post, please do not use this as an opportunity to try to be humorous. Users are posting here because they need help, and often are desperate and may not know that your suggestion is supposed to be a joke. Comments like "throw it out" do not contribute, and comments like "delete system32" can be dangerous if successfully carried out. While this is not a highly moderated tightly ran super serious subreddit like /r/AskScience, we do ask that you try and be helpful instead of humorous. Remember, if it is you asking for help, you are going to want real responses instead of others clowning around at your expense. As always, while we do not prohibit mentions of Linux on this subreddit, low effort suggestions of switching to Linux is still considered trolling.

On a similar note, you should avoid commenting based on speculation. Of course it is impossible for one to know everything, and sometimes it is difficult to get all the information you need from the OP, but if you comment is including something along the lines of "I think you can", please try and look that up to ensure you do not share misinformation.

Thank you for your understanding!

Saw news recently about the KB5063878 update causing issues that could potentially brick your SSD, I wanted to rollback but it seems the update isn't appearing on the uninstall updates category.

Windows 11 Question about custom folder icons

Upvotes

I was wondering whether there is a way to automatically assign a custom icon to folders with a file of a specific file type directly in them. My specific application is that I want to mark folders that represent an FL Studio project, which always contains a .flp file. I'm trying to do this on windows 11

Windows 11 Main Volume control problem…..

Upvotes

Hey, my laptop volume is stuck at 100% until the volume slider gets to zero then it mutes. So basically I can only be at 100% or zero percent. I am able to adjust volume on individual apps like YouTube with their dedicated volume control. (I’ll send a video because I don’t know if I’m explaining this effectively) Currently running windows 11 on an Alienware M16 R2

Windows 10 Issues installing a cumulative update

Upvotes

I recently installed Tiny10 on a computer, a pretty new Lenovo laptop (I can get specs later) and it is fully refusing to install a particular update, 2025-08 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5066188). I've tried just about everything I could find, the troubleshooter, SFC, DISM, but none of it worked. I wouldn't really care, but it seems like some of the games I was going to get on it require the update.

Windows 11 Win11 upgrade New motherboard - how to check if I can reactivate beforehand?

Upvotes

I need to upgrade my parents PC to win11. They need a new CPU and mobo due to the whole TPM thing (it's a old dual core, linux is not an option so the update is kind of needed sooner or later anyway).

before I install new hardware, how can I know that windows will reactivate? Eg if it was an OEM license or retail license? Can I see that in settings somewhere?

I want to give my parents a quote about cost and if a new win11 license is needed, well that will be part of it.

Windows 11 Should I uninstall update KB5063878 if my SSD seems fine?

I clean-installed Windows on August 20 due to a new graphics card, and update KB5063878 was installed automatically. Since then, I’ve installed Cyberpunk, Wukong, Hunt—large games—and haven’t had any issues with the update. Yesterday, I saw posts that this update is “killing” SSDs. I checked my 2 TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe SSD using AIDA Extreme, and it shows 100 % health—everything seems fine. I tried to uninstall the update, but the OS says it’s important and won’t let me remove it. I even tried via command line, but it returned an error. So here’s my question: do I even need to uninstall it if everything is fine now? Could uninstalling it cause more trouble than leaving it alone?

Windows 11 Win11 wit's end - can't see files in network locations that are visible on other machines

Upvotes

I've been using Windows 11 on a work machine for a few months, and I have no issues with it. I just picked up a Dell laptop with Win11 Pro to replace a Win10 laptop, almost entirely because some applications indicate they won't be supported after October.

I have a NAS where all my files reside: docs, photos, etc. I really don't keep anything on my computer(s). I regularly upload photo to the NAS from my phone and then clear my phone. There are several files (photos) that just flat out don't appear in Win11 that do appear on my Win11 machine, in the NAS UI, and in my phone UI. The files are there; they just don't show up in Win11. I usually map the various folders on the NAS as network drives (X for Documents, P for Photos, etc.). But the same files are also missing by accessing the NAS by network discovery.

I've tried everything I can think of, and everything I've found online:

  • show hidden items and system files in folder properties
  • stopped OneDrive sync (I don't use it, so I disabled it and prevented it from opening on startup)
  • disconnecting shared drive, rebooting, reconnecting
  • a couple of registry edits recommended, new keys added
  • all of the solutions suggested here

I'm on a private network with all sharing enabled. I have no problem actually accessing and mapping the locations... but there are files missing. 28 of 50 files in one directory... at least 30 from another directory. I have thousands of directories and have only checked a few. There's nothing special about these files: they're *.jpegs. Some other *.jpgs and *.jpegs appear just fine.

I'm on 23H2, build 22631.5768. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 11 Join a PAN Shortcut in Windows 11?

Upvotes

Is there a way to create a shortcut to join a "Personal Area Network" (Bluetoorh Tethering) in Windows 11?

Without third-party app, or with the help of CLI batch file or PowerShell Script?

I mean create a shortcut, and by clicking on it the PC connects to the phone's BT tethering.

My Windows 11 laptop updated last night, but after i login, nothing really worked except the mouse and internet. I tried updating the drivers, but it just gave me some error. I rolled back the update, but that didn't help either, and now I'm stuck with this all. For example i can't change the screen brightness, hear the audio,or type with keyboard. But for some reason the keyboard worked in BIOS or in that Windows' menu that you get after rebooting your machine for 3 times. Info if needed: Laptop: Lenovo V14 G4 AMN. Windows 11 version: 22621.4460 if that might help. If someone can help, please write anything that can help at least a bit,i need this laptop.

Windows 11 PC freezes with black screen & CPU fans stays on, now crashes whenever I open File Explorer

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

My PC has been acting weird for a while. Earlier, it used to randomly go black screen—mouse & keyboard stop working, but CPU fans and lights stay on. I had to force restart it every time. Well it does not crash when i run in safe mode.

Now, it happens every single time I open File Explorer.

What happens: • Screen goes black • Mouse & keyboard stop responding • CPU fans stay on, PC doesn’t shut down • I have to turn off the power to restart

Specs: • Ryzen 7 5700G APU (no dedicated GPU) • 16GB RAM • Windows 11 (64-bit) OS build 26100.4946 version 24H2 • 256GB SSD (in which Windows OS)

What I’ve tried: • Disabled fast startup, sleep & hibernate • Ran SFC and DISM scans • Updated/rolled back AMD drivers • Clean boot (disabled all startup programs & services) • Disabled non-Microsoft shell extensions with ShellExView • Reset File Explorer settings • Windows Reset (Keep my files) → But PC crashes in the middle of reset, undoes the process on restart

Now I can’t even reset my PC because it keeps freezing in the middle.

Any idea what’s causing this or how to fix it?

Windows 11 Windows 10-11 update restarting taking forever

I've decided to finally upgrade from windows 10-11 and have downloaded + installed it.

After that, I have pressed the restart button to finalise the update and now it has been going on for almost an hour.

My PC has had this infinite restart issue before, where it was fixed upon me holding the power button.

I was wondering if it would be safe for me to just force shutdown without file loss. (I forgot what version I was updating to, probably the latest)

Windows 11 Difficullty connecting to wifi iphone hot spot on 2nd connection - the solution

Follow these steps:

1) Turn off the hotspot on iPhone, no need to change the hotspot password

2) Go to manage networks and select FORGET on your WIFI iPhone hotspot e.g. iPhone if your iPhone is called "iPhone"

3) You can now connect, but do not select connect automatically

Although this may seem painful, it is the only solution I have found. If people know of a better solution, please share. Happy tethering.

BTW, I did go to the Apple Genius bar when I first had iphone tethering issues, and they said I had to re-initialise the phone after the reset of the network settings did not resolve the issue.

PS It would be interesting to know if Linux users also have a similar issue.

Windows 11 ma computer turns black and suddendly it stops working

I’ve been having a strange issue with my computer. Whenever I’m playing Roblox (or any other game) while also listening to Spotify or opening other windows, my computer suddenly acts like it’s going to “explode” (without actually crashing).

What happens is:

  • The screen goes completely black for a few seconds.
  • When it comes back, Windows doesn’t work correctly anymore.
  • The start menu and apps look “black,” and my screen color filter/night light (the orange tint) gets disabled.
  • Also, if I try to click and drag to make the little blue selection square on the desktop, it looks like it “cleans” that area and reveals what’s behind it, almost like every square becomes its own mini-window.

My PC has good RAM, so I don’t think it’s a memory issue, but I don’t understand why this happens.

Has anyone experienced this before? Could it be GPU/driver related, or maybe something with Windows itself?

Any help would be appreciated!

Windows 11 Unsupported Windows 11 CPU Upgrade attempt - "A disk read error occurred after reboot.

Hi. Not too tech savvy so I might be missing details I might need to provide. I took the chance and tried to update my Windows 10 to 11 on an Unsupported CPU (I7-7700K). A lot of regrets now. I am now getting the "A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart" on boot. I have went to Advance and checked Integrated Peripherals and see the SATA Mode is AHCI Mode (MSI Bios). Is there anything I can do to go back to Windows 10 or go into Windows 11?

My computer is a Z270 Gaming M5 (MS-7A78).

I also have a SMI SM2260 - M2 which I am setting for boot priority and as for storages I have 2 different WD SATA drives and an SSD 85 I was able to connect internally for more storage space.

Any help would be appreciated.

Worst case, If I had to reinstall Windows, either 10 or 11, can I still easily access the internal storages devices and those are where my backups are.

Windows 10 Unusually high RAM usage (Win10)

I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem!

System Specs:

  • Windows 10 version 10.0.19045

  • AMD 7800x3d

  • 64gb corsair dominator 6000 ram

  • Asus rog strix x670e-e gaming wifi mobo

  • Nvidia rtx 4090

  • 3x samsung 2tb ssds 980 pros

This is my dream computer that I saved up for YEARS to build. No new hardware has been installed since the system was built. I recently (today after the issue reappeared) updated my bios to last months build (I was previously on a bios build from April of 2024). On a suggestion from discord, I re-seated all 4 of my ram sticks in a different order.

I have run a Windows Defender scan, MalwareBytes and even pulled out a trend micro housescan: all scans found 0 warnings. I installed RAMMap and ProcessExplorer to try and track down this issue since task manager was not giving me enough information.

Other recent software installations include Samsung Magician (to check the firmware version of my SSDs after a friend's same SSD crashed due to faulty firmware. Battlefield 6 Beta was installed (with anti cheat and the requirement to enable Secure Boot). The only other software I have installed has been a few games (Enshrouded, BF6 Beta, Raft and a few other smaller games from the steam client) and Vortex for mod installation (before I noticed and only used when I update mods for Valheim) and EQLogParser (after the problem was noticed and replacement for GINA and only used when I am playing EverQuest - yes I am old). My browser since the computer was built (and before) is Firefox. I am fully up to date on ALL updates (but this problem has been going on for months now)

I first noticed the issue when I was hosting an Enshrouded game for me and a few of my friends. It started giving me warnings about in game about the host instability, and a quick check of task manager showed me using most of my ram. I restarted my computer, and had no issues for a few days until it happened again.

I have since noticed that ram usage skyrockets when using World of Warcraft. I have tried manually setting it to DX12, and a few other graphical tweaks suggested on the forums to stop any kind of 'memory leak' to no avail. Ram usage also continuously grows when NOT using WoW, but not as extreme as before. After a day, or week, or even sometimes just hours, I noticed my ram usage skyrockets to 90%. Here are some screenshots:

Task Manager with WoW running

ProcessExplorer with WoW running

Task Manager without WoW running

ProcessExplorder without WoW running

Task Manager Performance Tab

I have not religiously looked at my ram usage (except to check task manager to make sure its running at EXPO speeds on startup - a habit I picked up from earlier bios versions of the new AM5 platform when expo would not always work) so I suppose it is entirely possible this problem has been on going...or perhaps isn't a problem at all.

Please, ANY help would be much appreciated!!!!

Windows XP / Older Error code ”file already exists”

Hi!

I’m having issues while using Windows XP SP3, more specifically a program that I’m trying to start. The program is an .exe file for Battlefield 1942.

When a fresh install of the game with the original CDs is complete, together with a fresh install of Windows XP SP3 on my old computer.

A prompt comes up with the classic error sound when I try to start the game, but the prompt window doesn’t appear unless I run the .exe as administrator.

It says:

”C:\DOCUME~1\USER\LOCALS~1\TEMP”

I have tried to delete all the files in the temp folder and even tried to rename them, and same prompt comes up. I have tried to re-install the game, same thing. I have tried different ways (from desktop, from install directory, via the CDs own window) to run the .exe file, same thing. I have been rebooting several times between the different tries.

I have heard that there’s is some directory, or folders that I should merge or use the CMD with some commands to solve this.

Shouldn’t the program just work without merging folders or use the cmd to make it work? Or am I missing something that I should install?
