Just started - level 8 and getting frustrated đ help?
I really want to love this game. But I keep dying at the dumbest monsters, like a water hag. Iâm trying everything - oils, hit and dodge, quen and igni, swallow potion. Then it takes forever for the game to reload. To the point where I want to just give up. I have it on the easiest setting. Iâm not a âgamerâ, but I loved Skyrim so I thought this would be a good next.

what number does the water hag have above it's health bar? If I remember rightly the health bar will show what level they are, if they are too many levels above you then don't fight them. You can always run away and do something else.
Use Quen only at the start so you always have the barrier without having to switch, make sure you're picking the right sword with the most damage from your inventory.
In the combat, be patient, wait for them to attack and then dodge - hit - move away and repeat until you get more confident where you can dodge - hit - dodge - hit - etc.....
As other said, stick to the main story and level up, stay with the game as it gets better and better and the final part is epic.

You seem to be doing everything right like dodge, using potions and oils and you are always playing on the easiest difficulty.
Maybe only use quen atm
Out of suggestions here. It shouldn't be this hard.
Maybe you are doing a quest you are not supposed to do yet. Try sticking to main quests and other quests near your level. Not something too high level.

The first paragraph of your answer is exactly how ChatGPT usually answers. Recapping what OP has already done while agreeing or disagreeing.
It was a joke.

Yeah, if youâre playing on PS4, the load times are a pain. Are you using the bestiary to figure out the monstersâ weaknesses? If yes, and youâre still struggling. Go do some quests and level up a bit. Thereâs. Putting wrong with just following the main quest for a bit to level up and then going back later and doing side quests and question marks.

Are you using the right sword? There are two, one for humans and one for monsters.

"Both swords are for monsters!"

It's not a book â silver for monsters, steel for humans (even in-game soundtracks are called this way)

Did you even saw the first cinematic trailer? (âKilling monstersâ)

Do you go for monsters that are right for your level? Have you tried lowering the overall difficulty? Do you have a proper armor and weapons? Are your weapons or armor broken? How did you spend your ability points?

If you can't kill it yet then run, find monsters that within your level. Don't overdo yourself cause you will have a hard time to enjoy the game.

I use a combination of tools at my disposal, like quen and axii, oils, etc, but my primary tool is dodging. As far as attacks, I really only use fast attack. And I use a pattern of hitting twice or thrice and stepping back with dodging.
But for your playthrough, level 8 is still relatively low, and I'm guessing you're still in white orchard? If so, don't lose steam. It'll get better, but you have to use this period to train yourself and get better at combat. Be patient, you'll get there. Once you get to Velen it gets a little better. Once you get to Novigrad, it gets much better. At least, that's how it was for me.

Use the bestiary to check what to use against each monster.
Get better equipment/repair equipment.
Use Quen to protect you, regardless of offensive signs you might also use.
Use the Gourmet ability to basically regenerate constantly.
When fighting, attacking and retreating to heal, then attack and retreat again, is a good tactic.

Feel free to go into yoursettings and set up auto-apply oils for fights. That way you don't have to keep using the oils manually.
Make sure that you are around the same level as the enemies/monsters you are fighting. If a fight is too tough, you can always run and try again later.
Make sure that your weapons are in good condition, visit an armorer or smith to repair them frequently. Also make sure that you are activating your ability points by equiping them in the 'character menu' it's not simply enough to just redeem them. you have to redeem then equip them for them to apply.

What kind of armor and swords are you using? Have you tried new, higher level gear or are you still using what you started with?

The game got significantly easier for me at level 6 or 7. I also play on death march (hard).
At level 7, i was using the gear yen gave you, armor of a thousand flowers. Since that is a full set of medium, id use the griffin skill perk as well.
The best skill perk early game is gourmet.
Spam quen, utilize buffs before venturing out like armorers workbench and swordsmiths grindstone. Maybe place of power. There is an auto apply setting for oils as well.
I tried to visit places of power asap to get skill points and only play leveled quests.
Id play on easy mode, if youre struggling.
Im level 49 now, with all grand master sets. I was pretty OP when i switched my build to signs with master griffin set. Its dumb how OP the gm set is.
I would keep grinding to about level 28. Once there, start collecting master gear diagrams, pay off runewright, deck out corvo bianco, and get extra mutations. You should be close to level 34 and be able to use master sets.
Undying is a good skill to have and might save you from dying more often.

Use lowest difficulty/pay attention to enemy level vs yours
Quen
Axxi to stun enemies
Swing twice, dodge/roll, swing twice, dodge roll, enemies get automatic counters after like 3hits

When you run around in Velen you will meet monsters that are very difficult to kill. Just turn around and run away. Come back and do that hag when you have better oils, potions and a higher level.

Loot absolutely everything in the beginning stages lol. In Crowâs Perch, scale the buildings and loot everything, if I remember rightly, there are some good weapons/armour and/or coins? Use weapons and armour suitable for your level, use your ability points⌠use Swallow to rebuild vitality as you fight, Quen, fire, lots of dodge and bolt, attack from behind, etc etc.

Do the treasure hunts to find more weapons, armour, and coins to purchase/craft weapons/armour

u/GoodCharlotte2304 22h ago
Does this help with load times?
1
u/CranberryDistinct941 21h ago
No, but it makes you lose less progress whenever you die

u/GoodCharlotte2304 21h ago
Yeah I thought that. Good suggestion for those who tend to die a lot lol.

Make sure youâve used your ability points properly, I got it wrong the first time not realising there was another page but you get potion of clearance and you can start over. You shouldnât approach enemies with red skulls above them, theyâre above your level. So long as you stick to the monster contracts that are meant for your level and avoid wandering into anything too dangerous you shouldnât really be struggling. Also make sure your equipment and armour is maintained as they lose durability overtime. Meditate often to keep your health up and donât forget to use the bombs and signs as theyâre surprisingly effective.

u/TiberianLyncas 19h ago
If a monster has a red skull next to its name, it will likely be too hard for you. You are in the early game right now so you have to be patient and take it slow. Skyrim has a completely different gameplay loop where you swing your sword around until the enemy dies and chug health potions. The Witcher is a lot more like Dark Souls. I am on death March difficulty and still get killed by packs of wolves if I am not paying attention. Also water hags are tough, they are much worse than Drowners. At your level you should not be fighting drowners. Also you didnât necessarily say that but you should go after people. Humans are the easiest enemies to kill especially with parry.

Iâm currently on level 47 and there are some monsters I gave up on at lower levels. Iâll probably go back and get them now! Keep going!

I had to shift my mindset a bit to enjoy it. If you wanna nerd out on the combat you basically wanna find treasure get diagrams craft good oils for bosses good superior or higher potions to help. Then you wanna pick what gear you want and find the diagrams for it and have it crafted(just telling you things you can work for and a bit about character progression). Your a witcher so it's on you to read the bestiary and determine how you wanna go about a fight. There's also monsters that are simply much higher or a level than you and best to avoid till later. It can be a bit overwhelming to Google one thing after the other. At the very very very least you have a fantastically written plot and story line to follow. If you have trouble at one point just continue on through the storyline. Eventually you will get gear that just makes the game easier.
