Saw my first bear ever!
It was right in front of Yosemite Falls yesterday at around 7pm.

https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/reservations.htm
A reservation will be required to drive into or through Yosemite National Park on some days from May 24 through September 1, 2025, for those driving into the park between 6 am and 2 pm as follows:
Driving through the park will also require a reservation if entering between 6 am and 2 pm. If you are planning to visit after peak hours, please do not arrive before 2 pm; vehicles blocking roads will be cited.
Reservations for all dates will be released on Recreation.gov on May 6, 2025 at 8 am PDT.
Additional reservations are available seven days before the arrival date (e.g., make a reservation for an arrival date of August 31 on August 24) at 8 am Pacific time on Recreation.gov.
If you have a reservation for one of the following, you do not need an additional reservation. You still pay the $35-per-car entrance fee upon arrival (credit card only) unless you have an annual or lifetime pass. Your reservation for in-park lodging or camping, a Half Dome permit, or a Yosemite wilderness permit allows you to enter the park 24 hours per day for the duration of your reservation or for three consecutive days (whichever is longer).
Reservations for lodging or vacation rentals outside the park and in communities other than these three do not provide access to Yosemite.

Trying to reduce duplicate posts on this as the summer season planning gears up. All other generic trip planning posts will be deleted and redirected here. Please add your suggestions.
The park announced an entry system on April 29th. See details here. On Memorial Day weekend, every day from June 15-Aug 15th, and Labor Day weekend, you will need an entry permit to drive into (or through) the park between 6a-2p. These permits go on sale May 6th, and 7 days in advance. Both waves will be very competitive. You won't need one of these permits if you have lodging or camping in the park, a wilderness permit, or Half Dome permit. See details on the linked page.
On the days with no entry reservations, you will need to just pay $35 for park entry at the gate, or have some form of annual pass. On these days, the park will likely be extremely crowded at the entrance gates and parking will be difficult at popular locations (Valley, Glacier Point). Plan to drive in early (park by 7:30-8a at the latest) and not move your car until you leave. Info on the shuttle system. You could avoid parking issues by using YARTS to enter the park.

I've been wanting to get up to Yosemite since I moved to LA about 8 years ago. Last year finally made the voyage out there.... it was totally worth it.
The roadtrip up there was pretty easy, and as soon as you pass Bakersfield it's nothing but incredible views.
I only spent about 36 hours total there from Friday to Sunday, but did a lot in that time.
Lots packed in, but great trip overall and can't wait to go back!
I filmed our trip and documented our itinerary. Would love to hear what you think, and if there are other spots I should go to next time!

Hello everybody, I hope you can help me with this one. The picture that I just added is me and my wife almost 30 years ago. We were on our way to hike half dome and I believe the waterfall in the background between us is one of the two waterfalls that you hike up the side, well on the trail up to half dome.
We would love to get another photo at this exact same spot, but I'm unsure where this is. We're planning a trip down there next year and wanted to go to this exact spot and take this exact photo. I know it's a longshot, just hoping there's somebody really familiar with Yosemite that can say I know where that photo was taken.
Thank you so much to anybody who replies. Would love to get a PIN to that exact location.

I don’t really understand the lottery email. We were granted half dome permits for today. ( we flew in late last night ). Do I need a physical Copy? If yes where can I pick it up? Email says issuing station : self issue. Any help? Before we head into the park? Thanks in advance

Hi all, I’m looking for some trails that have really amazing views but aren’t the main ones, like Mist or 4 Mile. Thinking about Clouds Rest, but anyone know any others?
All recommendations are welcome, thank you!

We are coming over from the UK and are trying to work out how to do the following one-way route on Wednesday 3rd September with the Mist Trail being closed weekdays until 3:30pm.
Glacier Point -> Panorama Trail -> Yosemite Valley
We have the one-way bus to GP booked for 8:30am from the Valley.
Is there an obvious detour for the Mist Trail section near the end of this route? Is it still worthwhile doing with the Mist Trail closure? Anything else we're missing?

We are planning a trip to Chain Lakes, and the ranger station suggests using the Chiquita trailhead instead of the Quartz Mountain trailhead due to road conditions. Has anyone been there recently and able to share their experience or thoughts?

Visited Yosemite on August 17th — just for a day, but wow… what a day! 🌲⛰️ Honestly the most breathtaking place I’ve ever seen. My family couldn’t stop smiling, and we all fell completely in love ❤️ with Yosemite 😍.
Not sure how long we’ll be in the US, but one thing’s for sure — if we get the chance, we’re definitely coming back for a few days to soak it all in properly.

Have visited Yosemite a bunch, first time at Tuolumne Meadows campground. Stayed on the new H loop and loved it. Hikes to Elizabeth Lake, Lembert Dome, and Mt Hoffman; plus trail runs through Tuolumne Meadows and into Lyell Canyon.

Business idea: The trail signs for Yosemite are so distinctive and I have learned to love them even though they are really rough around the edges (literally). I'm thinking they would be easy to make custom-to-order on a CDC then treated to rust or faux painted rust. I don't see any competitors on Etsy or elsewhere. What do you think?

Hi folks, sorry I know this has been asked before but I just wanted some clarity around my option please.
I will be visiting friends LA in January and would love to do the road trip to Yosemite and stay over for a few nights somewhere to explore the park for a couple full days
I will be in a rental and would prefer to not have to drive anywhere where I need to carry snow chains.
Coming from the LA direction is there a town etc that you would recommend I stay in, that I can get a nights sleep, then a bus or something into the park to explore and then back to the accommodation each day ?
Also if doing this what’s my hiking trials that don’t require any specialist clothing ?
Thank you all so very much and have a good one :-)

I’m about to head up to my site today and the weather report has been indicating more thunderstorm/rain than average. We are prepared for rain but obviously would like to avoid the area if road conditions are dangerous or if the campsites are flooded. Anyone up in the area already have some insight? I’ll be hitting Tioga Road, coming in from the west in the early afternoon when the hourly forecast shows the heaviest rain. Should we wait until later in the evening to drive the last leg to camp?
Thanks for any insights - it’ll be my first time camping and hiking in these conditions and I’d like to avoid being the dumb tourist that needed rescue or worse. I’m aware of all of the resources on staying below the treeline/flood zones during thunderstorms but can’t tell if today/tomorrow are extreme weather events that warrant avoiding the area completely.

Has anyone done a river float lately in the Merced? Will be in Yosemite next weekend. I see water levels are pretty low, just want to see if anyone has done the river float, or if I should make other plans. Thanks!

We’re flying into San Francisco then driving to Yosemite this week. Any cool places worth stopping by for lunch or a quick hike to stretch our legs on the drive ?

Snagged a permit back in April to hike Half Dome on Tuesday, and now it says there's possible thunderstorms in the middle of the day. Should I still attempt it? or call it off? Heres what NWS has to say as of now:
A chance of rain before 11am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 5pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Light and variable wind becoming west 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Edit: Also planning to start the hike at 3 a.m

Had the opportunity to do a four day trip for my birthday this last week! Was blown away by the sites and if anyone says August is too late in the year to go, maybe it is for the valley but I wanted to avoid crowds so it was perfect!
