Other YSK That many people with a disability consider their aides (wheelchair, etc.) an extension of themselves. You should ask before touching or moving them.

Read this article and was surprised to hear how many people struggle with this. Even if you are trying to help, you should ask first.

Same thing goes for fucking glasses. Taking them off someone because "I just wanna see what I'd look like" is fucking stupid.

... and they can’t see what they look like because they’re prescription lenses and then say, ‘how do you see out of these things?!’ or, ‘wow, you’re blind!’.

Imagine that, something designed to help me see doesn’t work for you! 🙄

‘how do you see out of these things?!’

Haha i've heard that many times. Oh if only someone knew how these 'magic' glasses work

Hol' up, hol' up, hol' up, so, you're telling me, that this thing that's designed specifically to help you see, helps you see? Wild!

or, ‘wow, you’re blind!’.

Yes this, especially if you have thick lenses. 😡 Imagine doing the same to someone who needs a walker or a hearing aid.

They would, and they do, and it's just as bad as you would think.

Yeah but I wear glasses and know this, I still want to see what someone elses glasses are like! You'll never know what you find out. I tried on some old rx sunglasses of my moms just for fun and I could see perfect! Or I'll try on my husbands and make fun of him.

I honestly don’t mind if people do that to me but if practically never happens so eh

depends on how close the person is. acquaintances, nah, but friends and family, sure. knock yourself out.

I've worn glasses since I was 3 (I'm 22 now), and I can count on one hand the number of times this has happened to me, and it still pisses me off every time I think about it. On the other hand, I've had loads of people ask me if they can try on my glasses, and I almost always say yes. I actually enjoyed letting people try on my glasses when I was younger, because then they got some idea of how everything looks to me without glasses and it made me feel less weird about wearing them.

I like to keep my glasses SPOTLESS and especially fingerprintless

Which some people cannot understand when trying them on

u/tydestra Jul 20 '20

People who grab glasses by the lens are savages.

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Finally someone gets it. Seems like even though sometimes I won’t see them touch the lenses, they just do it telepathically or something.

I’ve had to do that with my sons teacher. He has super duper expensive thin lenses. I’ve had to ask him to give me his glasses, and tell his teacher to look through them because she kept taking them off him and only let him wear them during reading/writing. (He wears them all the time now)

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Just where in the hell does she get off telling a child when to wear their glasses?? Ugh abled people confuse the fuck out of me.

1

u/VixenRoss Jul 20 '20

He was 6 at the time, so I suppose she was trying to make sure they don’t get broken/lost etc. I also took the consultant letter in for good measure. He also sleeps in them. (He says it’s to see his dreams! Lol.) we have to take them off him at night. He’s 9 now.

If I had a fucking dollar...

In middle school I punched a kid for grabbing my glasses of my face.

3

u/ughidktho Jul 20 '20

A guy yanked my glasses off as a way of flirting with me. I hadn’t even spoken to the guy- we were just in the same group of people dancing at a club. Was pretty annoyed because I’d just driven to the store that day to get them tightened

u/tydestra Jul 20 '20

Did he get his dating tips from a middle schooler?

3

u/swinging_ship Jul 20 '20

My roommate and I were just talking about automatic triggers resulting in me hurting you 1. Spit on me. 2. Touch my glasses

3

u/Clashmains_2-account Jul 20 '20

I find this only to be acceptable with persons you know.

1

u/tydestra Jul 20 '20

Still ask though, taking them off without asking is what irks me and other glasses wearers.

1

u/Clashmains_2-account Jul 20 '20

Oh yeah, of course asking. They know how to do it themselve.

Joining in on the topic of glasses. Luckily, I haven't had many people grabbing my glasses from my face but I am extremely triggered by someone moving my glasses. I am not exactly blind but my field of clear vision is about 5-10cm without glasses. When I put my glasses down and someone moves them it takes me more time than I am comfortable with to find them. Or when someone folds my glasses together. Argh!

Ahoy pawzypaw! Nay bad but me wasn't convinced. Give this a sail:

How about only taking them when I know they're not using it. For example, when it's on a table. Does that count?

I do this all the time and now I feel guilty af.

5

u/tydestra Jul 20 '20

If you ask beforehand, then its not so bad. But if you snatched them up without asking, then that's hella rude.

2

u/StrawberriesNCream43 Jul 20 '20

Please don't do that unless you've asked and gotten explicit permission.
