Other YSK That many people with a disability consider their aides (wheelchair, etc.) an extension of themselves. You should ask before touching or moving them.

Read this article and was surprised to hear how many people struggle with this. Even if you are trying to help, you should ask first.

FYI: "aides" are the people who assist/help; "aids" are the tools that people use.

u/LtSoundwave Jul 19 '20

That is actually very helpful, thanks.

u/likenothingis Jul 19 '20

No prob! It gets confusing when you start talking about the aides who are moving the aids. ;)

u/Tidial Jul 19 '20

Even more confusing when you add AIDS to the equation...

u/KaizDaddy5 Jul 19 '20

Aha I commented before seeing this.

South Park does a pretty hilarious episode with this

Edit: it's "jared has aides" S6E1

44

u/Jagasaur Jul 19 '20

Did they ever do a follow-up episode after he went to jail?

I'm like 5 seasons behind.

33

u/KaizDaddy5 Jul 19 '20

Uhh not really but they did do some jokes about it

There's a time when Cartman fights the PC frat, and he sends in all this "un-PC" stuff in.

(Like taco launchers to attract pregnant Mexican women, who then have babies which attracted Jared)

u/sne7arooni Jul 19 '20

In one of the video games they do a boss fight

He's in the Fractured but Whole video game

2

u/AxiomaticAlex Jul 20 '20

They did in the superhero game... He's a boss... Pretty fun one too.

Idk. It might be the same episode, bc Jared proposes in that one and has a similar encounter

1

u/sullensquirrel Jul 20 '20

First thing I thought of

1

u/BlackCurses Jul 20 '20

With philidephia cream cheese

23

u/_ssh Jul 19 '20

I need my aides aid to aid me with my AIDS

2

u/Usedupallmygiveadamn Jul 20 '20

I will aid you and your aide by bringing you some ade- Fresh squeezed lemonade.

2

u/nibiyabi Jul 19 '20

Or the Ayds dietary supplement.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

When I was a kid in the 80s, we had my father’s quadriplegic friend living with us for a while. He always had aides coming in and helping. Also, the TV news was always talking about AIDS. I was very confused about it all.

1

u/koltrui Jul 19 '20

Aides with AIDS aids.

1

u/Toledojoe Jul 19 '20

Remember the diet product AYDS?

1

u/ButtplugBurgerAIDS Jul 19 '20

AIDS is the syndrome stemming from HIV. YSK

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Especially, when heard and not read.

2

u/Crippley_McGimperson Jul 19 '20

I got enough already without the AIDS.

2

u/MrBlurby Jul 20 '20

Or when you talk about aides with AIDS who are moving aids

1

u/likenothingis Jul 20 '20

... And managing their weight with Ayds!

1

u/iwillbecomehokage Jul 19 '20

just listen for the 'e'

39

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

[deleted]

3

u/Saiky0u Jul 19 '20

Though it's unclear whether they consider them an extension of themselves

2

u/goodbyekitty83 Jul 19 '20

Also be ayds is a pill to help with appitite and AIDS is a disease.

1

u/bigmikey69er Jul 20 '20

If only wheelchairs had some sort of mechanism which prevented the wheels from moving.

Was there a need to post this?

-23

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Was there a need to reply? Or did you just want to?

8

u/yourlocalcryptid0 Jul 19 '20

Was there a need to be an insufferable dick? Get off your high horse.

-14

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Nah I think I'll stay on it and take a shit all over you while I'm up here. Thanks

3

u/idiomaddict Jul 19 '20

I wanted to understand your thought process. That’s what an answer looks like.

-3

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

I'm sorry who are you? Nobody? Cool thanks for playing

4

u/T0xicati0N Jul 19 '20

You havin a rough one, mate?

-2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

3

u/T0xicati0N Jul 19 '20

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Well why didn’t you fix the title?

81

u/ennichan Jul 19 '20

I wouldn't like someone to move around my aides as well.

44

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

I also won’t touch your AIDS.

2

u/pr1ntscreen Jul 19 '20

Come on, just give it a kiss...

2

u/ripeart Jul 19 '20

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

2

u/GoldFishPony Jul 20 '20

But I got that just to share

72

u/KaizDaddy5 Jul 19 '20

There's a south park episode that makes light of this mixup.

AIDS is also thrown in there cuz, well, it's south park.

22

u/alekbalazs Jul 19 '20

Does the episode address the aids/aides mixup? I only remember the town getting confused over an aides/AIDS mixup.

14

u/KaizDaddy5 Jul 19 '20

As far as I remember it's just AIDS and aides.

But I feel like every time I rewatch an episode I find a new hidden message or interpretation, so who knows

1

u/locks_are_paranoid Aug 08 '20

That episode predicted the downfall of Jared.

1

u/AaronBrownell Jul 19 '20

Same for me, I rmb it that way too.

"Everyone should have aides. Yes, in particular the children"

11

u/BilboT3aBagginz Jul 19 '20

Jared from subway has AIDS‽

5

u/V1k1ng1990 Jul 19 '20

No he has aides

1

u/AerMarcus Jul 19 '20

Also, similarly, Trevor Noah and Pres Obama's meeting apparently

17

u/Hinkil Jul 19 '20

Well, don't just touch aides without asking either...

15

u/NoCurrency6 Jul 19 '20

I thought I was going crazy reading that title and saying ‘uh you should ask the aide if you can touch them, not the person they’re helping’

6

u/maymays01 Jul 19 '20

Or move them - people get very crotchety when they find you've misplaced their aide in a location they don't usually store him/her.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

everyone should have aids

3

u/UtmostPants Jul 19 '20

2 ysk’s in 1!

4

u/TenSecondsFlat Jul 19 '20

Fucking English, lol

TIL

2

u/maymays01 Jul 19 '20

I read the title and was wondering how the aides felt about this...

2

u/Zap__Dannigan Jul 19 '20

Fair enough, but I'm still going to ask before I move a disabled person's aide into my closet.

2

u/raspberrykraken Jul 19 '20

"I'm sorry ma'am but you can't park your Aides here."

"Don't you dare touch Steve! He's helping me out."

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Lol thanks for posting that because I immediately thought of the person and was a little concerned first, about how disabled people view their human helpers, and then secondly, my own grammar was compromised.

2

u/gorcorps Jul 19 '20

In that case... People should REALLY ask permission before touching their aides

2

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

You should probably still ask before you touch someone’s caretaker.

2

u/Sardukar333 Jul 19 '20

This is the best FYI I've seen in weeks.

1

u/likenothingis Jul 19 '20

Aw, thanks! Your username is pretty danged awesome, by the by.

2

u/_welcome Jul 20 '20

i knew this because of pokemon. professor oak's aides :)

parents, video games aren't for dumb kids. they are great motivators and tools in developing vocabulary in a variety of contexts beyond school

1

u/likenothingis Jul 20 '20

But did you accept aid from Professor Oak's aides?

1

u/_welcome Jul 20 '20

no i accepted dirty money for an inside job with team rocket

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Thank you English language.

2

u/inselfwetrust Jul 20 '20

Why does our language have to be like this? It’s like Fiancé and fiancée

0

u/likenothingis Jul 20 '20

Because English has borrowed / incorporated / stolen words from many languages. Languages are great!

(FYI: "fiancé" is masculine and refers to the male person who is engaged; "fiancée" is feminine and refers to the female person who is engaged. :)

2

u/ingululu Jul 20 '20

Yeah! Lol. I was like who touches and moves the care assistant without asking? Definitely a weird move.

2

u/Spiffinit Jul 20 '20

Some people are total tools.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 20 '20

Hey, sorry if I ask something stupid but english isn't my first language! Is there a difference between their pronunciation?

2

u/likenothingis Jul 20 '20

I would say that they are (Canadian English); they are homophones; words that sound the same but have different meanings.

I wonder if the pronunciation is the same elsewhere?

2

u/PM_Me_Syntax_Papers Aug 16 '20

So can I keep touching aides?

1

u/likenothingis Aug 16 '20

Only if you can PM me some morpheme papers.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

And also a disease but let's just put that away...

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

"Aides" is french.

1

u/likenothingis Jul 19 '20

Merci, oui, j'en suis consciente.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Donc c'est aussi un mot anglais ou pas du tout?

1

u/likenothingis Jul 19 '20

C'est un mot en anglais. Emprunté du français, mais tout de même un « vrai » mot en anglais.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Aids is acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

1

u/likenothingis Jul 19 '20

No, that's "AIDS". Or, as it's not called, "HIV/AIDS".

1

u/bigbonerdaddy Jul 19 '20

My doctor said I have aids but I never got a tool for it, does it like come in the mail or something?

1

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '20

Jared from subway used aids to lose weight.

1

u/RTXguy Jul 20 '20

I mean you should definitely ask before touching someone.

1

u/tdw91 Jul 20 '20

I thought you got AIDs from HIV.

1

u/willowsonthespot Jul 20 '20

And Ayds was a diet chocolate.

1

u/Zebulon_Flex Jul 20 '20

I have aids😞 Hearing aids! 🤣

1

u/apsgreek Jul 20 '20

I was very confused at first

1

u/magintz Jul 20 '20

Two YSK for the price of one :)

1

u/an_autistic_jew Jul 20 '20

Jared has Aides

1

u/WeakMeal Jul 20 '20

How about AIDS?

1

u/LoneInterloper17 Jul 20 '20

What about the aides who gave me AIDS

1

u/thisidntpunny Jul 20 '20

And AIDS is the cost of boogietime.

1

u/LexiFjor Sep 16 '20

Tbh you probably shouldn't move either without permission...

0

u/str8killinitdawg Jul 19 '20

Jared from subway had aides. Thats how he lost so much weight.
