I've read the FAQ & Rules Schedule conflict

Hi! unrepresented actor here! im doing a shakespeare show unpaid that rehearses once a week, but was offered to audition for a cool short tv/film project that pays. the problem is it conflicts with the lead up to my show. pretty standard dillemma. it's tough because i'm really trying to do the acting thing full time but wanted to help my pals out!

I think i'd be really letting these shakespeare people down, the money would be great from this tv/film project but isn't a large sum by any means. I feel conflicted because I want to push myself to get better credits and build up from there and I have that opportunity except i'd be ditching a show i'm in. idk I guess I know the "right" thing to do is stick by my pals but I wanna consider it anyway.

Honest answer?

You’ve agreed to the Shakespeare and as such should stick to it - it’s professional before mentioning you’ve already agreed to it

Do you mean the audition takes place on one of these days or the filming? The audition I’d say you can get excused for- filming well that’s a different matter I’d say.

yes I think I agree that scumming my friends is no way to operate while trying to be professional I guess i was just enamored by the tv/film oppurtunity and to have actual lines and stuff. it's more in line to what i've been trying to accomplish as of late. to answer your question, the filming of the part takes place the one weekend of the show (horrible timing) I have not accepted the audition yet and I may not at all. anyways thank you for your input!

Always stick to the commitment. One thing that travels fast is how you are professionally. Even if you take the short and it's amazing... the people you left behind will always remember you not finishing what you started. And in this industry... your reputation is everything. Someone's always watching.

You say it conflicts with the lead up… do you mean tech? Cause if so, they can work around you missing tech. If it’s a dress rehearsal or preview, could just audition and say you have a hard out at whatever time you need to leave to get to the show in time.

I would do the audition for the practice anyway, but if offered the role I would see the conflict between the performance and filming dates and tell the film producers "Sorry, I can't as I have a conflict with the film dates—I have a prior commitment to perform that weekend. Let me know if the film dates change, though, as I'd really like to work with you."

Film dates often change for mysterious reasons (for student films, incompetent management is a common one)—no need to shut yourself out of the project pre-emptively.
