Food Review Bagel Tour Stop 2: Casper Fermentables

Same criteria. Plain bagel, plain cream cheese, and however their version of bagel & lox/smoked salmon are prepared. Served open face, and the first bagel had a great outer texture, nice “crust”, very chewy bite. Lots of toppings, and very big tomato slices. Almost felt that hid the lox flavor underneath. Most of the onion and capers fell off. By the time I got to the second half, moisture content had gotten into the bagel and made it much tougher to bite through and tear apart. Still very chewy, and I think because it was open face, I got more contents than in sandwich form. One of my favorite iced coffees. Was there about 11am, and while they had a good crowd, it didn’t feel like order took too long to arrive. Dined in. $16. Compared to Doughies at the same price, felt the flavor of the ingredients came through more, but liked the doughies bagel better.

Anyone having horrible stomach issues for days after eating sprouts this week? I know these were locally grown.

Best bowl of Chilaquiles I’ve had in town and the only thing that me and two other people I don’t live with ate together this week. (Yes, there were sprouts on top lol) We’ve all been in tmi distress since the next morning with no end in sight. I have heard before that sprouts are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria, but I’m wondering if this might be a touch of listeria even.

Restaurant Opening De diez coming to South Lamar!

Post image

I just got back to Austin after some traveling and I’m thrilled to see that Taqueria de diez looks like it’s getting ready to open a location right on South Lamar, where Aviary used to be.

Though I’ll miss Aviary (RIP WATERMELON SALAD), the tacos at de diez are fantastic and I’m happy I won’t have to go downtown to eat them!

NADC was overpriced and overrated. $17 for a small double burger!?!

$17 for a smash burger? With thousand island dressing? Why the hype because it says "Wagyu" in the food description? Genuinely shocked that people line up down the street for this nonsense. Fries were $5 and ok.

Has anyone been? I think it's relatively new. Mexicans make the best fried rice! They said it's a buffet but they serve you.

Hey Austin Fam!!, I’ve been building my little bakery called Cozy Crumbs by Jae. Right now my menu includes things like chocolate chip cookies, seasonal flavors (like Apple Spice Snickerdoodle), and cinnamon twists.

I bake everything from scratch in small batches, and I’m getting ready for my very first farmers market next month “September 21st” in Georgetown 🎉. It’s been a mix of exciting + nerve-wracking, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.

Here’s a peek at what I’ve been making — would love any feedback from fellow bakers, foodies, or small biz owners!

Great burgers (the bacon is so crispy!!), hand-battered onion rings, chili cheese fries that will make all of your stoner dreams come true, crispy tacos, and their lil wingettes & drumettes are soo{o good. And there's a goddamn drive thru!

Best counter/bar lunch in Austin?

I like a solo lunch at a bar or counter, looking to add more to my rota. Usual suspects:

  • Counter Cafe(s)
  • 24 Diner
  • Capital Grille
  • Murray's Tavern (Gourmands was my #1)
  • Quickie Pickie
  • June's All Day

What else do y'all recommend?

Thai Cuisine

Went basic today and tried their Pad Thai for the first time, and it was excellent. Usually alternate between their Panang Curry and Crab Fried Rice. Their salad bar is free with a regular entree, and is one of the best lunch values in North Austin. Fills up fast, get there before 11:45.

Restaurant recommendation for seafood and meat

I got 2 friends coming into Austin and we are planning on going out to dinner. One eats Seafood , but not meat. The other eats meat, but not seafood. Any restaurant recommendations near downtown that have good options (apps and mains) for both?

Lick Ice Cream cost more at the shop than in grocery store????

We just saw a movie at Alamo and on way out stopped at Lick and got a pint to take home. It was nearly $12 for a pint. ????? At the grocery store it is a little over $8 - which is still a lot but we were right there by the Lock shop and thought we’d splurge and get some to take home. $12 in the Lick store and $8.50 at the grocery for the exact same thing??????? Why?

Any mushy tasting menus in town?

Weird question, but my partner recently had surgery that only allows them to eat very soft mushy foods. I know most tasting menus in town are accommodating to dietary habits, but does anyone know of a restaurant that is that committed where they could make a menu of just mushy stuff?

Mama Betty’s Mexican Opening on Burnet - Thoughts?

Any opinions? Looks like it is the second location of a place that started in Cedar Park. This new location will be pretty close to me - wondering if it is worth checking out when it opens.

Lynny’s Diner

12th and Chicon is a about to get the cutest queer owned diner/coffee shop. It looks like they have some sort of alcohol license too (C’mon Sunday Brunch!) Not sure when they are opening because I read on social media that they are still fundraising for the build out. Hopefully not as long as Rio Rita, it’s sad that place never opened up.

Any News on Mezcal And Salt on Montopolis?

Place has been being built for like 5 years now. They did plumbing to the street a few months back. Still no movement. It seems like an expensive build out to just abandon, though, so I'm wondering.

There absolutely no reason an 18" pizza from ESP can be close to $40 when Home Slice's most expensive 18" is $32.50. Home Slice is top tier and ESP is B tier at thier BEST.

Someone tell me I'm wrong and back your response up with sources in MLA format.

Is Home Slice the best value in town for an Italian sub?

This is about 2-3 meals worth of sandwiches for a little under $30 and it’s arguably the best Italian in town. Name a better deal for an Italian.

On a trip this summer I had an amazing Italian chopped salad. I am not typically a salad person but now I am on the hunt for an amazing Italian chopped salad here in Austin. Where do you guys recommend I start this quest?

I know this'll be unpopular but I don't like Cabo Bob's chips

They are really greasy and I am not a big fan of the thick cut. Everything else is great but their chips aren't good.
