He is a Maasai, they're not scared of Lions.

Big cats also hate self-confident creatures approaching them aggressively. It confuses them to see that they are potentially the prey and not the predator.

A tourist telling a local how to live their life. Yikes.
52
u/highoncharacters 6d ago
People love spouting cliches any chance they get lol. She just remarked "you are a crazy man" and chuckled. Where did anyone get "telling a local how to live their life" from this?

She sounded very American....God damn it lady this is why people hate us
41
u/TheGreatTao 6d ago
That accent didn't sound one bit American to me.
5
u/pooeygoo 6d ago
It wasn't. And the other person saying "they hate us" is meant to give immunity to criticism which is very annoying
1
u/BaskininRobins 6d ago
There was a video of a girl and a guy. The girl said something along the lines of "the moon is bigger than the sun"
The comments were talking about how stupid Americans were. She had an Aussie accent, and their flag was in the video. It was really ironic

First I was going to ask why would he bother chasing off the lion if the cow was dead? Why not let the lion finish it's meal?
Then I read the comments and I realized that this man probably needed that cow to feed his family. So I can totally understand why he did it. I love reddit university

In most parts of Africa livestock is used as currency too. Also for status.
In south Africa, for exampe, Labola is still a very important custom.
From google: "Labola," also spelled Lobola, refers to the traditional South African marriage custom of a groom's family paying bridewealth to the bride's family, often in livestock or cash, as a symbol of gratitude for raising the bride and a sign of the groom's capability to provide for a family.
I lived in Mozambique for a few years. If you hit and kill a goat with your car you are in for an interesting week of meetings with elders and shit bartering for a fair price for that goat. You don't even get to keep the thing.
Don't fuck with livestock in Africa even if you are a lion.

23.000 Lions left in the Wild. 1.5 Billion Humans in Africa. Yes totally acceptable to steal food from almost extinct Animals.

u/wukwukwukwuk 6d ago
How would he know the cow was dead, he arrived on foot.
3
u/kleosailor 6d ago
Idk it looks pretty dead to me. A live cow would probably still be trying to struggle for it's life.

Lion wanted no beef from that man.
9
u/UnprovenMortality 6d ago
Technically it was his beef though
2
u/Hendrix6927 6d ago
True. All we know is that the lion had the beef first. I can't assume it was the mans beef. Could have been anyone's beef.

u/Virtuous_Malevolence 6d ago
Bet he loved that those guys just sat there and filmed.
32
u/Xi547 6d ago
What are they supposed to do tho lol.
Provoke the lion? The lion does not concern itself with white people shit.
5
u/Virtuous_Malevolence 6d ago
Not sit around acting like they're filming a nature documentary while watching a predator kill someone's livestock?
Dude went at a lion with a machete over a cow. It's clearly his livelihood, he's not going to be happy people were there who did nothing but watch, regardless of whether they could actually do anything or not.

u/Xi547 6d ago
I'm pretty sure the tourists are not to involved themselves with the wildlife in any way in these safaris.

u/MarteloRabelodeSousa 5d ago
It's a cow that belongs to a person, it's not really "wildlife", it's not a zebra or something like that.
But yeah, I wouldn't interfere either

u/Vemendu 6d ago
You were asked "what were they supposed to do?", and instead of answering you deflected with what they shouldn't do. Still didn't say what they should've done

I'd be willing to bet he was notified by the drivers/guides in the car in the first place, so yeah, in my equally speculative scenario he probably is glad they were there to tell him.

u/dr3adlock 1d ago
Lions tend to crush their victims windpipe asap so it was likely already dead despite still showing signs of life.

That's the persons families meal for the next 4 to 5 months. I would do the same.

I had a friend who was Maasai. He only carried a short spear, knife and flashlight.
He could effectively control (within reason) any animal encounter except one: hippos.
After watching him scare off an ornery Cape Buffalo with the flashlight I asked him what he would do if we are between a hippo and it’s water.
He deadpanned “we will die.”
Lions weren’t even on his list of animals that he is concerned about.
I hope whatever world is next that I get to see him again. He was a good friend and a kind man.

If that is his cow, that could be his entire livelihood and this sheltered woman is like "You're a crazy man lol."
That's like the equivalent of her losing her job but worse since he can't just get another cow if he's poor.

u/Gym_Rat222 6d ago
City People just have no idea. Their complete ignorance to the laws of nature is astounding.
2
u/Gsquatch55 6d ago
Maasai are part of the wildlife too
1
u/NeverNice87 5d ago
They are part of the Problem. 23.000 Lions left in the Wild and 2.100.000 Maasai people.
Imagine its their Ritual to kill a Lion. That would mean no Lion left on this Planet. Yes good idea to let them do their thing. Dont protect the Wild life. We are not enough Humans on this Planet. We need MORE!
1
u/Gsquatch55 5d ago
If only the maasai killed the lions then they wouldn’t even put a dent in the population, it’s human encroachment, poaching and idiot Americans with more money than sense that go to bag a lion for their trophy collection. The maasai with a spear is not the problem even if everything else I said is bullshit.
1
u/NeverNice87 5d ago
You have a big Math problem...there are 2,1 Million Maasais and only 23000 Lions! The Maasai can pretty much completely wipe out all Lions on this Planet.
The Maasai have been largely stopped from killing lions through conservation efforts and cultural shifts, such as the Lion Guardians program.. otherwise we wouldnt have any left. The Government had to step in. They are a Problem.
1
u/Gsquatch55 5d ago
You have a massive logics problem. The number of lions is currently less than the Maasai because of other factors that contribute to killing lions as well as Maasai. If only the Maasai killed lions throughout history then there still wouldn’t be a problem. Mankind is a cunt, Maasai are just doing what Maasai have been doing since the beginning. If mankind wound its neck in and stopped raping and pillaging the planet of its beings and resources then a Maasai chasing off a lion or killing a few wouldn’t even be worth the conversation.

I dont get why so many got triggered by calling someone crazy for running against a lion?
1
u/Medium-Turquoise 5d ago
Right? And also, have people really never heard the word crazy being used in a non-pejorative sense before?

Visited the Serengeti a few years ago, including a Maasai village. Within five minutes of our guide, confidently telling us that the Maasai were no longer allowed to kill lions preying on their cattle, I had a tribesman trying to sell me lions teeth for USD$20 each.

Imagine this same sight, 300k years ago, the first human hunting parties running at you with their spears, the animal outruns them, but they keep coming, till it gets no breath left. Humans had a hell of courage, while not having much else.

You said, "Maasai?" His whole lineage is nothing but lion killing. Ain't no lion messing with the Maasai.
0
u/NeverNice87 5d ago
Yeah cool dudes.. there are 2.100.000 of them in Africa and only 23.000 Lions. Yed let them do their thing and completely Exterminate all Lions on this Planet.
1
u/hdubfour 5d ago
The Maasai don’t kill lions for sport, like some white folk love to do. Only out of necessity.
1
1
u/Agreeable_Raisin2184 5d ago
If what you're trying to say is true, then there wouldn't be any lions left. Long before you and I would know anything about lions. The Maasai people didn't just pop up recently. There's centuries old of the two coexisting. I'm pretty sure ancient Maasai people had deep respect for lions and carried on that tradition of respect throughout generations.

the lions are probably conditioned to be afraid of those tribesmen. how many generations has this been happening? im all but certain a dude with a spear could probably kill a lion one on one.
1
u/HarlequinRasbora 4d ago
Fun fact... there are way to many cows in the masai mara now that the communities get money from the lodges and no longer need to trade in cows...

I love how african tribe people just treat lions like annoying cats, like how we get mad at our housecat for stealing a bit of chicken off our plate.

There's a long history between the Maasai and lions giving them a wide berth. Worth a search.

Normally I see people complain about the inhumane treatment of farm animals, but complain about protecting them from being eaten alive is a new one.
2
-10
u/Icy-Squirrel6422 6d ago
They seem to get a kick out of watching someone eat someone alive. Otherwise, why didn't they chase the lion away themselves? You could have just honked your horn. This is complete nonsense.

You fucking sat there and watched another animal be eaten alive? That's fucking horrible. Yeah, nature is nature, but just chillin there watching the most brutal death imaginable is un-fucking-hinged.

It’s amazing that the guy didn’t seem to have to do too much to scare that lion off. It’s hard to see, but it looks like the lion started running off well before the man got anywhere close enough to strike. The vehicles appear to have been closer too the lion then the man was able to get
