First pitch was 7:05 local time, that’s half an hour after his bedtime

92

Is that 7 minutes and 5 seconds for the fastball to get to home plate?

98

u/Philip_Marlowe Chicago Cubs Jul 23 '25

Dude still throws 90. I'm surprised his arm doesn't come off with the ball.

52

u/Worldd Philadelphia Phillies Jul 23 '25

A little bit of his fingers come off in dust form every time he releases, it helps to blind the batters.

Strength is one of the last things an athlete loses due to age.

2

u/IAmBecomeTeemo New York Yankees Jul 23 '25

Sure, but pitching velocity isn't merely a function of strength. It relies a lot on flexibility, and efficient transfer of energy through the kinetic chain. You lose flexibility as you age, and accumulated injuries from decades of playing can harm that efficiency.

Rich Hill and Justin Turner just faced off, totalling a combined age of 85. Is this an MLB record, or did Jamie Moyer or some other old guy face off against another very old guy?

27

u/Pool_With_No_Ladder New York Yankees Jul 23 '25 edited Jul 23 '25

When Satchel Paige was 59, he faced 33-year-old Eddie Bressoud, a combined age of 92. A few other guys appeared in games beyond age 50, so if any of them faced a 40-something that might be the record.

Edit: Nick Altrock at age 58 batted against 37-year-old Rube Walberg, a combined age of 95. It was the last day of the 1933 season and Altrock, a pitcher who had last pitched in 1924, got one pinch-hit at-bat so I think it was some kind of gimmick.

37

u/Antithesys Minnesota Twins • MVPoster Jul 23 '25

For non-gimmicks, Julio Franco (48, almost 49) faced Roger Clemens (44, almost 45) on 6/15/2007, so combined age of over 92.5. Best I found.

6

u/Wings81 Minnesota Twins Jul 23 '25

Debut was four days before this year's youngest MLB player was born.

(Didier Fuentes, Braves P)

Someone's probably already done this; but, we can get from 2025 all the way back to 1986 with just Hill and Maddux (who started Hill's debut); and, since Nolan Ryan started the game Maddux debuted in....albeit for the opposing team, this is honestly a pretty amazing string.

9

u/Antithesys Minnesota Twins • MVPoster Jul 23 '25

Nolan Ryan's debut didn't include any longtime pitchers in the same way, but he faced Eddie Mathews whose career goes back to 1952. And in his second inning of work he faced Henry Aaron, who hit a grounder right back to Ryan.

He is always sweating like a whore in church when he is on the mound

13

u/Tbplayer59 Los Angeles Angels Jul 23 '25

I want people to remember this when they try to argue that MLB should expand.

Guy’s got more time in the clubhouse shitter than most guys have in the clubhouse.

12

u/MashedPotatoesDick Los Angeles Angels Jul 23 '25

As long as he pitches, I can claim I'm younger than an active MLB player. Thank you, Dick Mountain.

Watch him get traded at the deadline to set the record

Which deadline contenders are new to him?

5

u/Z3130 Boston Red Sox Jul 23 '25

Toronto, Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Texas, Houston. I’m sure that I’m missing another one too.

Thanks. While not every team there is looking for a starter, but at his price tag/risk even they might be willing so yeah his options are open.

He hasn’t played for the cards either right? They’re only 3.5 out of the wc

11

u/blyzo Chicago Cubs Jul 23 '25

On the radio broadcast an announcer said he threw a changeup at 88, but then was corrected by his partner that nope that was his fastball.

9

u/hippyhippyjayjay New York Mets Jul 23 '25

his mom was pregnant with him in the 1970s and he’s pitching in 2025.  love it.

7

u/ecdc05 Boston Red Sox Jul 23 '25

More fun watching him right now than the Red Sox tbh

7

u/jackrabbitslim67 Jul 23 '25

Love this guy. King of the Hill.

7

u/ledzep14 Chicago Cubs Jul 23 '25

I was 11 years old and in 5th grade when he debuted. I’m now 31 with 4 kids 😂

Modern day Jamie Moyer!

8

Omfg it's happened!

7

u/Suspicious-Sleep5227 Seattle Mariners Jul 23 '25

I’d hate to be the manager to take him out of the game. I’d probably get an earful of “get off my mound!” with Clint Eastwood vibes.

u/Sturmgeist781 Boston Red Sox Jul 23 '25 edited Jul 23 '25

Pretty cool to see him still in the league.

Edit: Posted an ERA of 1.80 across 5 innings.

can we get a 40+ league that plays in the big league stadiums when the real team is away? And no PED testing...

u/DominicB547 More flair options at /r/baseball/w/flair! Jul 23 '25

a 5 year since retired league 30 games a year at every ballpark...maybe 60 if they do two days in each city.

We used to have that, back when they didn't make much in their careers so they would barnstorm and just keep playing on top of working real jobs in the winter.

Looks like the actor Chris Cooper, who's actually from KC.

2

u/gardtone9991 Jul 23 '25

Yeah, the pocket sand he picked up in Egypt when he was there watching the pyramids being built

2

u/scobbysnacks1439 St. Louis Cardinals Jul 23 '25

He's now been a part of half of the teams in the league. Here's to hoping he gets one more shot with a different team next season to have actually PLAYED for half the league.

You can’t get charged for a mound visit if it’s a wellness check
