His last statement seemed like a quiet farewell. Rest in peace.

So, so true. Still, what the fuck, man? This one hits hella close to home.
Being of little league age on the Oregon coast in the late 90's, when I couldn't catch Mariners games I was feasting on Cubs broadcasts on WGN. I grew a great affinity for many Cubs players during this time, but none greater than the affinity I had for Ryno (except maybe Rookie Kerry Wood?)
RIP and absolutely fuck the fucking fuck out of cancer.

I moved to Oregon and have met a lot of Cubs fans thanks to WGN. It’s crazy that owners don’t get that making games available that it builds long term value and lifelong fans. Ryne was my favorite player as a kid thanks to WGN.

I came here to say this, briefly met him and his wife a little over a decade at a steakhouse in Philadelphia.
This entire thread is remarkably different from the Pete Rose thread. Ryno was truly a class act.

I got to meet him at his house once when I was a kid. My step uncle coached his kid in little league. Signed a ball for each of us. Talked with my dad for a good 20 mins while the ladies toured his home. Very nice guy. He seemed very humble.

Diagnosed last January, proclaimed cancer free in August, cancer returns December, becomes terminal around the summer.
It breaks my heart when families go through this. It's just so cruel.
43
u/PDXPuma 29d ago
Sadly with this kind of cancer you don't beat it. I'd wager the family knew the real numbers, I know when Mom passed from it she didn't tell a lot of people the real numbers because they treated her differently.

My most favorite Cubs memory isn’t even a game or a specific play.
1987, 15 years old, I catch a Cubs/Mariners spring training game in Scottsdale at the M’s park. We have seats directly above the Cubs dugout.
Mid-game I realize you can nearly peer around the corner of the edge of the dugout. Can’t see any faces, but you can see hands and arms.
I take off my hat and dangle it around the dugout wall. A white hand snatches it.
10 seconds later the same hand reaches around the wall and hands me the hat.
“Ryne Sandberg #23”
“Shawon Dunston”
I was flabbergasted. Ryno snatched, signed, and had Shawon also sign my hat.
Ryno was already my favorite Cub. That just elevated it.
RIP Ryno.

I've been a Cardinals fan for 35 years, but for a brief moment, I started as a fan of Ryne and the Cubs. I was 6/7 when I first was really becoming aware of MLB and while my dad was a lifelong Cardinals fan, we were living in Cubs territory, so likely from peer pressure of other kids at school, I became a Cubs fan first. And I remember my first pack of baseball cards. 1991 Topps and I got a Ryne Sandberg.

Awful. Any 80s kid who discovered the sport knew Ryno as one of the sports’ best players and it seemed like that was the case forever. He was way too young and it’s so incredibly sad that the heroes of my childhood are starting to go.
