Grandpa took me to a Cedar Rapids Kernels game in 2007 when he started coaching at Peoria to get his autograph. Clearly my grandpa wanted the autograph more than me, but that started my soft-side for the Cubs when they aren't playing us
I saw him manage in Peoria (my hometown minor league team - doesn’t matter if they’re Cubs or Cards affiliates). My dad, also a Cards fan, was like a little kid every time the Chiefs came up to bat and he could see Ryno coach third. My dad told Ryne Sandberg stories the whole game with the same enthusiasm as the Lous Brock and Ozzie Smith stories I had grown up on. Still have my Ryne Sandberg Chiefs “Manager” card. Absolute legend.
I live in AZ but my second team is still the Cubs. I even worked for the D-backs and was there for all 4 WS games in 01. But that time with my grandfather and the Cubs cemented them as my number two. I cried more in 2016 than I did for any of ours. And I’ll never cry that hard for ours ever. It was for him.
