I got to meet him at his house once when I was a kid. My step uncle coached his kid in little league. Signed a ball for each of us. Talked with my dad for a good 20 mins while the ladies toured his home. Very nice guy. He seemed very humble.
As a Reds fan, Rose was a lousy human being and Sandberg was the type of ballpayer and person that everyone would want to root for. It's a sad day for baseball.
That's because if anyone has any baggage whatsoever, it's reddit policy to shit on that person relentlessly when they die.
Luckily Ryne is one of the few people out there without baggage.
Edit: I apologize. It's not reddit policy. It's just kids. Back in the day the phrase "don't speak ill of the dead" was a thing. When someone died you looked at the good they did in their life, not all their warts.
Kids don't give a shit if someone did 5,000 good deeds. If they did one shitty thing, that's the only thing they think should be talked about and it should be the person's defining trait upon death.

I came here to say this, briefly met him and his wife a little over a decade at a steakhouse in Philadelphia.
This entire thread is remarkably different from the Pete Rose thread. Ryno was truly a class act.
