Bob Uecker was one of those rare transcendent baseball people that no matter who your team was, you at the least appreciated and respected, but more likely loved.

RIP to Mr. Baseball.

I never really heard his calls since I was nowhere near Milwaukee, but his baseball stories were hilarious. His Hall of Fame speech is fantastic. He is missed for sure. Nice tribute by the Brewers.

The best games to listen to Ueck were ones that were out of hand. If the Brewers were up/down a bunch, he'd go into story mode for innings at a time. It was always a treat.

The games were never out of hand, just a couple grand slams and we’d be back in it!

I actually wonder if someone has cataloged and uploaded his stories somewhere

Much love to you my friend. I grew up listening to Uecker and Hughes call games for the Brewers in the 80s. I was legit happy Pat got to call a World Series winning game in 2016.

I'm an older Cubs fan who has very little animosity towards the Brewers. My family used to volunteer at a summer camp in East Troy, WI every summer and we'd go to a Brewers game at Milwaukee County Stadium if they were at home that week. I still wish you all were in the AL so I could appreciate your successes without it being at the Cubs' expense.

If you're ever around East Troy, go to Lauber's Ice Cream Parlor and get yourself a Green River float. Or, if you're feeling saucy, get a tortoise, which is a gallon barrel turtle sundae.

Laubers is unfortunately closed. Great tribute to Ueck

Aww, that's a bummer! I looked it up on Google before commenting and it said closed for the season, but now that I think about it, late-August is definitely too early for that.

I think we all wish they were still in the AL for one reason or another lol

Was it on Army Lake?

If you're ever around East Troy, go to Lauber's Ice Cream Parlor and get yourself a Green River float.

Also, East Troy has an old section of electric passenger train that runs from East Troy to The Elegant Farmer, up in Mukwonago on most weekends. The trains are all from the 40s & 50s. It's a fun little ride and worth the ticket price/time.

Was it on Army Lake?

Nope, Peters Lake. Camp Timber-Lee, about 8 miles west of East Troy.

I think I remember the trains, but the ice cream parlor was definitely the most memorable thing for pre-teen me, lol.

Its been a conflict for me on the Cubs. I grew up being able to see them on WGN with Carey/Stone so of course naturally liked them.

Brewers were not on nearly as much.

Then the switch to the NL…

I worked as an undergrad in a lab with a die hard Wisconsin fan grad student. He would play every game with the speakers maxed so he could hear what was happening. Uek was a great one, and the tail end of a dying breed. I sent my condolences to my old coworker when I heard he passed. It was like losing a grandparent for him

This celebration is one of the most beautiful things I’ve had the joy to watch. Truly blessed to have him be a part of our lives.

Is crying in baseball allowed if the game hasn't started yet? Asking for a friend

u/mitrie Houston Astros 18h ago

There's no crying in baseball! (but don't worry, nobody's listening anyway)

It really shows how much sports are a part of our lives, when just seeing this makes me emotional. I was lucky enough to work for the Brewers in college and met Bob on a handful of occasions. This genuinely feels like losing a family member. I know tons of people who never met him feel the same way.

I absolutely love this and love that they had the roof open for this today.

A perfect celebration for Mr Baseball.

I remember my dad always laughing at his tonight show reruns, then Mr Belvedere (yep, I remember that show). Then learning his knowledge and humor applied to baseball, including the amazing role in Major League.

The man was a legend!

Just because it hasn't been said yet, Bob Costas was the MC and the first pitch was Bob Uecker Jr to Robin Yount.

My first exposure to Uecker was Mr. Belvedere and a commercial where he arrived to a game, and his seats were in the last, back row and he says, "if this place were turned around, I'd be in the front row!" Me and my brother still make that joke anytime we are at a sporting event. Had no idea he played and was the voice of the Brewers till much later in life.

RIP George Owens

God Damnit All To HELL if the Brewers don't take the World Series this year. Do it for Ueck.

Just the best. I hope it becomes a feature… Ueck Night, front row seats at bargain prices.

Wow this man was beloved!

He was the clearest representative of our city for the past who knows how many years, since before I was born. He was the best.

Bob Uecker made me a baseball fan! He had the greatest stories!

5

u/Drummallumin New York Mets 17h ago

I’m ootl what’s the significance of doing this today? Or did they just pick a random Sunday back when he died?

7

u/Crabpeople-99 Milwaukee Brewers 16h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if this being Willy Adames's first series back in Milwaukee since he left for SF played a role in the decision. As is the case with most Brewers main stays over the years, the two were quite close.

Good call

I miss that man.

I love this. What a tribute. Better than a patch or an arm band IMO.

4

u/_BooksandCoffee Milwaukee Brewers 10h ago

They’ve had a patch all season, too, but this was special for this game that served as the public memorial for his life.

u/FeloniousDrunk101 New York Yankees 10h ago

Big fan of it. The man deserved it!

Why is it Ueck and not Uecker?

Nickname that the players and fans had for him

I'm sure most everyone in Wisconsin can relate, especially for those of us who grew up in the 80s and 90s, but Ueck was a part of so many memories. I remember listening to games on warm summer nights in the late 80s and as background "music" for summer cookouts and other gatherings basically my entire life. His calls of the most significant moments in team history will be immortalized forever. I vividly remember listening to him call Rob Deer's Easter Sunday Walkoff in 1987, Robin Yount's 3000th hit, CC Sabathia's near no-hitter in 2008, Nyjer Morgan's walk off in the 2011 NLDS, and unfortunately his final sign off after they lost to the Mets last year. Uecker was a true legend in the booth, but more than that, universally lauded as a great person. A fitting tribute to a life most people could only dream of.

It would be cool if his jersey said UECK on the back too
