There's a lot of lows, being a Mariners fan.

But the highs, man...

That's my MVP

MVP MVP MVP

u/NevermoreSEA Seattle Mariners 16h ago

It's honestly hard to fathom how crazy of a season he's having as a Catcher. It's just incredibly special stuff.

40

u/4r4r4real 16h ago

Some would say, in terms of number of home runs hit, the most crazy/special ever

11

u/Razzorsharp Montreal Expos 12h ago

Wouldn't have it any other for the protagonists of baseball

78

u/BrandoC95 Seattle Mariners 16h ago edited 16h ago

He set the single-season record for HRs for the most important defensive position -- in a league thats history spans ~150 years -- and there's still a week left in August. Our lack of team success is at least made up for with larger-than-life baseball personalities like The Kid, Ichiro and now Dumper.

45

u/OldDekeSport Seattle Mariners 15h ago

Didn't even mention Edgar, King Felix, or Julio!

We may not have team success, but we've been blessed to watch absolutely great players on the field

26

u/nypr13 Chicago Cubs 13h ago

And you guys havent even mentioned Randy Johnson or early ARod. I mean, you guys have had a lot

12

u/OldDekeSport Seattle Mariners 12h ago

Just dont look before Griffey, just a black hole of absolute nothingness lol

8

u/nypr13 Chicago Cubs 12h ago

I remember watching TWIB and I am fairly certain they never finished 500 or better until Griffey got there and it was like season 2 or 3. As a Bucs fan in Tampa back then, I understood

2

u/LandLockedSailor Seattle Mariners 8h ago

The absolute disrespect to Mr. Mariner

2

u/oneeighthirish Paper Bag • Chicago White Sox 10h ago

Haven't even mentioned my career mode guy who hit .400 with 86 home runs for the Mariners back in 2012.

14

u/scottydg San Francisco Giants • Seattle Mariners 15h ago

And playing Platinum glove-level defense while doing it.

10

u/ThisWebsiteIsNeat Philadelphia Phillies 15h ago

He’s not though. He has in past years, but not this year

9

u/Master-Cycle1871 Seattle Mariners 12h ago

he’s actually kind of back on track. Second best defensive catcher in the AL according to fangraphs. Maybe not quite to the level of last season, but still one of the best in the league.

20

u/Sonlin Seattle Mariners 16h ago

Every game we lost that he hit a homerun in still felt like a half win.

So excited to see how far he goes.

Raleigh's pace compared to 60-HR club through 131 games

Year/Player YTD HR Pace1 Year-End Total
2001 Barry Bonds 56 69.3 73
1999 Sammy Sosa 55 68 63
1998 Mark McGwire 53 65.9 70
2001 Sammy Sosa 52 64.3 64
1961 Roger Maris 51 63.5 61
1998 Sammy Sosa 51 63.5 66
1999 Mark McGwire 51 63.1 65
2022 Aaron Judge 51 63.1 62
2025 Cal Raleigh 49 60.6 ??
1927 Babe Ruth 44 52.1 60

1 Pace is calculated through total possible games for a player that season...in some cases this is 155/163 because players' stats counted in rained-out games

157

u/nsgomez Seattle Mariners • New York Mets 16h ago

I just wanna say thanks for always being here to give us Pace Chat

73

u/eugoogilizer Oakland Athletics 16h ago

If I’m reading this correct, Babe Ruth had 44 hrs in his first 131 games played, then hit 16 hrs in his last 20 games (he only played in 151 games that year). That’s quite a tear

50

u/Antithesys Minnesota Twins • MVPoster 16h ago

It's not his first 131 games, it's the team's. The number of games the player appears in is not directly relevant to this calculation. He hit 16 in the final 24 games of the season, regardless of whether he appeared in them (there were 155 team games that year as far as the players' stats were concerned, due to a suspended tie).

9

u/n8_n_ Seattle Mariners • Chicago Cubs 16h ago

it's through 131 team games played

1

u/MrBoomf Tampa Bay Rays 4h ago

76

u/eugoogilizer Oakland Athletics 16h ago

I’m calling it. 25 dumps in his last 31 games to finish with 74, breaking Bonds’ record 🤣

From your lips to Gods ears

11

u/Kaldricus Seattle Mariners 13h ago

I feel like these days if he even gets close to that point, no one is pitching to him.

3

u/AlpineAvalanche Seattle Mariners 7h ago

He does still have 3 games against the Rockies

There have been times this season where I feel like Goldy has been conserving some of his energy.

Guess I know why. He knew these moments were coming lol.

Who has seen the like of Cal Raleigh? Or seen the living semblance of him standing in the world? Caleb, that could best God at ball-throw or wrestling or pig-trailing or at the honeyed discourse of sweet Carolinan with jewels and gold for bards, or at the listening of distant harpers in a black hole at evening.

Oh where is the living human man who could beat Cal at the making of generous cheese? At the spearing of ganders? At the magic of thumb-suck? At the shaving of hog-hair? Or at the unleashing of long hounds from a golden thong in the full chase, sweet-fingered corn-yellow Cal, Cal that could carry an armed host from Almha to Slieve Luachra in the craw of his gut-hung knickers.
