Players Only [Highlight] Cal Raleigh hits his 49th HR of the season, setting a new single-season record for a primary catcher

He reminds of Nelson Cruz where he just demolishes the ball so hard it goes out in any ballpark.

I wonder how many he’d have in Yankee. The numbers would be ridiculous

u/lutefiskeater Seattle Mariners • Arizona Diamondbacks 14h ago
Somebody ran the numbers on that back when cal had just over 30 & it was less than one may think. He only netted like 2 or 3 more
16
u/tlsrandy Seattle Mariners 13h ago
He’s getting to the point where 4-6 extras home runs could be the difference between breaking meaningful records though
I think it’s still an interesting thought experiment. Just within reasonable bounds.
→ More replies (1)3
u/kotalov16 Seattle Mariners • Arizona Diamondbacks 11h ago
The thing with Cal is that he has very few wallscraper homers, so putting him in a better homer park is just inherently only going to give him a few more. But I am very much getting my hopes up that he can manage to get to 63, so the more the merrier

Also very possibly the first to ever hit 20 HR from each side in a season if he can get 1 more from the right.

If he hits 55, that's more than Mantle's 1961 season, which I believe is the most for a switch hitter.

Its 2018. And On a mild Sinaloa november evening in mexico, theres a springy, muscle bound white kid lining up on the infield for the Tomateros de Culiacan. No ones quite sure what hes doing; the coaching staff didnt have many details on a surfer kid from Placienta California. and he didnt offer up many either because, despite speaking excellent spanish, it was easier for him to pretend not to understand so he could avoid questions about the latina baddie in the stands who watched his every move.
All they knew was that he had been flirting with some teams in the majors up in the US, and that he hit pull side bombs for fun.
His name, is Dylan Moore. And with him, these Mariners, are about to sail, finally, into the 21st Century.
cue the elevator music

you have to change the split to "Live Stats - Full Season" to see changes as the games are happening
edit: just realized you can't see splits on the fwar leader board fresh off google. If you're on that page just click on "Major League Leaders", and then you can filter a bunch of stuff including splits

I love Cal Raleigh. I love his name, I love the shape of his body, I love the way he plays. I eat a lot of boiled eggs and lift weights to try and be like this guy but I can't. There are 6 grams of protein in an egg but I can't eat enough to get big like him. Nice round muscles. They're smooth too, like the waves of the Strait of Juan de Fuca on a calm day. When I was a kid I ate big eggs to be hot like Junior, and I got some great results, some of the roundest muscles in my class, but these days I'm looking at 6 eggs a day and it's not good enough to pop Dumper style muscles out my scrawny arms ever since dad left.

Most HR ever by a Mariner in a season. Soon.
7
u/darwinpolice Seattle Mariners 11h ago
I genuinely never thought we'd see a Mariner pass Griffey in single-season homers, but he needs what, eight more to get there? With 31 games left, it's doable.
15
u/vylain_antagonist Seattle Mariners 16h ago
Who has seen the like of Cal Raleigh? Or seen the living semblance of him standing in the world? Caleb, that could best God at ball-throw or wrestling or pig-trailing or at the honeyed discourse of sweet Carolinan with jewels and gold for bards, or at the listening of distant harpers in a black hole at evening.
Oh where is the living human man who could beat Cal at the making of generous cheese? At the spearing of ganders? At the magic of thumb-suck? At the shaving of hog-hair? Or at the unleashing of long hounds from a golden thong in the full chase, sweet-fingered corn-yellow Cal, Cal that could carry an armed host from Almha to Slieve Luachra in the craw of his gut-hung knickers.

This shouldn't be possible. Catcher is a position that is notoriously hard on the body. He struggled a bit over the last few weeks, but he's still crushing homers in a ballpark that significantly suppresses offense. I think at this point he's passed Judge in the MVP race, and Judge is only barely worse than his last two MVP seasons.

u/kamarian91 16h ago
I mean the closest thing out of those 3 is Ichiro's 254th hit, all time MLB records in primary categories is pretty special, and depending on how many Cal ends up with he could cement the record for a long long time

Its worth noting a lot of those were a long time ago.
Cals walkoff to send us to the playoffs is my best moment in mariners history. The historical tension of following this team for the past decades just makes it stand out more than anything else. I don't fault anyone for choosing this now too, because we are seeing history made after so much misery.
as i wrote this comment i forgot how truly impactful the double was. Blame my age, i was a tad too young to get it in the moment back then.
17
u/OldDekeSport Seattle Mariners 15h ago
Ill always go with The Double, but this is my favorite individual player moments for a Mariner. Ichiro setting hits record and Cal getting catcher HR record are far and away the top 2. If Cal catches Griffey at 56 and wins MVP that would cement this.
Cal also gets a boost because of the walkoff to end the drought and calling out our FO to go all in. He signed an extension and THEN does this. Man loves Seattle and we love him!
6
u/OccasionalGoodTakes Seattle Mariners 15h ago
Man, that second part really gets to the heart of this season being special. Cal is just that guy.

Yeah, its hard to not go with The Double as a canonical "best moment." I don't believe we would have a Mariners with a Big Dumper to admire without that moment.
You're on point with the individual player moment qualification.

u/clutchheimer Seattle Mariners 12h ago

Also, CATCHERS DON'T DO THIS. They rarely stay healthy enough, play enough games, or innately have this level of power.

Yeah and while his defensive stats are a bit down this year, this is still the same guy who won the Platinum Glove last year. Having a guy like that suddenly find the ability to hit 50+ bombs... holy shit.
13
u/JayBuhnersBarber Seattle Mariners 16h ago
Yep. I watched them all happen. They were all great.
What Cal is doing supersedes the physical ability and stamina of most players. You can tell by how often catchers don't do this.

Judge leads Raleigh in a lot more stats BUT Raleigh is a catcher so you could make a strong case that Raleigh deserves it just as much since catchers NEVER do this. Raleigh is playing great defense while simultaneously having one of the greatest seasons by a catcher ever. I REALLY hope Cal gets it but Judge will probably get it for his on the surface stats.

idk why people bring this up. Who the hell cares if he's a switch hitter LOL You don't get extra points for being a switch hitter. It doesn't mean anything. The only viable argument should be about whether the defensive gap between Cal and Judge is enough to offset the offensive gap between them, which is a very real argument and is probably basically a tossup right now.

9
u/hickopotamus Seattle Mariners 14h ago
Honestly he's not very tough to pitch to when you execute your pitches. He’s hitting .200. I know he’s done damage against teams and I think if you execute, he’s obviously got big damage potential and he’s got a lot of strikeout potential, too, and when you execute your pitches, you usually get the job done.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Howboutit85 Seattle Mariners 13h ago
.200 is very different than .240-.250… especially in today’s game. Hitting .300 is almost a novelty now, and really really good hitters are in the .260-.270 range. We may even finish the season with only 4-5 guys hitting over 300. That’s how dominant pitching is now, and how little batters hit for contact vs hit for dingers. It’s just the way things are currently.
