Camp trip to Lake Vesuvius in Ohio

Only saw two hikers for the whole trip. Wasn't easy getting my wagon of stuff over all the roots and rocks to get to the spot, but it was worth it. They even have the lake drained by 4 feet right now for maintenance on the dam, so I was able to gather a bunch of driftwood and have a bonfire on the pseudo-beach. It was an amazing trip.

Trip Advice What Would You Do?

I was having terrible problems with men walking the my campsite so I decided to go to a more remote and primitive location hoping it would be different.

First day there and a guy with three buddies showed up and while they were on what I would consider the edge of my dispersed campsite they definitely didn’t belong. They went into what was posted as a restricted area behind my site.

The next day another dude showed up and he did similar things; staring at the ground, turning rocks and things over and generally acting very suspiciously.

The next day a ranger came by and noticed my barrier (I dragged and carried as many downed trees, logs and large branches across the entry to the site to discourage encroachment) and in talking with the ranger it turns out these guys were poaching.

There are several endangered and protected species on that mountain and these guys had zero issues intimidating me to do their thing.

The ranger asked me to gather plate numbers so he could track them down and have a conversation with them (Rangers words).

Another group of these slimy (they all looked like back woods hillbillies with no personal hygiene) came through and I was fed up.

The ranger told me the upcoming weekend the area would be crawling with poachers and he wanted me to stay and help him with the plate numbers.

I decided I didn’t need to be yet another ‘missing camper’ poster so we left.

What would you do?

Trip Pictures A Touch of Fog at the Central Coast of California

Took my kids for their first camping trip, at California's Cero Alto Campground. In the morning we had a touch of fog try to roll in, but it broke apart from the sun just as it tried to grow near our campsite. We weren't prepared for how exposed we were in the mid-day sun, and had to take refuge under the trees on the left. I cooked the tri tip in my sous vide for 16 hours, then I froze it solid for the cooler. While at camp, I reverse-seared it over our wood fire, and it came out amazing. Highly recommend, as it was nice not having to deal with raw meat while at camp.

Gear Question Is a self inflating sleeping pad better than an air mattress?

Upvotes

I've owned a few air mattresses that have all invariably failed after a couple of uses. It is, however, very comfortable when it works, so I'm thinking of alternatives. Would a self inflating sleeping pad fair better? I currently use a cot + manually inflating sleeping pad, but I'm a restless sleeper and it slips around.

I initially set up in one of the 5 spots at Swain’s lock along the Potomac (pics 2&3), but right at sunset, 3 bros roll in, gear in tow. They had good taste in music, but that wasn’t the vibe I was going for.

They made it easy for me to decide to move to a location more suited to the hammock stand I was trying out for the first time.

Best decision! I could still hear them around 1, but the frogs and crickets and last few summer locusts mostly drown them out. And the view was to die for!

This part of the Potomac isn’t tidal, and there was no rain in the forecast here or upstream last night, so I wasn’t worried about rising water levels while I slept.

There was a little dew on the outside this morning, but it was really nice sleeping without the fly and seeing the stars and the moon and the beautiful scenery, zipped in away from the bugs.

Trip Pictures Maine Sunrise

Upvotes

This is the reason to wake up at dawn in Maine. Sunrise over Casco Bay on September 2. Spectacular. Car camped at Winslow Bay Memorial Park. Was lucky to get a waterfront spot. The weather was phenomenal. Dry, temperate and gorgeous. Lot's of trail hiking with my dog Isaac. This was his first time camping. He loves the hammock.

Stopped in Burr Oak State Park, and Greenridge State Forest on a roadtrip back to the east coast this past week. Breaking in a new to us Tacoma, and a truck camping setup (had previously built gear towards bike packing).

Took advantage of REIs labor day sale and got the Kelty lowdown couch, and galley deluxe bag. Highly recommend both!

Friendly reminder to get out there! Can't wait for the next trip.

Had a wonderful time. Great setup right on the Tennessee River. High of 80, lows in the high 50’s. It was perfect. Didn’t even put the rain fly on the tent, and woke up to a gorgeous view. Cooked a lot, drank a lot of coffee, and even watched some college football 😂

Excited to get out a few more times this fall!

Backyard camping

Post image

I highly recommend a trial run in the backyard especially if you have kids. We felt really prepared for going out a bit further from civilization. The closest gas station was 30 minutes away from our first tent camping spot as a family. In our backyard, we kept track of everything that we had to go back in the house for and based our camping list off of that. Plus, lying down in the tent, all we could see was the treetops. It almost felt like real camping. At night, we listened to our cicadas and frogs sing. This weekend, we might pitch the tent again since we probably won’t be able to get away for real camping.

What knife you are using?

I'm actually looking for a good knife for everything, like camping, cutting small woods to create fire with and without ferro rod and also for daily usage. Recommend me a knife low in budget and high in performance. Although I've seen some of the survival knives on internet but they are pretty expensive.

Trip Report Small holes in tent after trip

Hi everyone. I just took my brand new Coleman 3P Sundome camping this weekend and when I got back I noticed three little holes on the bottom corner of my tent. I was quite careful and also had a footprint setup, so I’m unsure where these little holes came from.

Perhaps a mouse? I can confirm the only “food” I had in my tent was water with lemon flavored electrolytes. Anyway, easy fix, but just want to be sure I’m taking the proper precautions next time.

Tarp waterproofing

I’ve got an aqua quest guide tarp that’s been awesome. It’s 3 years old now and I haven’t had any issues so far. As far as I can tell their website has no information regarding care/upkeep. Is there any maintenance involved in prolonging a nylon tarp’s water resistance and longevity? All I do is fold it in half longways and hang it on the garage wall when I’m not using it.

Car Camping Looking for suggestions...quiet, secluded(?) car camping spot in WV

My son and I will be doing a roadtrip in a few weeks. No real itinerary, just relaxing and recharging. Preference toward "State Park" type setting...wooded sites with some privacy, no hookups needed. Some water (lake/stream) would be nice, but not mandatory.

We are likely to settle in NE area the first night. May stay for 3 or 4 nights if the vibe is right OR bump across state another 100 miles or so for a few nights if you recommend that "can't miss" spot.

Thank you in advance.

Best ocean camping northeast US?

I’m from PA and looking to do an October camping to see the autumn leaves. The plan is to go somewhere in upstate NY such as Lake Placid for example, but I’ve been there before.

Just did some awesome camping in Put in Bay and I want another waterfront campsite, but this time I want ocean.

I figured I would ask here before I do any research, but is there any good camping in New Hampshire or anywhere in that area? I’d really like to be walking distance of the ocean.

This is tent camping btw.

EZ UP Camping Cube

Me and my man just camped for 6 days in our new tent. I kept seeing ads for another brand, and fell in love with the idea of such an easy set up (we use our Quest canopy over the old tent anyways) with no poles and oodles of room (10’x10’).

The other brand was more expensive and took longer to ship, so I found this on Amazon. After checking the reviews, I was sold. The two main complaints were no issue for us.

  1. The zipper on the door gets stuck. Yes, it does if you aren’t paying attention to where the flap over the zipper is. Use your fingers to move the flap out of the way and you’re fine.

  2. The plastic hooks are cheap and break if you breathe on them. I don’t know what people were doing to them, but they hook on the canopy easy peasy, and I even stepped on one and it didn’t break.

It has a doggy door, 4 pockets for stuff, plenty of places to hook lights, and the ability for lots of ventilation and views. Another plus is the tent floor being made out of tarp material. We were worried about how it might do in wind or storms, but we didn’t experience that over our trip. We did water proof it, and the way the tent gets secured leads us to believe it would be fine in the wind. Each corner hooks to where the canopy gets staked down, and each side gets staked down on its own.

So, for anyone that may have been curious about it, it’s a great tent for camping where you don’t have to walk far, and we love it!

A question of etiquette

We are boating in a 5.1m down the Glenelg river in Victoria this weekend and plan on stopping along the way to camp overnight at a canoe camp. My question is the etiquette of tying up on the little pier with the boat. Typically canoes and kayaks will pull them up onto the beach or grass but obviously can’t do this with a boat. Would tying the boat up be frowned upon if there are kayakers also looking to use the same camp.

Spent a few days over labor day weekend up on top of the lake plateau in the Beartooths. About a 10 mile hike into the rainbow lakes. Incredible camping up at 9,500 on tundra. Lots of cutthroats in the many rainbow lakes, pretty much were taking any fly we threw at them. No bears seen although we heard from others there was a sow and two cubs roaming around owl lake.

Backpacking bag

Looking for affordable options/ brands to look into. Needing to get a solid bag without throwing my whole check at one. Doesn't need to be super fancy, just need one for now that wont go to shit on me in less than a week. Taking a trip in a few weeks and dont have the funds to dive all in yet. Then I can slowly invest in the good stuff through the comming years. Any tips are appreciated!

Edit: if have tent advice also id really appreciate it! From what I've seen light is important, like 5ish pounds?

All I've known mostly is normal old campsite camping here in iowa, so there was never need for "good" stuff the cheapest last you years here if you take care of it. But i doubt the same applies when hiking covering more serious terrains.. taking 8ish days to go to different places in the corners, starting in new mexico and ending in colorado if that helps

Trip Pictures Camping on the North Yorkshire moors

Went away with my friend and her dog, we stayed near Austwick on the Yorkshire moors.

Camped on a campsite in an open field with a really old house attached which was the camp shop/office. We just had a basic (cheap) 4 man tent which was small for just the three of us!

We were close to a nature trail which had waterfalls and a cave nearby, and little villages with old country pubs.

How to build your own rockpot

This ad is coming up on my social media feeds. Basically, it’s a double boiler inside of an insulated thermos with a heated stone ring in it and it functions like a slow cooker. Great idea, but it’s not a $250 great idea.

I feel like this is something you ought to be able to build
